Yeah hi, African American person here, the master bedroom thing is a lie. That has never been a thing LOL. It's more like the master bedroom is for the master of the house...as in the main adults get that master bedroom/suite. As in the people who bought the house. No connotations to slavery

Yes I’ve never heard that negative connotation used with a “master bedroom” either. I’ve always heard it referred to as either the “master bedroom” or recently an “owners suite”. It’s always referred to the person who is the head of the household. But it’s only used if the bedroom has an en suite otherwise it’s referred to as the Main Bedroom.

About the 'Master Bedroom' ordeal. It comes from old english, used hundreds of years before the slave trade era. But the term 'Master Bedroom' was first used (that we officially know of) in a Sears 1926 Modern Homes Catalog. I've researched it and no where says that it is a bad term to use, the only connection is that those of slavery had to refer to their 'Owners' as Masters.

Yeah, and you can see that in how titles worked historically. Master would refer to an unmarried man and Mister would refer to a married man. Miss (once it got popular) would refer to an unmarried woman and Mistress would refer to a married woman. These titles were used in reference to the house owner(s) and was an important differentiation between the house owner(s) and their staff.

Exactly. We paid people to do our stuff way before slaves were introduced into earlier Europe. Also (I don't know about English) but at least in German master (Meister) doesn't necessarily mean that they were somewhat owners or way higher on the social ladder. It's a term you still find in craftman trades today. A Meisterbrief is the highest degree you can get and it means that you are allowed to take on trainees. So the meaning of the word in itself isn't a bad one, it never was. It's just that people stopped hearing it outside of history books. Edit: I think the best word for it may be "head" like in "head of the household". Edit 2: Just remembered that master is also a higher university degree so the term does still exist in English.
@Sentariana
@Sentariana 2 жыл бұрын
@@stopske9332 I'm bilingual in English and German and I wish to clarify that, whilst there is some crossover, Meister and Master work differently in modernday language. German still uses Meister to refer to having a high level of skill on a regular basis, when that has gone mostly out of fashion in English (although, it can mean that and you still may see it in high fantasy or historical fiction books). However, if you are talking historically, then, yes, you are 100% correct.

just because a term existed before history changed the connotations to it, doesn't free the term from that. it's also not up to white people to decide whether something is racist or not. if it hurts someone, which is 100% logical to me, and it's extremely easy to NOT hurt someone just by using a different term, people should change that. it's like saying something isn't racist just because you weren't aware of it previously and did that thing because your parents have always done it, too.... it's really irritating that people seem to make a huge deal out of it. just change your wording and that's it!

I'm studying the minimal home thing right now, specifically Modernism and Bauhaus and one of the criticisms is that it feels very factory-like or sterile to people, but when you look into the movement, you find that one of the key designers and founders of the Modernist movement had the vision of modernism being very much for people and communities. I like the work and idealism of Le Corbusier, who wanted to restructure Paris to create skyscraper buildings that were self-sustaining communities with lots of light and small gardens and outdoor areas and shops underneath so you had a space designed for sustainability and community. If you look at his home designs you'll find they don't look clinical, at least they don't to me. He designed a home for an exhibition called L'Espirit Nouveau House (The House of Modern Spirit) and there was a tree on the plot he was given to work with. Instead of cutting it down, he built around the tree so there was a circular hole on part of the lower roof so the tree could continue to grow with and around the house. I love that. Unfortunately a lot of designers who followed him didn't quite capture the beauty of his vision and they went for this clinical Kim K look, making bland glass boxes with no life in them. It's sad because to me, his vision was something to aspire to and I wish it had become popular but I think people missed the point.

In America we all call it a master bedroom. That is just what it is called, due to it being the biggest room. It usually has extra features like cable and phone hook ups and maybe a master bathroom. It has nothing to do with being a master or slavery or anything like that. This is completely ridiculous for you to have to not call a room by it's proper name just because some people don't know that is what it is called. My wife was always given the master bedroom in every house/apartment she lived in as a child. It is usually the parents that get the master bedroom, but obviously isn't always the case. Whom ever resides in the master bedroom is not the master of the house or anyone in the house, it is just the title of the room. It's like how boats just have certain names for certain areas of the boat. I genuinely don't understand why people are getting offended over a title of a room, it is just what it is called!

I think minimal in terms of decorating and minimalism are very different. I consider myself a minimalist as in little clutter, everything having a space, and being tidy and organized. As for my home though it is for my family. Everything is made to be accessible to my kids and kid friendly. We display their art throughout the house and have their rooms decorated the way they want. The only rule I really have is no clutter and everything has a space where it goes at the end of the day.

I grew up in an extremely cluttered house. I'm taking no space on any of the kitchen counters, eating on the sofa because the dining table was full of stuff, and basically not having any clean or empty spaces throughout the entire house. As a result, I find myself feeling incredible anxious in cluttered spaces and keep my own house extremely minimal and clean (which I know annoys my husband), much like the house built in this videos. I feel like a lot of the time people go the opposite to the conditions they grew up in, Kim K's kids may be more likely to enjoy cluttered spaces rather then minimal ones as they grow up.

As someone who was born in a very busy, full home but grew up to LOVE minimalism I wanted to comment on what you said here at 11:15 - For me personally, minimalism is nothing close to clinical and depressing. Especially coming home from school, it would've been SO nice knowing that things at home would be clean, straight and organized. Like I know a lot of people dislike it but I love the white/beige/blank canvas feeling that a minimalistic home offers. It's like I've been crowded my whole life full with stuff growing up and now I want to get rid of as much stuff as possible! The less stuff I have, the less I have to clean and the less I have to stress about things breaking or getting dirty. I feel more comfortable and feel as though I have so much more space to stretch, breath and relax. I also struggle with allergies so when stuff starts to pile on with dust it gets annoying having to go about through tons of things to clean and get rid of the dust that accumulates, especially in corners. Then when it comes to adding colors I find myself hyper fixated on what colors match, which don't match, what patterns to use, what patterns not to use- it's exhausting, even if the shades of things are just slightly off I get annoyed. Like in the office you did it's a green rug with the orange chair- that would throw me off the rails in real life lmao! And although I can admit it looks nice in the Sims, I would not be able to focus on what I'm doing knowing things don't match

Japanese style is almost always minimalist. And it's beautiful when combined with Feng Shui. (The art of placement.) Which creates an Amazing Minimalist space even without using any Japanese items! To use the Feng Shui method you first decide on the theme for each room and choose the best focal point. Everything else in the room has to then have a purpose of its own and be in harmony to the theme, while supporting the focus point. In Feng Shui there is also a power spot or point. It is always in the far left corner as seen when you enter the room. Though the focal point item can be placed there, it doesn't have to. The dining table maybe in the center of the room and is chosen to be the focal point. Pick an item that in some way reflects back on to support the focus to put in the power point. Maybe an item or the head seat at the table. Colors are always used to emphasize the theme. Don't be afraid to use them. Tho using an entire accent wall can be used, it should supports the theme. Usually not be the focal point alone. Outside gardens often have simple exotic flowers or plants. Every one has a purpose and water features are very common. A fountain makes a nice focus point. Curving, paths using fine sand, white stone or other gently colored paths are placed to enhance a gentle flow through the garden area. You can place a resting spot to sit for contemplation or meditation. The power point would be good if it has a clear view unobstructed view of the focal point, it should invite a Sim in not stand out on its own. It should be seen as a quiet place with a useful item, contributing to the overall theme. Something like growth and abundance as an example. Just some ideas I've learned and experimented with IRL over the years. There's a lot more to know about it of course. Furniture, planets, mirrors and decoration placement all have some meaning. Colors and elements are associated with all eight of the positional points in the room. (Which a specific outdoor area is considered.) These points all correspond with different aspects of life. The point of power or power point is the most significant. I know it sounds complicated until you try it. Even using the tips of having a theme, choosing a focus point and knowing where the point of power is, can be enough to get started. You'll be surprised how it just seems to bring a room together. And is far easiest to begin with minimalist project. Fewer items to think about. Maybe have a go at it with your next minimalist house? It's really fun to try something new!

It's all about decluttering and only buying things you need - it doesn't mean you can't have them in punchy colours. I would love to live in this house, it has a beautiful layout. But now as an adult I HATE having stuff 😂 Like, it's at a point where I don't have pictures on my wall or curtains on the windows, just the bare amount of furniture lol My house looks so blank and sad but I'm just happy it's not stuffed with...stuff 😂

Hey Deli, next time you do a minimal home you should maybe try experimenting with lighting! Like having more warm lighting and feature lights. And maybe making the house have darker lighting, like with lights that don’t fill up the whole room, which could make minimal interiors feel more homely, kinda like a cave in a way😂

Here in the states a lot of folks have taken to calling them “primary bedrooms” rather than master, especially in the real estate business. Which I like and I’ve trained myself into saying it as well. PS maybe the sims being red-headed led them to want a life of muted subtlety lol 🤣

RE: gardening. I studied gardening, landscape design, and greenhouse management in college back in the 80's. I also grew up with a garden in our back yard. Here are a few tips. On really hot days, only water in the evening to prevent scorching the plants. Water more often when it's hot out. In cooler weather, you can water less often. How often you water will depend upon the dryness of the soil and how fast it dries (of course). Keep an eye out for insect damage. If you get insects, take a sample leaf that has been damaged to your local sales greenhouse and ask them what kind of bug you have. Only use insect killer you can either wash off or that is non-toxic to humans and dogs. Also, you might want to make sure all the things you are growing are not toxic to Bowser. I am sure you already know that though. Just wanted to make sure you knew. :)

Hi Deli. Many have already commented but I just want to add on as a black American that the term "master bedroom" is not related to slavery. I think a minimal home for families can be good if done a certain way. Like for kids who are sensorily sensitive (either related to a diagnosis or just in general), it can be really helpful to not have many decorations and have more muted colours. Also clutter exacerbates stress so that part makes sense too - the less stress for a parent, the better! I think as long as kids aren't punished for being kids (i.e. messy) and the family is warm towards them, it's not a problem! And could be helpful for some kids even.

Regarding growing up in a minimal home… my mom’s interior style is not minimal - more transitional…. BUT her lifestyle was. No appliances on the counter except for the kettle and coffee container. No toys laying around. The decor had to be in place and not clutter around. Our home pc was moved from the living room to the garage because she couldn’t handle all the cables….. on Mondays coming home from school she would put all our toys and clutter on our bed to organise. I love my mom, but it did have an impact on me. I have horrible anxiety when she comes to visit or whenever someone comes over as in the back of my head it’s not acceptable to have skin care clutter on my bed side table or 2 dirty plates In the sink... normal things in a space where you live. I had to go for CBT to manage my anxiety around this. And I still struggle with it sometimes.

The term 'Master Bedroom' is NOT derived from any terms relating to slavery. The term started at the beginning of the 20th century and related to where the head of the house slept, who was usually a man, hence the term master of the house bedroom. The term was used all over the world in many languages and societies. In architectural designs the bedroom belonging to the owner of the house was shown as the master bedroom and that's where the term comes from.

You're right about putting the head of the bed under the window is bad fengshui. A wall gives a better support for the head of the bed (less chance to get hurt if something breaks the window). There are also things about the door and the mirror should not face the bed (too distracting when you want to relax/sleep), but hey sims are not bothered with them 😉

I've always lived in what I described as "display home" style houses. Mum and Dad were very clean and loved to display things. We always had an antique style front half and the modern back half. So all my friends were stunned by the high ceilings, fake fireplace, burgundy walls antique furniture, taxidermy etc. Then the rest of the house was always so clean and you weren't even allowed to move the couch cushions. Our bedrooms also had to be kept clean and tidy even though I am a creative with ADHD so I am an absolute mess. I'm so happy to be able to live in my own house now and not have to worry if there's a piece of clothing left on the couch. But I will say I get so worried when my parents or brother come over that they are going to think I'm lazy and live like a slob...even though to everyone else my house is really nice and normal.... it really does change you. I definitely didn't have a "homely" house in my childhood.

The term “master” in this context would refer to the head of the house and has been since before slavery so it doesn’t have an attachment to it. I wouldn’t feel bad about using it. It’s all about the context behind the word as opposed to the word itself and I don’t think it’s any deeper than that personally but I respect that some people think differently to that

It is just a way of life. I grew up in a home with all white walls and only exactly the same furniture as my two brothers. My mother is minimalist and ultra neat so she keeps the home sort of sterile, surgical clean. We find our own identity with things that are smaller and can be kept away such as clothes and accessories.
@aleksandragetka7385
@aleksandragetka7385 2 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: From the architectural point of view the „clean and sterile” with lots of sharp angles and non pleasant materials (depending where you live f.ex in California marble counters are cooling for the interiors, whereas in scandinavian countries that would be reather replaced with the wood) can have depressive impact on human life. Tho we can easily break it with implicating more of curves into life (cushions, blankets and other decorations) so that human eye does get distracted from focusing on the sharpness. Sharp = dangerous in our neuronal interpretation. Colours have huge emotional value to them and it also highly depends on the lighting on the property and personal preferences :)
