NOTE FROM TED: Research around COVID-19 remains an ongoing and evolving field of study. This talk was delivered March 20, 2021. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
Like millions of people around the world, epidemiologist Dr. Margot Gage Witvliet got COVID-19 in March 2020 & began to document her recovery. The only thing is, she never got better. In this jaw-dropping talk, Margot explains what doctors & nurses can learn from long COVID patients ("long-haulers”) now & for the future. Margot Gage Witvliet is an epidemiology professor with Chronic COVID Syndrome, also called “Long-Haul COVID”. She has a Bachelor’s in Psychology, a Master’s in Health Psychology, and a Doctorate in Social Epidemiology & Public Health. She currently teaches at Lamar University. She was awarded special recognition by Congressman Joaquin Castro for the advancement of social justice. She is bilingual and speaks Dutch at home with her husband & children. During her convalescent period from COVID-19, she created & published a coloring book for mighty girls with her daughters. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I'm going to tell you two of my experiences. I almost bled to death when I was little, but a female doctor who was a graduate from Yale saved my life. My male doctor almost misdiagnosed me with leukemia, but my female doctor gave me a diagnosis of ITP. She saved my life. My sister went to a doctor from that same clinic and he almost diagnosed her for a rare disorder that makes your skull collapse. We got a second opinion and she has a severe sinus infection where she could've became blind. Through these experiences I have reflected that you need to research your doctors and make sure they are the competent type.

I got a dose of "something" (1/20) while at a hospital for a 2 day procedure re: something else, After 10 days I called back in terrible pain (it think it was the GI form of covid lorgterm) and instead of any compassion or recognition or diagnosis they called the POLICE on me, Never got an explanation. No care for the 5 months I was ill. The police were called to shut me up. Why the censorship? Where was the medical system when I needed them? The original doctor on the original med team (hip replacement) said it wasn't his "department" when I asked who was accountable for what happened. But whose was it? And why was I treated this way? Its as if I am not supposed to know. But I got it from that place. Never heard another story quite like mine, meaning... wtf?

I have RA (also an autoimmune disease) and boy was it a struggle to finally get a doctor to listen to me like I wasn't crazy about the pain and fatigue I was feeling. There is no test for RA that's a guarantee like many illnesses. Having the diagnosis and finding others like me didn't take away the physical pain, but it was a measurable improvement to my happiness. To have a doctor acknowledge my pain as real, was one of the most gratifying moments in my life. Finding people like me who have been working on feeling better was a game changer. They gave me better advice than any doctor ever has. I second the other poster on diet. What I eat really does have a big impact. I kept a food journal and the patterns where clear to be seen. I still have flare ups, but they are endurable now that I understand the nature of my illness and that the pain isn't a sign of something slowly killing me or something.

Sunlight and led light causes seizures and strokes and shuts down my ability to process information or move my limbs at times. I’ve had to live in darkness alone for 7 years straight now. That’s the only answer they can give me. Stay inside and away from light. Forever. I spent my entire life exploring the mountains and the desert. I was studying science. I can barely walk half the time or remember anything anymore. I’m a mother of 4 and grandma of 2. I’m 40. My mother and daughter are also sick but not allergic to light. Lupus patients are most like me but I still don’t fit in that category either. Ms was suggested but again the light is such a trigger they don’t really know. I have been left to just die in darkness. I’m called a vampire and told to move to a dark hole or to Alaska. It’s quite humiliating and very painful. Diet helps a lot but not enough. I don’t eat much because my body can’t process a lot of nutrients before my kidneys or liver shuts down. Medicine trials have almost killed me more times than I can count. For the first 10 years it wasn’t as bad. I would just get tired and a rash. It slowly took my life away. That’s my story anyway. Sorry about the long post.

Thank you for sharing your story and not giving up. 14 years ago my husband became very ill. I swear he had Lyme disease and the Doctors kept telling us that there’s no Lyme disease in Canada. He also took a test and it came back negative. 2 years later he went missing for four days. January 28/2009, the police found him in a field almost a mile away from his vehicle and three hours away from where we lived. He was tired of the specialists not believing him and ended up taking his own life at the age of 50 leaving me a widow at 40 years old with two boys to raise on my own. This isn’t about COVID 19 but I know how it feels to not be heard. 😢

She was sick herself she could do nothing but pray. God heard her, He humbled her husband and brought him to Himself, saved his soul then saved his physical life. He slowly got better after that. She did too, altho she has flare ups. They had spent all their savings trying not to die from Lyme- over $100,000. They were homeless by the end of it but they were alive. My God, he was so young. No person should ever be made to feel that way by "professionals" who have taken an oath to do no harm. Doctors practice medicine, always practicing, it's always evolving, & none of them have "arrived" or have all the answers. But some of their egos are so damn big that instead of admitting that they don't have the answers you need they just tell you it's all in your head. And that can be more harmful than the actual illness you suffer from. I've had my share of poor experiences with doctors. This is going down in my book as 1 of the greatest TEDx Talks ever. I got sick about 5 years ago, but it wasn't COVID related. The doctors couldn't figure it out and tried to convince me it was psychosomatic. The only compassion or help I received was mostly from female doctors. The males were completely uninterested in "figuring it out" and treated me like I was a child just like her. I noticed obvious things in my lab-work and procedure reports the doctors had missed, almost as if they weren't looking. It was as if I had to figure it out myself. The problem was I was in no mental condition to do so. To be so intelligent and respected and overachieving, only to then be belittled by the doctors, was a humiliating experience I never want to go through again. I'm left now with chronic fatigue and am just a shadow of who I use to be. Something has to change. There are waay too many of us out here.

Which area does it affect; we have 11 systems, cardio, circulatory, integumentary, skeletal, etc. Try to retrieve you medical history information before you were sick and compare it to after you were sick. Talk to blood related family members to see if their is a family history on either side. Bottom line you have to do alot of homework. Check your diet. Keep a daily journal. Do you need to upgrade your health insurance. What is or was your occupation and does it have a health risk factor. Alot of the work will fall to you.

Nurses are almost always better at this than doctors! I’ve suffered from chronic illness, and pain from an injury, for years. Doctors told me I didn’t have endometriosis until my uterus and abdomen were too full of adhesions to remove! I was told I had “no injury” to my neck and, after 20 years, I got new imaging and found my top rib had been lodged under my collarbone, the whole time. I had it put back in place, and have not had that pain again, but my shoulders are full of debilitating dystonia from being stuck that way for so long. I was told I didn’t have multiple bladder infections and yeast infections that were always improved by antibiotics and Diflucan. I didn’t test positive about 3/4 of the time, but it’s extremely obvious when you have a yeast infection, and all STD tests were negative, too. All the while, nurses have just helped me and done what worked, clinically, including treating me for Osteomyelitis diligently for months, before it was confirmed by biopsy. Yes, a doctor grudgingly signed the order, but nurses really listened and did what it took, until I felt OK. Same with my ehrlichiosis, when my Nurse Practitioner kept on testing, after doctors dismissed me for suspecting Lyme disease that didn’t show up (ehrlichiosis is also a tick-borne illness, with similar symptoms). I owe my life, and my quality of life, to nurses. Thank you for what you do!

I’m so glad I ran into your video. I tested positive for covid on December 16, 2021, which triggered my asthma. I ended up in the ER on January 1, 2020 as my chest began tightening so much that I could hardly take a breath in. I praise God for the shift of doctors that were working when I arrived at 2am at Newton Wellesley Hospital in Massachusetts! My doctor was very thorough and explained everything, even without me asking. He did so many test on me that I was surprised. I made sure to stare at his name tag several times so that I could reference him later. Thank God for His guidance in doing so. Because the shift of doctors that came on around 7 am that morning, were the opposite and the doctor I had on that 2nd shift, wanted to send me home; even after I answered with much doubt about doing so. Then I remember Russell, the first doctor. I began referencing him and stating what he told me and how he didn’t want me to leave until my heart rate had returned to normal. All of a sudden, “okay, Ms Landrum, we won’t send you home until you are comfortable”. From your talk, I can clearly see how this particular doctor didn’t want to admit that he was wrong for trying to get me up out of there. The simple statement, “ Well Russel said…”, which I said as often as I had to, made the difference and caused the other doctors to stand at attention and listen.

I can't begin to imagine the ordeal you've gone through in the name of compromised ethos, intergrity of such a noble profession as Medicine.. Attitude is also important when treating patients and to assist them in making informed decisions. Unfortunately most doctors fail to communicate effectively with patients attributing this to a feeling that we have little information and it does not seem to bother explaining diagnostic procedures and medical impacts on patient's health. So frustrating but hey I admire your resilience. Well done!!

She'd had a covid vaccine & within 2 weeks had developed blood clots in her lungs & other places. Correlation doesn't equal causation but we all suspect the vaccine just wasn't a good move for her. Anyways, she died within a week at only 65, very active & youthful. It was devastating. I did not have Covid and hopefully I never will. I had a flu shot and after my 12 hour shift I went to our emergency department regarding symptoms. Immediately I was told it was not the flu shot. I told our Occupational nurse what had happened and her comments were similar. Neither one of them had an open mind and said it’s not the shot. They treated me similar to your experience. I am not below them and I know my body. I am a person that was affected by a flu shot and hoped for answers and help. I looked up online and found others who had the same situation as me. It did not change things but it comforted me to know I was not alone. It’s a month and a half later and my hip is not any better except the burning down the leg and hip is gone. Walking any stairs is challenging as it was not before. I am grateful that I did not have to go through your extremely difficult situation.

I actually got excited ( for a few seconds) when hearing your story. I too have been experiencing S/S of full body illness from December 2020 and after changing PCP two times and multiple tests I’ve been told their is nothing wrong with you. The last 3 visits ended with “ are you seeing a therapist?” Makes me want to scream!!!!! You literally can SEE some of my symptoms. For now I’m going through a process of elimination with tests, and a year plus has passed. I also went to the ER one time thinking I had a heart attack. It’s hard to not give up sometimes ( and no, no self harm). I’ve learned patience , documentation and perseverance 🕊

@@maegary8107 that is so fundamental and beautiful and also truth full , now we have to implement a d put to use that Doctors are not all seeing and truthful about their knowledge. We have put the price too high and need to get more options before we take drastic steps about our bodies, we might implement a law that we need three opinions before we go to for an operation. It might be clumsy but it will be informative. That can come under the heading of information seeking. We do that before we buy a car, we look under the hood. We also implement information seeking when we buy a dress or suit we may go from store to store, why don’t we do that with our precious bodies. The process of “finding out” holds first priority.

This is an all to true fact but saying that also makes me question empathy of medical physicians for one. Most people don't grow up with the intensity to want to be a person who is a drug addict. In fact i never heard anyone or read anywhere the longing to be an addict. I believe all types ,professionals, races, ages, can become addicted, but does that mean they should suffer from other illnesses? Did it ever occur to the morality judges that maybe this or that person 's addiction started because of great pain. I am not attacking anyone personally what i am trying to get at is yes i understand some people will want drugs from doctors but all people get sick and we have no right to judge. We always have the right to be skeptical but never to be cruel. I am afraid but there are so many cruel physician's out there that are causing great harm and deep sadness making some to doctor themselves and self medicate.

Going to say I don’t necessarily think this is due to them being a doctor. It’s a general lack of men and women believing fellow women. Men don’t go to doctors so when they present their bodies are compost whacked up. But women do tend to go at the unset. But then doctors think we are crazy. This also applies to a work world. Women say an opinion and are expected to prove without a shadow of a doubt that it is right. A man does not.

I dare not cook when I’m home alone bc I’ve once had near fateful situation, etc. The last total unconscious episode being May 25 & I was home alone. I feel so damn silly trying to explain to my cardiologist what’s actually happening.

Same boat. Still ignored, suffered for almost a year, Mid March 2020-to Jan 2021. As an athlete and meditator, I am fairly attuned to my body and what is going on with it. I use it with focus every single day, paying attention to little shifts in its function to keep from getting injured and to insure my speeds increase and my oxygen uptake stay tuned up. If my doctor would have listened to me with all his years of knowledge about me, he could have given me at least a glimmer of compassion and hope. Thanks for speaking out and up.

I agree that there's more discrimination amongst patients of color, if that's the discrimination you're referring to. However, being dismissed and disbelieved multiple times as a white colored, I tell you the issue is deeper that that. It's the medical system. Many of the doctors these days went to med school for money and status. They simply don't care.

This story should be broadcasted live everywhere!!!! My story is very similar to this doctor. I am continuing to experience symptoms of COVID weeks after my initial diagnosis. I push myself through the day hoping against hope I will feel better... I am still waiting for the positive results to manifest! I truly hope frontline caretakers will show more concern and consideration to the patients in their care. It's the ethical thing to do. Thank you for telling your needed story.

Best TED talk! I say this after being fired from my doctor for speaking up and advocating for my elderly husband's care when a nurse allowed a life saving prescription to go days with no call in. The medical community must do better for all patients with all diseases. Thank you for bringing attention to this matter with your personal story.

My daughter had the same experience. She’s 23, healthy, a college graduate, drug free, and really big into nutrition and exercise. After Covid, many times she was unable to walk or talk on the phone with a range of 52 symptoms. It’s been a year since she got sick and finally a neurologist started to get the diagnosis right. Thank you for doing this video and spreading the word.

Very well said. My Doctors all said the same thing “It’s anxiety” even tho I tried telling all of them it was not, they were trying to convince me that I’m stressed and it’s just anxiety. Until I stopped going back to them and started doing my own research, looking for holistic paths, just anyone that would listen and try to help me, spent THOUSANDS of dollars and still nothing helped. It’s just really sad that the Doctors would not listen, they try to make you feel like you don’t know what you’re saying without actually taking the time to listen to their patients .

I just came across this. God bless you for telling your story. I also contracted covid April 2021. I am still hobbling around with pain. Prior, I was riding bike and feeling great with no pain. I pray for everyone dealing with long term illness. Your statement on many professionals not wanting to admit they don't know is so true. We don't mind hearing you don't know. We don't either. We just need your reassurance that we are not imagining our anguish. Again, thank you for understanding and putting this video out there. EVERY heathcare employee should be mandated to view this annually with required training. God bless you 🙏.
