Hung out in west clear creek in the late 1970s, starting down the road from strawberry and hiking to camp Verde. Found a million caves and box canyons, natural springs and unique humming birds that start at the tops of the tallest pines then dive straight down the trunks and straight back up over and over. And hieroglyphics in numbers beyond count. Thousands of trips. And it was one of Arizonas best kept secrets.

Fun to see that creek again. Went in twice 1974 and 76 while at NAU. Caught a 25” brown and won a Ruff’s contest. 2nd trip sprained an ankle in the box canyon playing frisbee. Had to pack out days later, using t-shirts and sticks to splint it. Nasty hike out. On crutches for two weeks…can empathize 👍

Thanks for sharing! The best thing about the desert is an oasis and Arizona has plenty of these outta the way places that are rarely seen by humans. It’s fortunate that there’s no highway to this spot and it’s not designated or identified on a map. These are hidden gems and sacred places that should be kept secret so the masses don’t ruin them, I know many of them here in Arizona.

In the 1989 I hiked from the old cable line near the top of CC, and down to Bull Pen over 5 days and 4 nights. I floated/swam through all of the boxes and found that the most difficult aspect was finding a flat, sleeping bag-sized spot for my night's rest. Yes, there are so many beautiful sand bars along the way, beckoning intrepid hikers to smooth out an area for their traps and bags. Problem is, if you notice the large, axe-like rock shards embedded in the sand bars along the creek, some the size of television sets (Baby Boomer mention....TVs ??), and once you look up and see how all the cliffs and slopes eject their detritus downward to the lovely beaches, you might want to find spots tucked up against the shrubby, woody cliffs. I hiked there in August and on several nights heard thunder rumbling up canyon and saw prolific Monsoon lightning flashes every 30 seconds. Yeah, I might have over-corrected when I thought about the summer heat without any clouds or rain and chose August instead of May or October. My bad, however I learned a valuable Clear Creek survival method. On my first day in I met 3 German guys who had come in from a steep canyon wash from the southern edge. They were below, several miles from the old cable line where I had initially hiked in early that day, and had day packs!! I asked them where they were headed and they said "Bull Pen Ranch" at the bottom of CC. They mentioned that it was only 9-11 miles and they had plenty of time if they hiked 3 miles per hour, a basically sad German hiking speed, that they felt that they could easily surpass. When I told them that they would have to swim through several "boxes", wall-to-wall slot section where you'll notice tree trunks jammed between the slot cliffs roughly 30 feet above the creek's surface, they just looked surprised and left in a hurry. I hope they found that they needed to climb out almost immediately and hike back to their car in daylight and not get caught in the dark. Clear Creek, and many of the other dozens of Mogollon Rim drainage/side canyons have been invaded heavily with the unprepared. Recent stats show at least one helicopter rescue per month, or so I'm told. At Wet Beaver Creek, 15 miles east of Sedona, just a few miles east of I-17, the folks at the Coconino National Forest told my friend that in 2021, 1,000 people per summer weekend were hiking in to swim and party by............WATER. As Arizona grows with 1,000s of newly-deposited "outdoors folks", water becomes their sole agenda when it gets hot and they want to get out of Phoenix and so head north to water canyons like Oak Creek, Sycamore Creek, West Clear Creek, East Clear Creek, Fossil Creek, and Tonto Creek. Injured human rescues multiply, peace and quiet dissolves..... My sacred canyons cost much more to visit. 3 hour hikes from the nearest dirt road, 1,600 foot vertical drops through brushy, basalt side canyons, and plenty of snakes and bears. Love it. Never gonna see you there fer shure.

@@wesmann65Yes and there are lots of “secret” locations like this closer to your home. That is the point… No one takes the time to explore anymore… What is gratifying to you about a supposed adventure that is completely mapped out for you by someone else who actually had the adventure? What is fun about exploring nature and the wild if a bunch of other people are already there packing it to the brim? Just because you see something doesn’t mean you NEED to go there yourself. Spend more time out exploring and less time on watching others. This was searched for by me and added to a playlist for my 81 year old father with Parkinson’s, who wishes he still had the ability to get get out there and truly explore but from now on can only dream and watch videos. He moved to live with me in Arizona and for now my exploring is on hold to take care of him… He never lived in Arizona until now so we watch all the videos of this state to see what we would have done if he was younger and he filled my childhood with real exploring. He tells me all of the time, “find these places for yourself and see them with your own eyes for me when I’m gone.” Go explore your area and have a real adventure.

Everything about this area keeps the crowds away. You definitely need to earn it. If you haven't been, I recommend starting from either end (Willow Creek area or Bullpen Ranch Trailhead), go in as far as you can, then turn around and go out the way you came. After a few trips you can get a better feel for the terrain and go for more adventurous locations. I've been there dozens of times and it still kicks my butt sometimes.

Never tried to access it that way. Always just did long through hike taking several days. Glad you finally got to see that part of the canyon. West Clear Creek is my go to place and has been for 27 years or more. It is a place that must be respected, because it can be very dangerous. Flash floods, exhaustion, hypothermia, injury, and all real possibility in that place. I have a friend that has an amputated leg because of a fall he took in that canyon. I myself went in during monsoon season and saw first hand the danger of flash flood. This canyon is something that only well prepared people should attempt. Glad your ankle was not worse. Thanks for the nice video. You do a great job of making videos. You need to work on your flotation game 😂.

@@JerryArizona I have been using blue foam sleeping pads, two of them doubled over (four layers) strapped to the back of my pack for flotation. Never pops can be used over and over. I just hike with it attached to the back of the pack. When you get to the water you don't have to inflate anything just take your pack off and flip it over and swim. Been using that set up for years.

Well if there is one thing that I know about Jerry is that when he says he ABSOLUTELY does not want to go back... is that he will most definitely come back (albeit far more prepared). I think on the exit the reason why you have petered out is because your adrenalin from being injured more or less wore off and all the energy of keeping you going have been spent getting you that far. This is a very good reminder of how you can be in peak shape, be an avid hiker and still have something silly derail your trip. This being said, you did have ankle injuries in the past so hopefully they do not compound on each other. Catching up on your videos and looking forward other 8 in the queue.

My 1st experience in West Clear Creak Canyon was at what we called the Tram. It was basically a pair of cables extended across the canyon. It was 1968 and I was 7. We packed down into the canyon and set up a base camp. We proceeded to fish all day and when we returned to the base camp that evening, I was soaked to the bone being that I fell into the creak at one point. My father stripped me down and put me in a sleeping bag where I fell asleep. In the morning I had a surprise. Someone had placed my wet shoes on a rock next to the fire and during the night the wind blew my shoes into the fire so I now had no shoes to hike out of the canyon with. All of the men donated a pair of socks if they could spare them and I was able to climb out with not too much discomfort. At that point myself and the other kid in the group, Randy, decided to climb a cedar tree. Randy made it up into the tree and managed to fall out smacking his face on the rocks below. We loaded him up into one of the jeeps and and made our way to the pavement where we flagged down a highway patrolman who was passing and he raced Randy to the nearest hospital. I only went back to West Clear Creek Canyon a few times since. I did although pack East Clear Creek Canyon for nearly 30 years until some idiot burned it all up with an illegal campfire in 2018. Thank you for that, idiot. They never caught the guy.

A lotta, lotta water raced through there, off the plateau above, where Lake Anasazi sat for most of 3,000 years! The canyon was an overflow outlet that bled off water and transported down, through the Mogollon Rim, to the Verde Valley. It's how the water got to Tuzigoot, Montezuma's Castle, and related to what made Walnut Canyon attractive. It was a stunning amount of water, as much as 50 trillion acre-feet, over as long as a thousand years, that poured into the Southwest, from Wyoming, across the Uinta Mountains, at the gap where Nine-Mile Canyon was cut, just like this one, by the same forces: Fast-moving water.

I love West Clear Creek, but that part is one of the parts that tries to kill you! Love that version of Sloop John B. It sounds like someone’s crazy grandparents drank a 6 pack and decided to harmonize “just like old times”. Perfect touch!

I don't know why songs from that group seem to stick in certain videos for me. But somehow it works. (Perfect description of them, btw.)

I have been the whole distance of Clear Creek from the origin above the Tramway to the Bullpen. Do not attempt this unless you have a guide or very detained knowledge of the canyon. During the trip with very experienced backpackers, they all agreed it was many degrees of difficulty above any Grand Canyon hike. It is 31 miles. 5 full days of hiking 15 hours per day. You have to take rafts, because you cannot hike around the pools. Like 37 of them.

That's a good assessment of WCC. I tried the through hike but had to bail after one night. On this trip we saw two other people who were backpacking it. One twisted his ankle about a mile after we passed them. I guess he had to leave his gear and hobble out the next day. His partner reached out to me to see if I knew a good way to get back in and grab the pack.

As a woman, it is very hard to find another woman to do these kind of adventures with! I miss the one lady who was willing. Miss you Stephanie!

What a beautiful place! I was Wowing ever new angle you pointed the camera I swear! This may be my favorite of all your videos, as far as the visuals, and that's certainly saying a lot! But you had such a hard time I really understand why you don't want to go back. Been there before. I am just glad you didn't come back saying, "That's it for me! No more hiking!! We would all certainly miss your videos SO MUCH!

Thanks! But "I'm never going back" is a common saying on my way out of some places. Fortunately (unfortunately?) I get 'hiker's amnesia' and forget the bad parts. I'm sure I'll be back there someday.

Let's see .... about mile marker 243 just east of the high-tension electric wires looks like it could be 142A, 142E or 142F that takes you close to West Clear Creek and some canyon areas. I did see some tanks that would provide water for grazing cattle.

BeaUtiful . Once I jed a group and we went down into west clear creek and wow.. crazy, too risky. We were dropping down a series of dry water falls. Oh and a 300ft long red sandstone with a fifty foot 5 in slot with water in rhe bottom and a huge dead snake in the bottom

You guys made it look easy. Just attempting Maiden Falls a couple of years ago, I can't say I'd be willing to attempt Red Box. It was a pain in the patoot. My pace was so sloooooowwwwww because of all the boulders--and I can see how you could have twisted your ankle. I fell several times into the water even though I consider myself to have good strength and balance. This was lovely to see. Thank you for sharing,

Ha! I failed to mention that I never actually made it to the falls. I got close, but having done it yourself, you know what it means to be close---not close enough. @@JerryArizona
