I've been living in Europe 4 months, here are style lessons I've learned in Croatia, Portugal

I've been living in Europe for almost 4 months, and these are some European style lessons and observations that everyone can learn. Every European country and region has it's own style and this video isn't meant to generalize, instead I hope you enjoy these European style lessons if you want to dress like a European this summer!
On this channel, I share #slowfashion​​​​​ and #sustainablefashion​​​​​ tips that center around how to #shopyourcloset, and restyling pieces you already own. I also spotlight brands that I believe in every now and then. I believe in #creativityoverconsumption​​​​​, and that we all have the power to be conscious consumers.

Tips from a European: 1. Invest in good underwear - no matter your outfit, this is key. 2. Choose good fabrics. 3. Take everything to your seamstress for a perfect fit. 4. Acknowledge when your body changes and adapt. 5. The bag goes with the shoes - gentlemen: the belt goes with the shoes. 6. Good sunnies elevate any style. 7. Make sure your hair is healthy and does not look overdone or tired. 8. Posture - no matter what, it is HOW you wear it. 9. Clean shoes, please. 10. A personal scent.

I’m disabled with severe mobility issues. I spend most of my time having to lie flat in bed. I’m also single and usually on my own, as no family nearby. For the hour or so, every few days that I leave my house to go for a coffee, I make bloomin’ sure I look good, with nice clothes, hair done and a bit of makeup. I might be changing back into pyjamas after an hour or so but while I’m out, I want to FEEL I look good!! So important for psychological welfare. Thank you for teaching me so much about style and helping me to think through my purchases more carefully. xx

I was mostly bed- or sofa-bound last year and left my house once every 2 weeks to go to the oncologist or hospital for tests and treatment. I did exactly the same as you: I dressed in my favourite clothes to feel my best. It’s an important part of the psychology of feeling good about yourself, and creating hope. In Spain we tend to wear loungewear at home and dress only to leave the house - when I get home I change back into my loungewear, so sometimes I will only be wearing an outfit for an hour or two and put it away for another day. I kind of felt sorry for all my carefully selected, beautiful clothes that had been sitting unused in my wardrobe while I didn’t go out so I “showed them some love” and showed myself some self-care in the process. If I don’t dress to leave the house - even just to pop to the supermarket - I don’t feel good about myself and feel as if I have let myself down. We all deserve to feel our best.

I’m 73, live in California and see the worst in fashion here. I love to dress nicely. Makeup, something fresh and pretty to wear and poof! You feel incredible even popping to the market! Love this video, but as a “European” why don’t you say “living in this and this country” instead of “Europe”? Europe is a continent and people in Scandinavia dress totally different than in Italy or the UK for example. EDIT: the Video Title was changed to include Portugal and Croatia, which is great 😊

Indeed, it would be like me, a Dane, saying that I have lived in the Americas when I have actually lived in Mexico, Canada and Idaho, USA - as an example. Or Noth America, and then only having lived in the US and ignoring Canada. I love Italian style, but not sure about the french (doesnt really seem to flatter my size and body type) but feel most at home in the Scandinavian simple, but architectural style …. so while I appreciate your video, as always, just want to support that Europe is not one country or style. But we do like to look good 😁

I'm originally from Spain, and one of the things that really surprised me since living here was that when I went out running errands (food shopping or a place like Target, for example) is that people were dressed in PJ pants and slippers. Like they literally got out of bed and couldn't be bothered to change. If I went out of the house like that, my mother would lock me up!

Lived in Madrid for almost 6 years. Things I learned: Never leave the house without: your hair done Perfume ironed clothes coordinated outfits and in the summer, your fan must go with the outfit. Biggest style hack? Get your clothes tailored! In the U.S. we think of off the rack as it must fit perfectly to you from the start - in Europe, off the rack is the jumping off point for you to get clothes tailored to your body. There is nothing better than a shirt where the sleeves are the proper length, the length of the shirt falls perfectly when left untucked, and across the breast doesn't have a gap when you raise your arms. Same said for skirts, dress and jackets. You always look polished.

You're so right about us here in America. It's so disheartening to see people walking around not caring about what they look like. It's not about having the trendiest, most expensive clothes. You could be dressed head to toe in Walmart (which has been killing it this year with their online fashion options) and look put together if it's clean, pressed, and your hair isn't dirty. I just don't get it, and I really believe if people made half of an effort, it would go a long way in improving their mood and outlook.

I'm from Monterrey México and it really is beautiful, even when you go to HEB everyone is so nicely dressed, you don't see people in yoga pants and sports wear unless they're literally going or coming from the gym. I love seeing people dressed up. You don't have to be in heels and look like your about to go to a club but just like Alyssa, elegant and comfortable. I do love watching this, especially the travel videos.

This is so refreshing. I am French living now in Southern California where people are so casual and do not care how they look they just want to be comfortable. I used to live in NYC and it was a completly story people usually dress very nicely and want to look unique. Going to France in a few weeks I can't wait to catch up these vibes again : nicely dressed, good food, elegance, beautiful archictecture, history....

I came from Europe and live in London and it is safe to say the majority of the time they have way more time on their hands, life is slower. Although, I agree we have become lazy here in London.

Also a large house to care for. My son and his family live in an apartment in Basel, Switzerland. They are on the street and riding trams to their destinations, where I have to drive 45 minutes over mountains to get to my frequent destinations. I rambled there, but you had me thinking of the contrast. 🙋🏻

My philosophy when it comes to getting dressed each day is, ‘Dress like you’re going somewhere better later.’ I keep very few clothes for ‘best’, as I like to get my price per wear out of everything. People at work often tell me that I look more dressy than they do when they go out for the evening, which used to make me feel a like they thought I was trying too hard, but now I just tell them that I want to get the wear out of my clothes, and they generally say, “Hmm, I suppose you’re right”. I enjoy putting outfits together and everything I do buy (not too much or too often) goes with everything else in my wardrobe which is so helpful. I live in England, and although there are many stylish women, the majority are very casual and not ‘put together’.

My philosophy tends to be “what won’t get damaged at work and will be easy to launder”. Idk how well dressed people deal with laundry. Sheets, towels and blankets already take up half the week, how am I supposed to wear a variety of ironed colours and fibres and have time to live?

@@ahumanaperson personally I think most washing programs are unnecessary. I have two piles for clothing: pale and dark. Both get washed on a "Quick wash" setting at 40°C which takes just under an hour. Everything goes in there: underwear, all fabrics, things which say hand wash only or dry clean only. Very few things are ever damaged. In winter if I can't line dry it all goes in the tumble dryer too except things with a high percentage of wool because those are most likely to shrink and the drying setting I use is 90°C for 90 minutes. It comes out slightly damp but shaking out the steam from the clothes with the window open is enough to dry them (except jeans and thick jumpers which need finishing off on the radiator). Doing it this way means I damage the occasional item due to incorrect care but it's worth the loss for the sake of a simplified life whilst still being able to look good.

I learnt from her and I try to do my best, but many people think that it is a superficial attitude. Me and my brother (we are from Portugal) were kind of shocked when we went to the US and people just don't care about what they wear. It's like people don't know how to put clothes together? The idea we got is that people just don't care. And it was very confusing to us because even in our casual wear we pay some kind of attention to details, shapes, accessories. Wearing some perfume can go a long way, for example. We can look casual without looking like we got dressed in the dark.

My opinion: grew up in Croatia, lived in Canada for 23 years now. People don’t have time and energy here. Everywhere is far, time spent commuting is crazy. Then at work you are severely overworked, you come home and still work for family. No time to live, sleep, eat, breathe. No one cares about the looks as long as you show up to work the next day.

What a FANTASTIC post! And love that you included Croatian style (that's my heritage on my father's side). I remember teasing my Mom when she was ironing my undies during a visit home. She said, "Growing up during the Depression, we learned that you can always look presentable if your clothes are clean and well pressed." I, frankly, have lamented the state of "slob-ism" in the U.S. and yet, so many people overreact about such criticism, when, in fact, it takes little $ to present well. This is particularly ironic, given how much money most people spend on the contents of their closets. I toured Europe numerous times as a dancer, and was often embarrassed about many in the troupe giving such a bad impression of American style. Even the everyday routines are elevated by tending to your grooming and style.

I too am Croatian, fathers side. And my mother did the same ironing everything. We even ironed wrapping paper to reuse. I learned from my English mother to always leave the house nicely dressed. It has carried me through 73 years. Her biggest imprint was saying, “Be sure to have on clean panties in case you are in an accident”. 🙄🤣

Having grown up in Chile 🇨🇱, I remember no one leaving the house without brushing their hair, putting on lipstick and changing shoes. Even to go buy a loaf of bread. There's no "schlepping around". The weather was always a little cooler in the morning and again at night because of the mountains, so you carry a sweater or jacket with you for later, and you wear it on your shoulders or tied around your waist or shoulders. Now, living in Toronto, I always carry a scarf with me, even in summer, to wear in the air conditioned spaces or later at night if I'm staying out late. Occassionaly, a pair of socks in my bag in case I get chili.

This was a great video. I love knowing the styling “hacks” from other counties. So many of these deal with the French esthetic and while that’s nice. I think it’s been done to death. There is more to Europe than France.

Absolutely. The French are the best at self-promotion, which means that they usually get all the attention. But, in reality, the Italians are sheer masters at style. Croatia, Spain, Portugal and many others are hidden style gems.

@@BlackCoffeeee In fact, Eurocentrism is a huge problem in our world, because they love to make the rest of us think everything should center around Europe and Europeans. There is a massive global colonial mentality at play there. Sorry, but I think there is plenty of over-hype when it comes to Italians as well. There is so much more beauty in this world to be explored in every possible subject you can imagine. There is so much in various European cultures that have been influenced by non-European cultures, from food to fashion and a lot of those Europeans (who are masters of cultural appropriation and exploitation) would turn around and take credit for those things.

As a child in the 1970s, in the US, I recall seeing the more mature ladies wearing a jacket over the shoulders. Glad to know it's coming back around.

For that trend, I think it would be best to sew a chain (made out of metal, leather, what have you) that attaches to a button on the other side. With the chain below the collar, the coat can sit on the shoulders without falling off!

Loved the format and loved your observations, Alyssa. As a Brit living in Canada (Vancouver Island) I've struggled for years with coming to terms with dressing more casually in order to feel like I fit in. Since Covid hit I've re-embraced my inner European and started 'dressing' again and I feel so much more like me while still enjoying the lifestyle here on the beautiful west coast. Dressing up is great and saying no to yoga pants and sweatshirts every day is great too, but people need to realize in some parts of America, it really is just not practical to dress even semi-nice on a regular basis, and I'll tell you why. When you live on a farm or have a lot of land, especially in the Midwest, and you actually LIVE ON and INTERACT WITH the land, you are dealing with a lot of mud! You are dealing with grass, burrs, weeds, walking up and down uneven hills, etc. Boots are a must...but they are too hot for summer, so you need sandals that can handle it, not cute little kitten-heels. You need jeans or a denim skirt unless you want your clothes ruined in short time. Not everyone lives in a city apartment. (hardly anyone does). Even suburban life requires clothes that need to be functional and durable. When you mow your own 3 acres, maintain your own house, possibly have many animals (livestock or otherwise), then yeeeeessss, you sometimes throw on whatever you can find at the time that is clean vs look for a "stylish" outfit. I'm just mentioning this in defense of a large portion of America...it's not necessarily about being a slob. If you lived the lifestyle of someone maintaining land, and you're not wealthy enough to hire out al your dirty work, you would quickly understand. The weather extremes here are so different than in many parts of Europe. Sometimes they just do not understand how different our winters or summers are compared to milder versions. That can really impact your wardrobe choices.

I've lived in Zagreb (on and off) for a year now and my goodness... The first thing I noticed when I walk down my street, which is Ilica, the most trendy catwalk for fashionistas, is how immaculately dressed people are. Most of the time they have shopping bags and heels !!! Just to get around and do some shopping. I feel guilty every time I wake up and put my boho everyday clothes on and head to the market on foot, like a criminal.

It makes me laugh when fashion youtubers "discover" style hacks that I was doing when I was growing up in France (I am in my sixties). I said that before but they were not seen as style hacks but as comfort and a way of having a piece of clothing when it gets chilly and you don't need a tote bag to carry your sweater and/or your jacket. It was definitely not considered cool to carry a large bag except when going grocery shopping....also love the idea of sharing Instagram accounts! I am looking for minimalist chic mostly black outfits accounts!!!

As a European who lived in a few different countries, elegance and simplicity are definitely key. Simple clean-cut clothes, neutral colors - nothing too showy or matchy-matchy, nice fabrics, sleek hair, jewellery is a must! but keep it thin and dainty, good healthy skin and hair are a big part of looking nice!, not many accessories but a nice bag goes a long way and it doesn't have to be a designer bag, italian leather bags look quite clean and sophisticated. Red or neutral nail polish. Kinda like Alicia Vikander's style, she's amazing.

Street photography has been a thing in that region since the 1950s looking through my friends & family's photo albums though. It’s not the outfit but how you put it together. I’ve seen well-dressed people in yoga pants. There’s a woman in my neighbourhood who goes for morning runs looking fabulous. Everything is coordinated and looks good on her and it’s running gear. I don’t throw just anything on to go to the gym or to yoga and pay attention to what I’m going to wear over it on my way there and back. I don’t leave the house without some subtle makeup that enhances my appearance. I remember that one of the things I thought about after getting a dog was what outfits I would wear dog walking. They had to be functional for the dog park - wellies were an obvious choice for footwear - and still look good enough for weekend shopping and coffee at a local cafe with the dog. Yes, I went shopping with the dog when I lived in Vancouver. I’m not European. It’s just the way I was brought up to dress. I’ve recently been watching videos of people walking downtown in the city of Montreal, where I currently live. It had me cringing, that is until I saw videos of Toronto where people dress even worse.

living in New York I remember when going to the office was in a suit and ladies had to wear pantyhose. Than came casual Friday during the Summer since people were leaving to their beach houses right after work. Now casual Friday is decent and in New York is black, on black on black all year round. :(((((, so when you see glamour street wear from NY those are fashionistas. Regular people are constantly in rush, no style only black even during the Summer. I love colors, whole black may be elegant but not everyday. thanks to this channel I am refreshing on a style, on shopping your closet. As my husband mentioned - for a whole month I hadn't repeat a clothes. ( and I didn't buy anything I just style them with more thoughts, with more inspirations, looking at pictures and with time and practice it is getting easier). Thank you Alyssa, you are so creative anything is great. Maybe "shop your closet " of an European lady, or maybe European lady come to your place and she dress you using your clothes and her style - that will be great.

Loved this video. A lady from Latvia came to visit for a while and I couldn’t help but notice how classy she looked in casual, yet classy clothing. I used to dress this way when a young child to church and school and kept the grubbies for play. Perhaps we could learn a good lesson from Europeans and ourselves from our youth. I am 70. What a refreshing video. Anxious to see what else you can tempt us with!!!

This styling hacks have been around forever in Balkans ( Former Yugoslavia) They always dressed up nice - sophisticated. Hanging blazer on top, not fully wearing it I haven’t seen anywhere else besides Balkan countries not only Croatia. So yeah being from there I’m honestly surprised that you never came across these styling hacks

When I was visiting my relatives in the US, the recurring comment whenever we went out during the day was that I was overly dressed (I would wear leggings, trainers and a tunic, everybody else shorts and a t-shirt). (The "c" in "špica" is pronounced as "ts" in "tsunami")

Like this perspective! People do dress up more in Europe, to go for coffee or shopping. I love that. When I retired, I made sure to not hang out in slob clothes. When we wear sweats and T-shirts or hoodies all the time or those dreadful flannel pj bottoms, it sends a message…..Making an effort to perk yourself up a bit does good things for your whole outlook!

That's true, in Mexico we dress up everyday and when I moved to North Germany I always got comments like uhh were are you going, why are you dressing up... The blazer as a cape is my best styling tip. If you're indoors but want to keep your coat on, either because it's too cold or you don't have anywhere to hang the coat or if you just feel more comfortable with it on, wear it as a cape; very stylish.

Beautiful location! I wonder if some of the differences in fashion are because European towns and cities were built before cars were the dominant mode of travel. In America, there aren’t walkable neighborhoods unless you live in a place like NYC. People jump from their car to run in for coffee and immediately rush out to drive to their next appointment. Instead of walking throughout the day, we take fitness classes or jog or bike, hence athleisure. For example, unlike Amsterdam where everyone bikes to get around, mountain or road biking in America is for fitness-the bike designs are not as practical for commuters/wearing normal clothes/carrying bags and are much more expensive.

The sweater on the shoulders brought back memories! I grew up in Italy and grandma always told me to bring a "golfino" in case it gets chilly.. This is in July with 35° 😂 definitely enjoyed this video, you expressed the 'philosophy' behind Bella figura very well. I think Italians can be dressed casually (like jeans and tshirt) but it's always put together, ironed, good fit, etc. And comfortable!

Love, love love this! The concept of putting your best self forward everywhere you go is such a mood lifting, life affirming perspective! It’s such a bummer to go a local grocery store or coffee shop and see patrons who look like they literally just rolled out of bed. A really inspiring video with some great fashion lessons! As Greek I would definitely agree about be always as well dressed as you can be even if you drink an afternoon coffee with a good friend and I have also to agree about the great shoes, bag and sunnies that can make or break an outfit. Last but not least, the blazer on the shoulders is a must! It's practical as you said about the weather conditions that you can face through the day and it has a really effortless and classy effect.😉
