71+ year old FUD here. Hand loaded 257 Roberts, 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser, 6.5-06, 7x57 Mauser. All those need to be hand loaded to their real potential. In factory rounds: 300 H&H, 338-06, 35 Remington 375 H&H. You’d probably want to hand load the 300 H&H and the 338-06 because of cost but you can find them in factory loads. Last but not least 9.3x62 Mauser for anything on the North American continent or anything in where legal. Same thing can be said for 375 H&H. Loads for anything from Whitetails to African dangerous game. There’s my list for you to choose from for the next several years. Ha

Try one of the old classics - .257 Roberts or 7X57 Mauser/.275 Rigby. Might have to look to find a rifle in those chamberings, but the search is worth it.

Going out this year for some white tails, for the first time with my oldest. Me after a bout a 30 year pause. 30-06 for me, 243 for the boy. 165 grain Federals and 100g Federals, respectively. Been practicin' lots at the range: sitting, standing and kneeling. My rig's a Husqvarna 1640, the lad's is a Savage 110. Should be a good time... and hopefully good eating. Cheers from Canuckistan.

30-30 In a bolt gun or a nice side ejecting lever gun with an low power optic ,in brush is pretty hard to beat. It's taken a slew of deer all over America ,for many years.. On the other end of the spectrum, 7mm rem mag. That's what was awesome back in the 80's and is a little much for Whitetail, but if you're shooting in the open it's a great cartridge for longer ranges ,and they do not run far...if at all sometimes it blows them off their feet / hooves. That's 2 that you haven't said much about or if you did I missed it. Use What You Are Confident In... God Bless you and your loved ones GODSPEED

Well,, you asked for suggestions, and then listed the first ones that came to my mind - .30-30 and .220 Swift. .303 British is also of interest. The reason is, the first centerfire I ever shot, back in the late '50's (!) was a Winchester 94 in .30-30 up in New Hampshire, at garden-raiding woodchucks. It was what we had, so we used it. My favorite of all, and one of the first rifles I ever bought, was a Ruger 77 in .220 Swift, that I handloaded to 4,400 f/s, and have always been curious as to its effect on deer based on lots of "lore" about how they drop on the spot thanks to the immense hydrostatic shock. And one of my favorite packing rifles, a "Jungle Carbine" in .303 British seems like it would do the job and be both easy to handle and truck through the woods. I'm partial to carbines - the first "play gun" I had was my dad's M1 carbine that he brought home from the war. Something about light, compact, and lethal appeals to me - but it's clearly marginal for all but the smallest of deer, and at close range at that. My other favorite is my big bear gun in .458 Win Mag, that I bought when I was looking at land up North of Lake Superior. Heavy, Mannlicher-stocked, and Magnaported, it's actually an easy gun to shoot, but you need to point it at something big like a buff unless you're a fan of scrambled whitetail for breakfast. Quite a cross-section of hunting rounds you have there, and quite a cross-section of hunting experiences. Interesting video, as always.

Air gun... you would be surprised what is available in the air gun world. Beyond the BB gun you had as a kid. Inline muzzle loaders. Or go old school and get the attire and a good flint lock or precusion cap and ball rifle. Crossbows are a good choice as well. Some are shooting MOA at 100 yards.

So many times people go out and buy this or that type because someone told them it was the best thing but they don’t practice and that is where they fail! The person with only one rifle that practices all the time will be deadly with that weapon! Sometimes having too many isn’t good either! The two measurements you are thinking of are Max effective area and Max effective target. Max effective area pretty much give you your max distance on your projectile and still be lethal, while max effective target gives you your effective limitation on what you shoot accurately. For example if you can bang on steel at 750 yards but only feel comfortable shooting 450. 750 would be your Max effective Area and 450 would be your Max effective Target ranges. Ethical hunting you should never shoot beyond your Max effective target. Some might even challenge that theory and say closer to account for environmental factors and distance miscalculations at max effective target.
