I have done the stainless kit on 4 of these trucks now. A body lift makes it a breeze and is now a requirement for any gmt800 I own lol. I have the job down to about 4 hours now.

I used to to complete line installs front to rear. My fastest time was about 4.5 hours from start to finish. I hated doing lines at first, but then nobody else wanted to do them, so I ended up "training" way more than anyone else. I cut and flared and bent all my own lines. Reused all the fittings in the abs module, if you're using standard 1/4 inch the rf and rear are there longest lines. If you go in sequence on the abs module, you can tighten as you go. Worst part was always teardown. Don't want to break trans or fuel lines. I ended up loving doing lines because I knew the keys came straight to my toolbox when they got towed in. Pay good, never used a scan tool to bleed.

You don't need a computer to bleed the ABS. Just jack it up with all 4 tires off the ground, put it in 4x4 and put it in gear. Jam the brakes on a few times and it tricks the ABS into activating because it thinks you're slipping. Then bleed the brakes as normal.

I did this job recently on my '02 Suburban. The flare nuts in my ABS block took a lot of heat to get them loose. I was worried I might have damaged it but everything works like it should. I have a two post lift in my shop which made it easier than crawling on the floor. I'm glad its over with.

Commenting before I watch. I started this job today and got all the brake lines out in one piece except for the rear which was rusted. I kind of just wish I sent it to the shop for this one. Those Chinese finger trap clips made me absolutely lose my mind! I had to take the running boards off. I got the Dorman stainless kit.

I never replaced brake lines yet, but doing any brake job by yourself isn't easy, especially the bleeding part. But this is encouraging to see it can be done and the difference between OEM and knock offs. When you are taking a long road trip with your family and pulling a trailer, quality brakes are an absolute MUST!!! And it is good to pull your spare tire out once in a while, even include them in the rotation schedule (assuming a real matching tire, not a donut) to give all tires even wear, and you will be in good practice when you have to change your tire on the side of the road. What you went through to get that spare out in the shop would have been a dangerous nightmare had you been on the side of the freeway at night! Adding your spare to the rotation not only keeps you in practice of pulling it out and back in quickly, but also keeps the parts from rusting and getting stuck at the worst possible moment.

I used the stainless classic tube kit on my 04 avalanche, it was not as bad as I thought it would be. Biggest help was lifting the drivers side.

Just did the hydroboost swap on my 2002 Tahoe. During the bleeding process of the booster I blew out the rear brake line... Great videos!

I can completely replace all the brake lines on a Silverado in about 3 and a half hours. Takes about a roll and a half of bulk line. I love the copper nickel alloy stuff. So much easier to work with.

I’ve got an 03 Yukon that I’m getting ready to replace the lines…I’m dreading this so badly. It’s the exact same setup (no stabilitrak) so this was very helpful. I’ve seen some people take the body mounts off and lift the body a few inches off the frame to make it easier to do but Idk if I wanna do all that. I love your Tahoe videos btw, they’re really helping with my Yukon build.

I'm on my second one of this generation truck,tahoe went to junkyard at400 thousand,my current yukon xl is at 160,and I am keeping it until it dies...my opinion these are the best trucks ever made. Brother I just want to thank you for all the content all the nights wrenching and showing the good and the bad,but most importantly all the little things that you get hung up on like broken bolts,hard to reach areas ect.your videos save me a ton of time on upgrades and repairs..nice work and please keep them coming the information is priceless to guys like me...also my first car was a 89 rs 305 white and red interior....love that damm car...

@@Johnny-jr2lq the passenger side front to ABS module is a horrible time, but Copper Nickle allows you to form as you go, you can feed it in and curve it as needed. i loosened body bolts, lifted a couple inches and fed it through from the front right wheel, across and back, slowly shaping as I went. took 15 about minutes. You can shape Copper Nickle with any round object, and double flaring is way easier since it's softer material

Another great video Matt! Man i wish i had your drive to get it done! I believe Ni-Copp is pretty much UN-rustable. if i recall they use similar material in ship building for salt water and highly corrosive stuff. it's my go to and it looks great. For brake lines, its a lifetime fix.

I did my break lines for my 01 Yukon xl in about two hours in my driveway. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Just don't let the ads run dry or your in serious trouble. I paid 80 bucks for stainless steel online.Mm

Man I don't envy you driving in New York. I was out there with safelite auto glass in 2015 to help them out, in long Island, and it's so heavily crowded and roads are just so wacky compared to Ohio. I love following along with this build. I just did front and rear pads and rotors on my 01 Yukon XL. Mine is the vacuum booster. It somehow got down to metal on metal back passenger but the slides and everything were working. Stops just fine now but I'm wondering if it's just these trucks, that when you hit the pedal it travels a little farther than other cars I've owned. Or it's the vacuum system. Maybe my booster is going bad. I don't know. The brakes work so I'm not gonna mess with it. I've owned 70 plus cars and, knock on wood, never had to replace brake lines or even hoses. I've had this truck since March and put 7k miles on it, and had no check engine or abs or any lights. Has the typical broken exhaust manifold bolt exhaust leak so it ticks loud but it still gets 15 city and 19 highway

Grate videos, a lot of usable information. I replaced break lines with Dorman 919-154 stainless on my 2005 Escalade. I never did this before. It takes about 5 hours first day and 6 hours second day. I took 4 body mounting bolts out from driver side and jacked body from the frame about 2" and put 2X4. I bot a 2-nd sett of the same lines for 2003 Escalade.

Replacing the brake lines on my 02 is one job I wish I had done myself instead of trusting "pros". They told me my caliper bleeds were too rusted and sold me on new calipers, rotors and pads all around. $1700 total. A year later I had a ruptured rear brake line. Apparently, they "forgot" to replace the crossover one. Another year later left rear caliper failed. Another year later right rear caliper failed. And for reasons unknown, all four rotors had bad corrosion on the rear surface with only about an inch of smooth surface in the center. Needless to say, this experience reinforced my long term practice of doing my own work when I can. Money isn't the issue and I have better things to do but good, trustworthy mechanics are hard to find.

I spent 6 months hyping myself up to replace the lines in my 03 Esky and on the weekend I finally decided to tackle it, I lifted the truck looked around, put the truck back down, ate lunch and dropped it off at the shop. 1200 well spent.... Good thing you found out your spare tire latch was seized in the garage and not on the side of the road.

I didnt even raise mine. And as for that wind down tire holder. My spare is in the very back. Wd40 the wire reel rolled it up. Like to never got spare down. holder rolled down. tire stayed up.

Gotta love it, as a tech up in mass this is all too familiar. The line under the bed is always a nightmare, especially on duramax trucks. Usually just run a straight section from the module to the brake hose for that one

I was hoping you'd clean/lube/address that whole spare tire carrier and give it all the same love you did on areas around it. I lost the cable for mine (on my Dakota) once. Thankfully, I was easing into a driveway when the spare let go and dropped. I realized what it was immediately, and simply plopped the spare into the bed and went and bought a new assembly to fix it. In any case, another fine job done there Matt. Much appreciated.

Some one replaced every line on mine except the rear. I have to unscrew all the other lines at the ABS sensor to gain access to the line to the rear which is right up against the frame. I have the whole kit of SS lines incase of an issue with the others. I have to do fuel lines too so I am going to just drop the tank.

So, I can plan for this fun job about how long do you think it took with everything from lines to new rear calipers n brake booster? I also plan on doing the PPV upgrade. Went down a hill when my abs activated, went to hit the brake pedal and it sunk to the floor and blew my main front brake line from that brake valve, I will never forget that moment

Another great video! My 06 Silverado broke the rear brake line at the "j-bend" before the tee. Apparently a very common place for breaking. My 04 Suburban lines seem to be okay but I think could benefit from a stainless braided front hoses. BTW this reminds me that I think my proportioning valve is leaking...

Could be the exhaust manifold bolts at the rear driver side. I recommend checking all exhaust manifold bolts. Those are commonly misdiagnosed as lifter ticks because they sound very similar.

My 96 Sierra had the usual piss poor brakes....4 jackstands and 4 wheel drive at 30MPH, mash brakes (actuated module) ... Bleed out the goo and it was way better.

Nobody in my family has ever had to change brake lines in GM trucks or SUVs. We live in MN as well, easily over a million miles out on vehicles we've owned since I got my license 28 years ago. Never had a 4L60 issue either.

To do the job right you have to take the body off the frame. Rock auto did have stainless steel full kits for $150.00

Brother I’m in the middle of doing brake lines on my 01 GMC Sierra 2 door short bed step side. And I’m honestly considering buying another truck my truck has soooooo much rust under it. I found a couple holes in the frame that can be fixed but it was so disappointing. I’m finding compression fittings in the lines it really sucks because I truly love this truck. I don’t want to send it to the scrap yard but it basically needs EVERYTHING. Door skins the cab corners are not rotted through but it’s coming the passenger side finder is shot the rockers need to be replaced. So basically what I’m looking at is a complete restoration. But here’s the thing I’m looking at used trucks and it’s ridiculous like I seriously can completely restore this vehicle for the cost of a used truck right now. So I’m seriously not sure what to do didn’t mean to ramble but I thought I would leave my dilemma

I just recently did the larger 07 brakes on the front of my yukon thanks to you. Appreciate the content. Quick question, when you did yours...did you notice a significant difference in how far the brake pedal goes down with the larger brakes? I don't notice a difference with mine, but I "feel" it stops better now.

I refuse to buy the prebent lines anymore, I used prebent stainless on a tahoe and it was a complete pain in the a*s. Now I just did every line on a 04 gmc 2500 and I used the copper/nickel line. It's the easiest line to work with, it's soft so it bends very easily and it will never rot out again. Another trick I do if you have the time is once all the lines are replaced I Crack all the bleeders and let it gravity bleed first, it seems to make getting them to bleed way easier.

I had the displeasure of doing the rear lines on my Tahoe with traction control. Doing that on a crooked gravel driveway and fighting with every fastener rusted beyond belief was a worse job than doing all the rust repair and bodywork on my other car.
