The trust your horses have is amazing, having those noisy clippers so close to their ears, and they hardly move at all. Also I love your care about your horses welfare. ❤

Jim, My wife always listens to your shows, and all of a sudden I heard the word horseshoe come up, and I glanced at the screen and listened to your input on the cork shoes. You are totally on the right track and as you can tell, the lighter shoes stay on longer. Lighter is better. The heel cork thing, I sort of knew what you were going to say about them not sinking into the ground. Good observation! The one piece of advice that I could give you horse loggers, or draft horse farmers or pullers is about the length of the shoe. Remember, the longer the heel, the more it can become a lever, which inevitably breaks down the heels. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work. BTW, I've been a farrier for 53 years. Best wishes.

You need a full built-in ledge to stand on, or have the horse stand in a ditch of some kind. Either way you would then be taller then the horse.

Feed in, muck out. Feed in, muck out. Feed in, muck out. Repeat. A horseman's rhythm of life, if you want your horses handy close by. Of course they could live out 24/7, then you gotta go fetch what you want, while carting feed up the paddock. This way Jim knows exactly how much hay and grain they are getting. This is the old way. And it is all paying for itself, the horses doing all the cultivating and planting. Anyway, horse manure is a nice smell.
@marionberry69092 күн бұрын
I have been wondering about the same thing, about myself, (I suppose that I’m ok????????????) Sometimes I just sit in the barn and listen to the horses eating, it’s just a relaxing sound.

The horseshoe commentary was really interesting. I have no experience with pulling horses, but with riding and jumping horses, we used to use a special shoe where we could switch out heel "knubs" as needed depending on the riding surface. I'm not sure what type of shoe it's called or if it's even relevant to pulling horses, but it was nice we could change to flat when we didn't need the extra traction

I didn't know drafts heels don't grow so fast.! Thnx for explaining abt the slight flare that's at the bottom of her hoof. . Idk.! Retiring a horse. That would be a good topic for you to cover some time.. You've clearly given it a gd bit of thot. Thanx for share some time w yall. Cheers! ❤❤

I have a stool for clipping horses suggestion.... get a thick log, cut steps & fasten rubber on them drill through opposite bottom side for an axel put on appropriate wheels that only touch ground when tipped. Attach handles. The worst is they may break handles. Especially if you carve indentation for wheels to fit into. Just make sure wheels qre off ground when stump steps are set to use for step stool.

Going way back to when I first got my own team I had a farrier, himself a logger, who was using those pulling shoes with a turned down heel and no toe clip. Worked fine for me. I'd build them up with weld as needed. Eventually I got doing my own shoeing to save some money and shifted over to Kerckhart's. I use a #6 Draft, 1/2 inch thick with a toe clip. I have one team caulked with screw-in studs that I really detest but I keep building them up with borium. The other team has drilltek toe and heel and I really like the way they bite. This is the first year trying the drilltek stuff. I have a big box of borium rod so that is what I'll use once the drilltek wears down. A friend picked these up for me at a horse sale in the States last year and they already had the stuff welded on. I like a toe clip. I posted a video awhile back about my shoeing. It ain't pretty but they stay on and do the job and don't have to pay an over priced scam artist saddle horse farrier who doesn't even have the right nails on his truck.

Jim I agree with you on the shoes and that is why I went to the flat shoes. I seen on hard roads and ice the horses had to stand as if they were in high heals and I did not like it . I also found that the flat shoes stayed on better . I do have a LOT of drill tec on the toes and heals and I always run a good snow pad so every time the foot is clean so the drill tec gets to the ground. I do thing the single healed calks with good drill tec does grip better , especially in soft muddy conditions but with the way the flat one stay on it is worth it to me and the over all to go flat. Also it is so much easier to get flat shoes for my Fjords . Another great video pal, love to watch them but I am so behind on them now LOL.. I have been hammering out the red pine this winter again and this new team of Fjord is getting tough . I call them Snow Mules ;) .. be safe out there .

Ken did so well that’s interesting. What a sweetheart. Sometimes we show our horses, the clippers without them being turned on and rub them on them a bit to familiarize them. I’m sure you’ve done that too.

I had quarter horses for 20 years in northeast Ohio and watch most of your videos. I picked the hooves everyday to prevent any problems like thrush. I am surprised that you don,t use more sawdust bedding in the stalls especially the ones where the horses have the logging cleats on there shoes which makes them elevated on the back of there hoof. More bedding would allow the cleats to bury in the sawdust and the hoof to stand to lay flat or level. Not sure it's good for the horse to stand for long periods of time with the heel elevated, not natural position for a horse. I am retired now living in Florida miss taking of the horses . Enjoy your videos

As to the difficulty of horses not growing heels; the heels do grow!! But the heels also wear away every time the hoof lands. You can verify this by inspecting the heel wear on a shoe when it is first taken off. The heels of the shoe will have been rubbed bright. There may even be a grove in the steel - worn-in by the hoof itself. Whereas the hoof is designed to flex open and closed at the heels, the toe does not flex, and, therefore, the toe cannot be worn away.
