The workers are just as rational and self aware as you are. Neither Stellantis nor the union are acting in their own best long-term interests. The problem is Stellantis is supposed to have hired people in leadership who are compensated at a level where they supposed to know better. The dealers also knew they were taking a calculated risk with the pricing strategy they took. Being left holding the bag is largely on them.
@bobwallace9753Ай бұрын
Workers can't save a company that makes terrible decisions. Leadership chose to ignore the transition to EVs. The China market is just about gone for Western ICEVs and that is where many western legacy companies were making a lot of their profits. We can build a wall around the US to keep out affordable Chinese EVs, but the US market is too small, overall, to let GM and Ford cover their debts. Stellantis looks to be fleeing to Europe where they will die.

@@MH44444 I was in the car business for 30 odd years. Automakers dumped the cars that didn't sell in high enough volume. Just like manual transmissions have disappeared in modern auto manufacturing. Auto manufacturers would love to build cheap cars they could sell in high volume. The problem behind all that is US requirements make it cost prohibitive. I would gladly buy a car without airbags, all the computer BS, without traction control and all the other crap but the problem is primarily the laws and regulations won't allow it and secondly the first time someone gets banged up in a car without airbags and they sue the manufacturer because they built a car for people that didn't want to pay for extra safety crap the party is over. Sadly the only place that gives consumers free choice in vehicles is the motorcycle industry. You can get a fuel injected bike or not. You can get an ABS equipped bike or not. Freedom is scary but government mandated regulations and tort law is safe for those who would never take responsibility for their own actions.

Layoffs are like hurricanes - losses versus survivors generates fear from the laid off versus guilt from the still employed. Friends and families will be torn apart as neighborhoods are peppered with the well fed still employed and the starving laid off families. The big hint - when the employee parking lot is filling up with vehicles the workers just built. 1933 Ford laid off half their workers who then RIOTED and attacked mangers and assembly lines. Many on both sides were killed.

This is like the car glut of around 2005 or abouts. Too many global car manufacturers around the world had too much production capacity. Even with a larger global population increase and if more people global buy cars, due to efficiency, scaling up and productivity there is too much car production capacity. And due to the 2008 Global Financial Meltdown most Western governments introduced Cash For Clunkers in order to (1) save auto worker jobs and (2) remove older polluting vehicles. At this point, the world is heading into another round of global auto manufacturers needing to consolidate and reduce production volume.

New car purchasing peaked a few years back. In the last few years new companies have entered the market, making millions of EVs that people are buying. Think about the ICEV business as a game of musical chairs. Chairs keep getting removed, someone ends up falling on their butt. But what is different about ICEV musical chairs is that there will be zero chairs because the supply chain will collapse over time.

Ray, do you KNOW HOW a PRODUCTION LINE WORKS? The Industrial Engineers who design these things treat the employees like ROBOTS. When you're JUST a cog in a machine, YOU turning faster just F**KS UP THE MACHINERY. If you want the thing to go FASTER, it (pretty much) HAS to be the WHOLE THING. And generally, if you want THAT, you have to REDESIGN the whole thing. (What TESLA did). The best 40-year-experienced airplane engineer isn't gonna be all that helpful if you start building HELICOPTERS. WHAT, they BOTH fly, right? The best 40-year-experienced ICE engineer is great at solving problems that DON'T exist in an EV. And you can only do so much with kaizen.
