Mob is already the most powerful esper in the world, he doesn't need a master who can teach him about physic powers, he needs a master that can teach him how to be human, and that's what Reigen is. That's the beauty of Mob Psycho, Mob's insanely strong powers a useless for getting him what he wants, the girl that he loves, friends, and a normal life. Reigen brings that normalcy and gave Mob his first true friendship, as he grows on a personal level under his wing, Mob will likely come to acquire the final thing which he desires. I think that many people miss the role that Tsubomi plays in all of this. She's almost always there, looking on from a distance and smiling as she sees Mob grow. She always acts unimpressed or uncaring about his powers because she wants him to gain confidence in himself for who he is and not for his powers. That's the crux of the show, that ones worth comes not from their strength or natural born gifts, but from their efforts to better themselves.

I think this will always be one of the most well-written character arcs between any two protagonists. The build up for Reigen's guilt compounding on the fact that in the moment when Mob says he always knew what Reigen really was, he was probably feeling almost every negative emotion you could think of. The guilt from holding Mob back and using him, the anger from his thought that Mob pitied him, the rise and fall of his success, and the sadness that was always present for him. And the scene was set up in such a brilliant way where you might think Mob is going to shatter Reigen's emotions right then and there but then they hit you with that callback to Reigen telling Mob that kindness was key and that Mob would need to become a good person with or without his psychic powers. Frankly, I don't know how anyone who understands this scene and these two characters could not tear up a bit at it. I've seen a lot of media and read a lot of stories but this dynamic was done so well it still gets me over a year after watching it. ONE and Bones did such an incredible job with this, it baffles me that it's not one of the most popular anime out there.

Even without the context, the scene is incredibly powerful. Months ago before I had ever watched the anime, a friend kept trying to convince me to watch it and how different it is from other ones. He kept failing, until he sent me this scene. This is what I saw. You have a man who obviously is showing sadness about something he has done, asking a child if he knows. The child says he does (finding out it's his master), and then right when you're expecting him to call his master something horrible, he tells him he's a good person. A child shows such kindness to somebody on this level, and you don't know how long they've been master and student if you've never seen the anime. It hits you hard emotionally, and is incredibly heartwarming. This scene alone made me watch the anime, I wanted to know the depths of the relationship, and how hard this hit in context. It hit even harder.

Looking back at season 1 it starts seeming like Mob actually did know the entire time that Reigen did not have any powers, a lot of his dialogue when rewatching seem to be some subtle way of Mob making jokes at his master, but it comes of as him just being clueless due to his suppressed emotions. Giving the impression that he stayed around him due to him genuinely being a good person trying to help Mob and was being taught life lessons, probably also just to have a friend of sorts. I like to think the whole split off in season 2 is a lot of Mob learning that he does not in fact need Reigen anymore to emotionally support him, but instead realizing that perhaps Reigen needs him as well. A nice way of showing Mob growing up and becoming the kind person Reigen told him to be.

There's a Japanese pun that's hard to translate where Mob says Reigen didn't have Pyschic energy, he was his master because of his spiritual energy. He looked up to Reigen because of his emotional support, not because he had any magic power. And Reigen while being a fraud knew exactly how to guide Mob from not giving into murderous rage. Reigen might not have been the best religious guidance, but be found a kid with true divine powers and his first instinct was kid needs a moral sensei to guide him. I can do that.

My friends call this the 'empty nest' arc. And really, it is. It was never about business or money or using Mob for those things, and probably hadn't been for a long time by that point. Reigen was happy and kept spirits and co going because he had a protege to support and help grow. There wasn't some sudden profit, the work itself didn't change. Mob growing up and needing him less was the source of Reigen's panic; when you put everything into helping your children have the best life they can, what do you do when you don't have to anymore? I think reigen found that out, and then...the world didn't end, miraculously. He'll be here for mob, come what may, but give him space to flourish now. And they'll both be ok. sA beautiful arc.

Earlier in the episode when Reigen was getting roasted on the internet. There was a comment that read something along the lines of "if I were caught being such a fraud I'd end myself." If Mob decided not to show up and save Reigen, I'm almost certain that thoughts of overwhelming failure, loneliness, and self pity would have lead to Reigen taking his own life as soon as he got home from that press conference. He looked so relieved and greatful after Mob called him a genuinely good person. Almost as if Reigin was thinking "At the very least I'm glad my lesson about kindness and positivity really rubbed off on you Mob. Your the true embodiment of a genuinely good guy"

I was getting vibes that this was kind of supposed to parallel Mogami. Despite not actually being psychic, the media being a fickle monster was part of what got Mogami to turn down such a dark path. i’ve seen this scene a thousand times but only just now do i realize how strong the parallel is. if you listen, mob uses reigen’s exact words back at him again with ‘good person’ (the subtitles make it seem different) . it immediately cuts to that past scene and while it doesn’t show subtitles for reigen’s lip syncing there, that was the exact part when he said those words. the shot of young mob then spins back around to reigen, further highlighting that mob is doing for reigen what reigen once did for him. i never realized that to the full extent before.

Yeah, it was obvious to me only because I know a little Japanese. And there's another line with the very same problem, S2ep12 if I remember correctly. During Mob's conversation with Seri, he used a very particular word for "see you as a person", the same one from what Reigen told him in the s1 flashback scene (where it was translated to "kindness"). Even though I know it can't be helped, it's still a shame that a lot less people would draw the parallels.

Nah man I think a lot of people get this wrong. Mob is clueless that’s literally his whole character and his growth is him getting less clueless. The point of this is like in many other instances, like the girl asking him out as a joke or him forgiving the possessed girl, mob took the high road. He didn’t really realize he was a fake but it doesn’t matter because he helped mob when he needed him most and now mob was there for him when he needed him most

Ed Sullivan Well, I don't think that's entirely true.. looking back on season one, one scene i can tell you is truely off is when Reigen asked Mob for more "juice" (his powers) and Mob simply replied he was out of gas too. Didn't that seem very weird? Like wouldn't he ask? I think that was intentional. That was the scene that made me rethink, Mob truely did always know, or knew later down the road.

Im glad they still use the sun/light as hope in this scene Reigen was walking away from the sun while Mob is facing at it. When Reigen felt guilt the shadow ii getting bigger on his face but as soon as Mob said he is a good guy, the light grows on to Reigen. In the end they walk toward the light together Edit: Maybe Im thinking too much lol

Reigen totally expected him to say "a loser" or "a fake" but just like it doesn't matter if you're a psychic or a genius at sports. It also doesn't matter that you're a "loser" in the measurement of society if you're a good person. Reigan isn't a CEO, married, nor does he have many friends who knows he exist. But he did save one kid with his words. You never know what a moment of kindness can do for someone, even if unintended it can influence someone's life for the better. For that person they don't care about the other things, you're amazing in the part that matters.

One isn't an artist. He's a writer that uses art as a medium to tell his stories. I saw the thumbnail, read the title and assumed Mob tells Reigen he's always known hes not a real physic. when i got to this episode, and i saw the sunset with reigen walking i knew i had gotten to the scene where mob tells reigen he always knew. but then, as i heard mob say those simple words, i had the same reaction as reigen and realized whether or not Mob truly knows that reigen has no physic abilities doesnt matter. Diego Barreto admittedly after watching season 1 over a couple of times you can actually start to tell mob has always known as he tells us in this scene. Watching season one 1 with your main focus on mobs reactions to Reigen you can tell he’s 100% aware. through my first watch I took his sacarstic comments towards Reigen as pure obliviousness when faced with a situation and he kind of is just like “oh I thought you’d handle it” but after a 2nd or 3rd watch through once finishing season two it kind of just hits you in the face lol.
@caib714
@caib714 4 жыл бұрын
Yea this scene was excellently executed to confirm that Mob caught on to Reigen's lack of power long time ago, without directly addressing it. Mob was naive in the beginning when he met Reigen, and he did sense Reigen's odd behaviors because he was suspecting something was off by asking innocent questions in which Reigen made up answers. When Reigen was exposed as a fraud, Mob came to rescue him and made things float at the press conference to make it seem like Reigen was doing it so that the world would stop thinking he was a fraud. Reigen is a complex character where he is not a "real" fraud because he does help his clients with Mob's real psychic powers to do good, and serve as a good role model to be good in society with his wisdom and experiences, even if he does have other flaws, his most relevant qualities help those around him to make him a genuinely good person at the end of the day. And it's these qualities that Mob chooses to see in his Master over his minor shady business tactics. This relates to all of us who have both good and bad qualities. I didn't expect Mob to answer his Master's question so gracefully when Reigen was at his lowest point, that it also brought tears to my eyes as a grown ass man T.T

Man all of you here have it wrong and it make the scene less impactful since you have it wrong. Literally the whole point of mobs character is that he’s clueless to everything and part of his growth is him becoming less clueless and handling social situations compassionately. He didn’t know reigen was a fake he found out this episode, the whole point is he doesn’t care at all and he’s just thankful he’s was there for him when mob needed him most. It’s another example of mob taking the high road in a situation where he should justifiably be mad like with his brother, the girl who asked him out off a bet or the possessed girl from a few episodes before

투루 think of all the times reigen called mob and mob asked him to handle it himself, you think mob would say that knowing reigen was completely helpless, you think that is mobs character? What he wanted to stick it to reigen or make him admit he’s a fake? No not at all. The whole point of Mob psycho is the growth of mob and exploring his character. You really think mob is the type of character to knowingly put his arguably closest friend in life threatening danger to stick it to him or something? Crazy

Imma try my hand at symbolism here with that little shot from 1:11 to 1:14. That area shown in the time frame, if I'm not mistaken, was the spot where Mob and Reigen had their fight. The section of wall with graffiti, to be precise, is covered in shadow, and it sure feels like a dark, depressing place to be at. It's a good thing, then, that past that dark spot is where the sun shines its light beautifully when you take but a few steps to move forward.

Didn't think about it like this yet, but now as you said it: It really seems to symbolise that fight and the consequenses from it which were left behind.

It's such a simple, sweet scene that just had tears streaming down my face. No death, no violence, no angst, just one person reassuring another that they're a good person and they value that. God, Mob Psycho 100 is easily one of my new favorite anime and shows period.

I feel like this episode is going to stick out in my mind for a long time. Season 2 all around has been fucking spectacular but Reigen's arc in particular hit me really hard, in a way that not alot of anime have.
