The resonator has a slimmer tone. Not thinner, like a bridge pickup, but slimmer... which makes it great for layering. The parts are all in the same tonal range, but there's room for each one. You have excellent insight. Gave the guitar another chance and discovered something. Outstanding!

I bought a 1996 Dobro resonator from a guitar shop in Austin, Texas and brought it back home with me to England in the late 90s. Kept it for years but hardly played it even though it was a beautiful guitar to play and sounded fantastic. I ended up selling it and it helped pay for me to move house! 😁

Awesome Tyler. It's okay to take a break from a guitar or 2 as long as they get some affection to apologise afterwards. The piece of music you were inspired to mKe was brilliant, a proper vibe and the little bit of lead added with the Strat was the icing on that musical cake. 👏👏

Back in the day before amps were a thing, the guitar player had to compete against louder instruments, so the resonator is much like a speaker cone, picking up the vibrations from the strings and boosting them acoustically. There are even resonators that are all metal (most of those are square necks, so you can only play lap steel style with a slide.)

I remember this guitar from way back when I found your channel before it blew up. It was basically treated as the acoustic guitar in your arsenal because the only other guitars you had were the classic green PRS, your first strat, and the McCartney bass. I remember thinking a steel guitar was an interesting choice of an acoustic to have with how weird they sound, but soon enough some actual acoustic guitars started entering the collection, so it wasn’t much of a shock to me that this would end up becoming something if an afterthought. But it’s nice to see it come back.

Request for a video idea and might also be good extra $ in it but I know a lot of people who have purchased plugins but rely on the default presets for tone and are too intimidated by it all to find a good tone, including myself. A video covering different plugins and how you would tweak or create your own sounds would be great and even possibly selling preset packs. Really dug the song though. Inspiring.

Cracking tune there! I had a cheapish (metal bodied like the "Brothers in Arms" cover) resonator that I got for £50 because someone dropped it on it's head when it was a baby. I did an invisible Gibson stylee headstock repair and used it for several years. Someone took a real shine to it and I sold it and bought a Katana 100 mk2 and some reeeaaly nice walnut for a baritone. I must get another one sometime as they are great fun. I do still have a reso bass though and that does the "look" for me til then.

It's worth noting that this guitar is a spider bridge resonator guitar, just one type of resonator guitar. There are three main resonator designs: The tricone, with three metal cones, designed by the first National company. The single-cone "biscuit" design of other National instruments. The single inverted-cone design (also known as a spider bridge) of Dobro brand instruments and instruments that copy the Dobro design.

My G5120, wanted it, got it as a gift, played it a couple of times but the Bigsby and the bridge not being fixed to the body was too much of a shift from my Stratocaster. It has a few electronic bugs now that are putting me off using it. I really want that Resonator though, I saw one in a shop a few months back, but it was gone next time I went :(
