@@namegoeshereorhere5020 I wholeheartedly partially agree ;-) In the NA system lights are easily visible. The European system can be a pain for drivers of certain vehicles. Imagine the light is very close to the driver, in the shade of the car's roof. Happens most often to tall drivers who move the seat all the way back. The NA system doesn't lend itself so well to some very complex and weird crossings which in Europe we have plenty of. (For fun, lookup "magic roundabout" in the UK. It's complex but I think there no traffic lights.) Either system is a problem when after a 10h+ flight a drivers steps into a car on the other side of the ocean started a jetlagged drive forgetting things are different now.

I did that, briefly, on my second ever drive in traffic (age 15). The driving instructor assured me the red light did not apply to me and to keep going. In the next block there was a road work sign and a row of cones. I managed to knock them all down. After day two, I calmed down and actually learned to drive. That driving instructor was a combat vet with such a quiet way about him, but nerves of steel. Thanks to him I’ve been driving for 65 years, across the country, back and forth to Alaska, through blizzards, major cities from New York to Los Angeles, and never ticketed for traffic violations and never a serious accident.

As many have said, the driver is probably a tourist from Europe where traffic lights are located before the intersection, not after. We have another oddity here in Montreal. Intersections have normal traffic lights, but then some also have STOP sign at the front of the insection. So, if a light is red, you stop like in a normal red light traffic situation. But, when the light is green, do you still stop, because there is a STOP sign there? Hmmm...!
@lolookie16822 ай бұрын
In my country, it's a common practice that intersections with traffic lights also have stop signs and other similar non-changing signs. If the traffic lights are on, you follow the lights and ignore the signs completely, and if the lights are off, you follow the signs as if the traffic lights were not there at all. It's because on some intersections, the traffic is so low at night that there is no point for the traffic lights to be active, so they just turn them off in the evening and turn them back on in the morning. Or it's just a security measure in case of a malfunction.
@apscoradiales2 ай бұрын
@@lolookie1682 Which country is that? Like I said, we have that in some intersections in Quebec too. Traffic light AND a Stop sign, which in my opinion is utterly ridiculous. A Stop sign means, you STOP no matter what, even if you have a green light or a purple light or any light. Stop means STOP! So what do you do if you have a green light, and then there is a Stop sign there as well? Do you stop or do you drive through? It's totally stupid, in my opinion. Now, what you do if the lights are malfunctions or not working? Our rules, say, you must stop, and proceed on the first-come-first-served basis. This is what we do in Ontario, Quebec, and many other places, INSPITE of the fact that, like I said before some intersections in Montreal havee a Stop sign as well as a traffic light.
@lolookie16822 ай бұрын
@@apscoradiales It's the Czech Republic. And here, we don't have any first-come-first-served rule at intersections - the flow of traffic is regulated by traffic signs or traffic lights instead. One direction (usually the one with higher amount of traffic) is marked with a “main road” sign, which tells you that you have the right of way, and the others are marked with “give way” signs or stop signs, which tells you that you have to give way to the cars on the main road (and you have to also give way to the cars from the opposite direction if you want to turn left, no matter whether you are on the main road or the give-way road). That's the reason there are always signs alongside traffic lights - all intersections must have at least one of them, and the signs are there in case the lights don't work. The only exceptions are some intersections with very low amount of traffic in suburban areas, where there are no signs nor lights and everybody just gives way to the cars on their right and of course to the cars from the opposite direction if they want to turn left.
@apscoradiales2 ай бұрын
@@lolookie1682 I'm familiar withe the "priority road". I lived in Croatia, and driven across Europe a lot, so I know how the system works there. I wish we had some of that in Montreal. We have millions of four way stop signs, and no priority roads, even if some roads look more important and carry more traffic than the roads intersectiong it. So when you have a four way stop sign, then over here it's first-come-first-served. And, like I said sometimes we have semaphores AND stop signs at the samee time. It's dumb!

Probably a tourist in a rental. In most countries you stop when you see red traffic lights, because they tend to be on the side of the intersection you are supposed to stop on. This person was probably confused why the traffic light was across the intersection.

Pretty sure you’re supposed to pull into the bike lane just before turning right so you don’t cross in front of a biker from the car lane and potentially cause an accident.

It happens. I've almost done this before. Driving is mentally taxing and our infrastructure can be confusing. Let's make transportation better for all and diversify out means of getting around
@choonblaze3 ай бұрын
Only possible if there was 2 billion people living in USA so the density would be like Europe then you could build proper infrastracture for pedestrians. Right now it's a deserted place like Australia so cars are a must. People who enjoy a more organic lifestyle live in Europe without any cars.
@ccederlo3 ай бұрын
@@choonblaze lol, what? What reason does the population have to increase substantially in order to increase density? Plus, many cities have the potential already. The problem is our obsession with cars for anything and everything. However, I acknowledge changing the culture and will of the USA is not likely to happen.
@choonblaze3 ай бұрын
@@ccederlo it's literally the definition of population density lol. European countries have way too many people per sq mile. USA has huge landmass but not many people to fill the density. Only NYC comes close to a proper European city but still falls short.
@choonblaze3 ай бұрын
@@ccederlo it's not just an obsession but a necessity since the country is so poorly designed. People grow up in cars, not having a clue what real organic life even looks like other than what they see on european tv shows and such. Needing a car to go grocery shopping or to a restaurant is an alien concept to me. US certainly is an oddball in that sense.

Yeah that was a baffling decision. But I wanted to mention that at least in my area you're supposed to merge into the bike lane when turning right, you just have to yield to a bicyclist if there is one. It actually annoys me when people don't do that on the faster roads because it just slows everyone behind them down for no reason.

@thomasformanek465 Or, they're a tourist from another country. According to another commenter in this comment section, @globalautobahn1132, in some parts of the world, like in Germany and other European countries, red lights are at the fronts of intersections, so the driver might have gotten confused due to this being a 5-point intersection.

I've actually done this in a particulaly confusing intersection. The red light was so far away and it was a 6-point intersection so it kinda looked like I needed to stop. A few months later I saw someone else do the same exact thing at the same intersection and I had to wave them through

I've seen this before, many years ago at Torrance on 190th and Hawthorne. Woman was going through the intersection, but she stopped right in the intersection as the light turned red. Her car smack dab in the middle of the intersection causing all sorts of havoc. As a passanger I took a glance at her as we pass and I see she's entirely unfazed about the chaos she's causing. She was just looking straight on like nothing was happening. Like she didn't know she was supposed to continue through the intersection and get out of the way.

Please don’t be so judgemental. The driver could have been a newly licensed kid who is still building their confidence and clarity about the rules of the road. This could also be a visitor from another country who was erroneously following ::their:: rules of the road back home. It’s easy enough to do. When we were in Scotland, we made plenty of mistakes on their roads. I dislike your attitude toward this person.

For those of you that don't realize it, not all states allow you to complete a turn through a red light. People use the left turn lane wrong all the time, and if you turn right on a red light you are supposed to get into the closest lane, not the furthest.

I saw something similar several years ago. There is a set of traffic lights at the entrance to a local shopping centre. Right at that intersection the road passing in front of the shopping centre splits into two parts. The right side is the local street, and the left side is an entrance to a highway. When traffic exiting the shopping centre gets a green light, the light for the local street turns red. But the light for the highway entrance stays green since that traffic doesn't interfere with the traffic exiting the shopping centre. I once saw a car stop at the highway entrance although he had a green light. Apparently he just saw the red light for the local street and thought he had to stop. A car coming up behind him had to stop suddenly to avoid running into him and then blared his horn at the stopped driver, who then must have noticed he actually had a green light and so he then drove through the intersection.
