Henry, I think you should have noted that when you're using Lockdown Mode, if someone you haven't previously called with Facetime calls you, although their call will be blocked, you'll receive a notification of the attempted call, so you can call back. 🙂

7:30 it actually makes a lot of sense, malicious peripherals are a huge vulnerability when they act as "user" inputs

7:38 I actually prefer that my devices ask before allowing an accessory to connect. I heard once a while ago about someone could hypothetically connect something to one of my devices and install some malware, so since then I have an option set on my iPhone and Macbook to ask for permission every time an accessory connects Macbook setting is found in Privacy & Security, "Allow accessories to connect" iPhone setting is found in Face ID & Passcode, "Allow access when locked" / "Accessories"

I am using it since day one without any problems. Sometimes a call was blocked and reported.

Thanks for this thorough breakdown, Henry. I was looking for a simple explainer about this to share with people in my life who are less privacy obsessed.

Just look it up and compare the features yourself. Email is a terrible protocol for privacy anyway compared to messaging services like Signal. Proton already gave emails of protestors to German authorities

my guess for why you can't search for messages is that imessage doesn't do the normal parsing it would do with the message due to the history of imessage exploits

Huh, I didn't know lockdown was even a thing and literally none of the negatives you have listed are a concern for me... Actually several of them I see as positives. Turned it on and I will see how well it works.

@@techlore Thanks! That is awesome that you are watching comments even on videos this far back! So far so good, I also tossed onto my phone newdns and my vpn... My approach for mobile security/privacy so far has been to use RDP to connect to my computer and use my much more advanced setup through that, it is rather tedious to do so this gives me a medium level of that. Doesn't help so much with anonymity but that is usually the hard one anyways.

When should I turn off lockdown mode if I don’t know when to or if I’m safe to do it

Lockdown Mode has some drawbacks for me. I can't mute or accept calls with my Apple Watch, which leads to awkward situations during calls. I prefer to manage calls discreetly without having to grab my phone. Additionally, iCloud tools on the web are restricted, preventing me from accessing Apple Mail and Calendar, which I rely on since I don’t use a Mac. The privacy benefits come at the cost of convenience, making me reconsider using Lockdown Mode.

Lockdown mode is not for you since you enjoy the convenience of many vulnerable systems

@@ProBallerJake7 that sadly is a true statement while i like the idea of lockdown mode, the convenience is something hard to let go. As time goes by I might find myself a solution that does fulfill my needs, while taking a step into the direction of security ofc :)

On Lockdown mode my baterry last much much longer. And if i want safe battery even longer lockdown+location services+low battery mode makes my iphone last much much longer. Curret battery % on my is 88! (Iphone 8 plus (64))

A bandaid until one switches to a Linux PC accompanied by a de-Googled Android Phone, while being in Apple's ecosystem there's no making yourself secure against Apple themselves.

As long as you are connected to a network, your sense of security is a placebo.
@electricfishfan

Placebo is a tad harsh. Moderate privacy measures serve to highly discourage some sources of attacks which you choose to prioritize, but you can never be completely insulated until you disconnect, sure.

I don't think a de-Googled Android phone is secure either. Many of the threats are not from Google.

Google Pixel and Apple iPhone get security updates the instant Apple and Google release the them. Other phones get security updates when/if Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile decide to push the Over The Air (OTA) update AFTER they develop and integrate their own software stack into the OTA. This is assuming your phone is still new enough (less than 2-3 yrs old) that they don’t lose money wasting bandwidth on OTA updates for models they don’t sell anymore. Samsung is probably best cutting edge hardware but I will never buy one until they fix slow deployment and discretionary OTA updates
