I feel like the mc140 was a personification of new rebel/new republic doctrine of fast mobile ships that could get in, overwhelm the enemy shields and destroy them in a single fast pass rather than slugging it out in a battle line. It's a useful strategy if you have a lot of territory to cover and only so many ships

I like how the Alliance/New Republic ships are often designed as an answer to Imperial designs. Things like the Starhawk or the MC30 and how they're optimized to specifically go against Star Destroyers. It's like rock paper scissors where the Star Destroyer is a great design for most purposes, but is weak to ships designed to go against it.

Not the biggest fan of the MC140, but the ability to get in and dump so much firepower on a single target before rocketing away is really cool. Silly in design, amazing in practice.

I think the big blade was someone's idea to harken back to all the hammerhead designs of the Old Republic. The strengths are also its weakness. It has lots of weapons forward at the cost of little surface area it has to defend. Once however they aren't in a head on battle or even retreating, or heaven for if have an opponent above or below them, the ship would be in serious trouble. An Ardent or Pelleon only has to roll to bring its major batteries to bear against an opponent except for behind it, the MC140 though has to turn in a completely new direction.

Only reason I can find as excuse are 1. The weaponry is longer in length or needs to be separated from the ship due to radiation or etc , as it is very advanced and maybe longer range 2.Treaty ship ? Maybe it had limitations to face like Lenght and width limitations and a fin like structure was excused as Mon cala styling design element ? Or the fin also doubles as a massive shield generator shaped like a axe or blade , which is more concentrated at a needed point and less area etc also maybe useful for ramming g other ships😂🎉

@sumukhvmrsat6347 #2 maybe, but doubtful as the Pelleon's were longer and had more mass (tonnage) (more powerful internals, weapons, power banks etc etc). Cooling maybe, but doubtful. Shielding the blade is just adding more surface area compared to what would already be on the hull and the weapons could be mounted in a brim trench style and have all forward with better side arcs. Long range turbos would have been standard at this time and no radiation has ever been expressed as a concern that hasn't been overcome, even on weapons far larger. Not bad thoughts, but I think it just boils down to someone thinking that the blades look "cool" without thinking about a ship might function in combat, or being to linear thinking and only picturing it being used in a singular way. Singular purpose thinking then gets taken apart by the community in general who constantly think of ways to break artists or authors toys, or how to use them in a different way.

Hmm... maybe the secret rule of power scaling in Star Wars is that if it looks it could try spinning that's a good trick, it gets a huge power boost. The Falcon, the X-Wing, the Naboo Fighter of course, they're pretty strong. Most ships can't pull it off, they look too weird trying to spin fast: TIE's, Star Destroyers, Lucrehulks. Death Stars get dunked on they can't spin if their life depended on it. Most blimps can do a defensive spin though, while the MC140 looks like a pro at spinning.

3:04 That's interesting and a design error on the Pellaeon in that panel. It doesnt have a bulge where its reactor would jut out. As for the scythe as I suggested to Eck all those years ago, flip the blade horizontally and move the hangars to the ventral part of the ship. Get rid of the firing turbolaser battery row grooves and stud the damn thing with 360⁰ turrets.

This is actually peak design as far as star wars goes, and no concentrating all of the fire power in the front shouldn't be a problem with how big in ships numbers battles should be in star wars. When you have thousands of ships under your command even individual ships don't matter, if the enemy detached force is trying to flank you then you send out your detached force to face them frontally, negating any weakness that comes from singular ship design.

What if the MC140 Scythe's front "bladed" part was a massive Vibroblade? Like stick a vibroblade generator, sharpen it and reinforce it, and you have a powerful ramship. Get the weapon systems all around the ship like most warships, and you have a horrifying ship capable of "beheading" enemy capital ships. I can see many mercenaries remaking this thing and using it to conduct pirate raids on New Republic and Imperial Remnant ships.

Yeah but the long fin wasn't necessary , i thought that too separated lenghty barrel structures , but they can be mounted around the ship not like a fin

@@sumukhvmrsat6347 That still requires a bigger hull if it were a conventional ship design. This puts as much/many guns as possible on as small/cheap a ship as possible. You could argue the doctrine of this over fewer higher powered guns though, but if torpedoes are a major part than you want as many to fire at once.

@@lokix920strike nope , all the original guns turrets will be replaced with the fixed larger guns , and if needed only a small amount of width on the sides will be increased and they will be focused tp the front , the guns were placed on the spine , so the width of the guns cant be more than the spine , same with the torpedoes , only a fraction of armor and shielding needed for an extra spine is needed for the gaps between the existing armor due to increased weaponry size inside the hull ,

I think something that new Star Wars Fans or People that only watch Star Wars. Don't see as how the rebellion actually was. The rebellion was this large ass organization, they needed specialized ships for specific purposes and their doctrine. It's not no little resistance Like Harry Potters, you're talking about billions if not trillions of people who are supporting the rebellion's cause. They had entire factories in corporations that supported them. It seems Mon cala ships BROADSIDE with enemy ships most of time Things MC140 FAILS at 0. The spine thing needs extra armor and shields along with the shield and armor needed for the bulbous hull , basically doubling or tripling 1.Traditional Mon Calamari Aquatic streamlined Bulbous design with balanced weapons placement 2. Giving proper reason to deviation (changing) from traditional mon cala design 2.1 Cross of fire ? Turrets can do that on blisters 2.2 Hammerhead ? The Main hull is still exposed 2.3 Long ranger or Blade shield technology ? Not mentioned anywhere 2.4 something new and refreshing ? It definely costed lots of money and tine and new infrastructure and design reaserching for that long asse spine for no single thing that a traditional mon cala design cant do 3. COOLNESS factor (cool looking design ) fails 4.traditional Strong shields and hull capable of taking punishment is now forward focused on a fucking spine or double on whole ship 5. Cant shoot anywhere other than front on straight line , Thrawn can use old victory class star destroyers with a interdictor and tactical jump to the sides or above and below of a mc140 or a fleet of mc140s and by constantly moving to stick to thier side can kill them easily like he did in legends Last Command book Battle of coruscant with the Golan platforms

Personally, I like this cruiser and the Pellaeon class star destroyer, but the legacy era starfighters look terrible! The CF9 Crossfire, X-83 TwinTail and Predator-class fighters are all downgrades in their respective fighter lineages in my book

The weapons on the blade can only fire forward, right? At least there isn't an instance of them firing in other directions. Rubbing salt on the wound here but it really doesn't make sense. Against a big target the maneuverability is useless, and it has about 1/27 the volume of the Palleon, I seriously doubt taking them head on is an effective strategy. Against smaller and equally agile targets it is at a disadvantage because most guns are fixed. While half of the enemy's guns can fire, only 20% of theirs can. The same can be said about fighter defense, it evidently doesn't have enough. It takes all the problems of the ISD, makes them worse and removes the durability.
