In this video I try the Augmented Reality functionality of the VR headset Meta Quest Pro. The idea is to see if virtual monitors is something that can replace your physical desktop monitors. How functional is it right now? Do I see a potential future for this technology? Or, is it really just a gimmick to sell you a new device?

I don't have the quest pro, but after working with virtual monitors on Quest 2 I have to say - the connectivity issue is most likely your laptop's wifi limitation and not the headset. Try a dedicated wifi6 router (one that won't thermo-throttle on the constant load). It kinda defeats the portability theme a bit, but that was the only way that worked for me.

Yes it has been demonstrated that most laptop wireless connectivity struggles with things like this, I agree that a wifi 6e antenna would fix or mostly mitigate the issue

It's not connectivity, it's a GPS tracking issue. I'll tell you, if you have a 5G connection there is no problem and things are @ 2K/4k with my PC. But GPS Tracking kills the experience.

I'm on month 2 working solely from my Quest Pro. Honestly, it has been amazing, to say the least. Immersed is awesome! However, I play games on Virtual Desktop. @@Alternatywny_1 Having owned both I would highly suggest the Pro, I have not had any connectivity issues as mentioned in the video. 1st - the quality of image is much better on the Pro, allowing me to work exclusively from the headset for long periods of time, especially with having to read small text without having to zoom in. 2nd - The connection to my remote computer seems to be much stronger on the Pro, even when connecting via hotspot while away from my computer. My setup in office is my 17-inch laptop with the headset using the Immersed app ( with wifi direct turned on allowing me to remote directly to my computer for better connection). When traveling or away from the office I use the VSpatial app to remote access my laptop while using a Bluetooth mouse & keyboard. I almost always use both Immersed & VSpatial in pass-through mode so I can be aware/ interact with my surroundings. I purchased the headset when it was $1,499 & still think it has been an awesome investment.

I’m so glad to have caught this video early. I think fair points were made. Keep in mind this headset will improve with each update. The Quest 2 is simply not the same headset it was when it was first released. Each update has brought new features, added stability, and even UI updates. We can expect the same for the Meta quest pro. I’d be interested in seeing a long term review after 6 months.
@bawbsmith
@bawbsmith Жыл бұрын
There’ll be improvements to software, but I don’t think the 6 month review will be much better. The hardware is simply not good enough. Screen resolution is not enough for a monitor replacement, the cameras are not good enough for AR, and while this use case doesn’t really require it, the battery life is too low. They can compensate some of this through optimization, but I think the Quest Pro just isn’t there yet. Maybe the quest Pro 2.

Boz is on record saying he wasn’t sure if they had enough spare CPU cycles to globally enable local dimming support - a literal keynote feature. The Pro is six pounds of sht in a five pound bag so don’t expect a Quest 2 style “glow up”

Latency and refresh is a solved issue (see VirtualDesktop). I do wish that Workrooms or Immersed whatever app is on the quest pro would treat your focussed screen like VirtualDesktop and keep the others bandwidth-limited, allowing you to configure options for changing focus by looking (head tracking or eye tracking now) or mouse pointer. I also actually think the nReal Air might be better for this purpose long term. I've had a good time with the nebula landing page and Samsung Dex, I just wish I could do 3 Dex screens side by side inside nebula and then I'd be onboard.

If one were really serious about say programming in a headset like this, I imagine it could work with a setup like this: * Locally running editor (maybe based on VS Code) * Locally connected mouse and keyboard (having the keyboard tracked and visible in VR would be a bonus) * Locally running web browser * Remote build server that runs any heavy compilation or processing.

The Virtual Desktop app is very useful for working, I've taken teams calls through the headset and then when its quiet, jump into a quick game. Having an external battery back solution, or being stationary and on charge is essential for getting a days worth of work in though, otherwise you're on for 3 hours max.

Tips: 1. if latency is an issue just use a usb cable. It's not too much of a hassle and I am getting 1ms response...it's truly unnoticeable. It also keeps your headset charged! 2. As others have said, turn off headset tracking in settings > system > headset tracking to avoid the screens moving while on the tram/plane.

Hi guys, I recently got the Meta Quest 3 and, using a good connection, this thing flies. Even with a laptop with an Iris XE graphics card and 16gb LPDDR5. So far, with 3 extra large screens using Immersed, it feels great. The passtrough has improved amazingly, and the pancake lenses combined with the 2 dedicated 2k screens (one for each eye) and the IPD adjustment makes it as comfortable as it could be. I'm using the free version (I believe I don't need the 4 USD subscription yet) and Internet in Argentina sucks regarding to speed and reliability. So I don't think I could leave my laptop home yet and just carry the headset and bluetooth keyboard/mouse. But you could, with the Immersed Pro subscription, having up to 5 4K screens floating arround and remote connection over internet. Still testing it in a coworking office to see how it "socially works". I guess I'll let you know... Greating from Argentina :)

One issue using it inside a cafe or somewhere public is not being able to properly see your surroundings. In the UK, you'd have a high chance of your laptop or something being stolen right from under you. (Obviously also depends on the area you live) The fact the virtual displays covers up most of your vision (even in passthrough mode) would lead you to becoming an easy target. Obviously without VR you'd still have a chance of being mugged.. But a WAY higher chance when your eyes are covered and you can't notice someone running at you in your POV wearing a balaclava.

I think it would be pretty easy to eliminate the unwanted turning while working in a vehicle, either by the developers or via third-party plugins. Since the headset already has a camera, you would simply need to determine one or more reference points in your environment either manually or automagically to determine wether the turning is initiated by the user or not.
@Thezuule1
@Thezuule1 Жыл бұрын
The conflict between the sensors and the cameras trying to do that is what is causing the problem. I'm pretty sure you can just shut off the headset tracking in those situations and use it as a 3dof device. I've done that in the car with my Quest 2. If you leave the tracking on whenever the car turns and stuff it messes everything up.
@sid.h

@@Thezuule1 I see! I didn't know they were already using the cameras for orientation. In that case, there are definitely some quirks that need ironing out! To be fair, the developers might not have considered the use case of using the device in a moving vehicle.

Hey Calle. Thank you for all the effort you put into this project. Maybe you want to give the "work from vr" topic another try by using a app called immersed to connect your MQP to your Mac. The software has a great community that's always helpful about getting the best results from your setup. I use immersed with the MQ2 since nearly 1.5 years and I never want to go back to a traditional setup. True, there are some tradeoffs and I am surely kind of biased 'cause I'm loving new tech but you can absolutely squeeze some more usability out of the MQP with the right tools and techniques if you want to. Again, thank you very much for for all the great videos and content you deliver to us.

thank you for trying those scenarios for me. don't want to seem crazy. but the idea of having 3 virtual screens in front of you anywhere is a good idea. imagine a person in a car as a passenger to have 3 screens in front of their eyes.

People generally like VR for immersion and gaming. But they like AR for productivity, or at least that's what I've seen from my anecdotal experience. The future truly lies in both and the company that can fully satisfy both demands will be the true winner in the VR market.

I could see it work really while if there is a "Work mode" so screen do not move base of position. So they just stick in front of you and you take a NUC with battery for on the go. Its now really in development for gaming so I wouldnt see it coming to working if gaming improves even more

great video. love the honesty. AI is so much to play around with, but not practical yet. I love the sound and music effects that you added to the video. i personally prefer the reviewing type of video where a person explores the idea instead of your normal vlog. anyway thanks for the video

First ! its a blast from the past for me to watch kalle's videos once again ! I wanted to mention that theres a hobby out there called FPV where you gotta where similar kinda goggles only that you control a drone which flies really fast and makes people super nauseous minus the huge noise and attraction the flying drone and a cyborg looking human being standing somewhere and flying it . But I must mention since someone like me did overcome those sort of motion sickness and fear from the lack of situational awareness I could totally look forward to use this instead of a physical monitor provided it supports a mouse , in which case its super cool .

I really love your approach in terms of quality over quantity, which is something I want to follow in the future.

Great production value on this video. Congratulations! Were you inspired by How I Met Your Mother's Barney's playbook? :) Looking forward to seeing what Apple will bring as well.

Its interesting you're having connectivity issues.. I work in VR every single day USUALLY for a full work day (software engineer).. I do use Immersed tho, not workrooms. But even when i used workrooms it was very snappy.. I haven't used it in a few weeks so maybe they've had an update since then that trashed things but idk.. Ill check it out today.. If you try out Immersed theres a wifi direct option which creates a direct link between your computer and the headset and the latency is unnoticeable. Maybe give that a try.

One thing they nailed is the design. They look really nice and professional given where the tech is at in It's current state.

it should have a usb c port to connect to laptops, I like this tech bc this is how we get real life holograms I also can't wait to see shared augmented reality in the future.
