Yep! The only reason Itachi said to Sasuke that he needs to kill his closest friend is because he obviously doesn’t have any family that he can go after so a friend is the only thing he has. As long as the pain and suffering is big enough, you can unlock the Mangekyo Sharingan. The Uchiha is a clan that gets stronger with hatred and losing important things to them

Just to give small explanation, Steejo m'guy! Itachi lied about the best friend part, what causes the normal Sharingan to awaken is deep emotional trauma. Hence you saw that flashback with Sasuke unlocking it when Itachi told him to run and flee. Same with the fight in Haku; It requires high intense emotional stress to awaken it properly. To awaken the Mangekyo is an EVEN HIGHER level of emotional trauma, like killing your best friend, or in this case, the realization of what Itachi had done all this time and that he had killed him. So it is a retroactive realization he killed his brother, one of his closest loved ones, who always loved him. I know you don't actually read my comments, but I will continue to help inform you! Also you missed it, but when he declared the team name "Taka", he opened his eyes and had his new Sharingan even then you just missed it, like almost every other reactor I have seen xD

Also, he didn't take his brother's eyes, so this is his power. In this episode we could see the first power: Amaterasu, and the second power: turning off the black flames.

Ochi was inside of Sasuke. He was the closest to Sasuke. Itachi pushed Sasuke to the point he didn’t have any chakra so Ochi would be able to come out. He removed Ochi from him and hence he lost his closest person to him. It was a little bit of a trick that worked out. That’s what awakened his new ocular powers.

What itachi said about how sasuke can only get the sharingan by killing his best friend that isn't entirely true, the way to gain the mangekyo is from intense emotional trauma, which sasuke definitely has after he found out the truth regarding itachi and the line about killing you're best friend is simply how itachi supposedly obtained it because regardless of the reasons for it, killing you're best friend has got have some very emotional and psychological baggage to it.

An Uchiha has first stage Sharingan, in order to get the second stage which is Mangekyo Sharingan one must kill or experience the loss of a loved one (family member or close friend) in doing so receiving it; drawback of using Mangekyo harms the eyes which can lead to blinding, ultimately losing the light to see properly. Later we learn of how to obtain EMS (Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan).

Itachi was lying when he said Sasuke needed to kill his best friend, the technical requirement is to kill someone of great emotional importance to you (which tends to be your best friend). He knew Sasuke wouldn't be able to kill his best friend so in the end, Itachi knew Sasuke wouldn't have the MS by the time they fought, again, as a means to help Sasuke get the MS by letting Sasuke kill him, the person who had the greatest emotional importance to Sasuke, even though it was hatred, it was once love.

Idk if this is already revealed or not but Uchihas are known to love their beloved ones deeply. So when they lose them their emotions are stronger than others. Sharingan activates/upgrade when Uchihas feel strong emotion especially the emotion of losing their loved ones urge the power in their eyes to rise just like how Sasuke being placed in the tight spot of losing Naruto makes his sharingan upgrade in fight with Haku. I think you're confused with Itachi's words of 'killing ur best fri will make u get M.S'. From what i understand, he said those based on his experience of losing his best fri awaken his M.S. It doesn't have to be best fri. Sasuke just need to love that one dearly. So we can assume that Sasuke didn't awaken his M.S right after he killed Itachi is cuz he don't know how to feel about him. But when tobi shed lights on him, his emotion of love and adoration of his brother came back and make him suffer, leading to the awakening of M.S(not bcuz Itachi is his bf). And it was described somewhere in the books that Sasuke was closer to Itachi than his parents.

It doesn’t need to be your best friend for an Uchiha to unlock the Mangekyo Sharingan. The only reason Itachi said that was because losing a best friend would probably bring the biggest pain and suffering towards Sasuke and the Uchiha clan gets stronger due to pain and hatred, depending on how much your loss affects you, it could be enough to bring out the Mangekyo Sharingan. When the Uchiha clan feels strong love or a strong connection towards someone and that is taken away, they get stronger just because of that. Think of how it is in Dragon Ball Z, when Goku gets hurt he gets a Zenkai Boost and he gets stronger, is similar to this as well but instead of physically it is mentally for the Uchiha clan

My theory is that Itachi told Sasuke that he had to kill his best friend because he had already killed everyone Sasuke cared about, so he just said "Well, you can't have family again, but you surely will have a best friend at least". Steejo is not the fact that Sasuke killed someone who was not his best friend. You should realize that what provides the breakthrough or the next level of the sharingan is the fact of losing someone very, very !!!! important to you. That's why Itachi said "your best friend", but actually he doesn't have to be your best friend. Sasuke and Itachi are brothers and despite everything, they were very close. That is why Sasuke obtained the mangekyou sharingan by killing Itachi because he killed someone very dear to him, someone very close, even though Sasuke hated him and wanted to kill him.
