I’m happy to see an increasing interest in Moto Guzzi abroad, especially in the US. I’m italian, born and raised in Italy, and I’ve been a Guzzista since my early motorcycling days thanks to both my grandfathers. I have a V85TT for normal riding and longer trips, and a old Le Mans III for shorter but more enticing rides. I won’t ever sell the Le Mans, and I really enjoy how comfortable and (relatively) agile the V85TT is, but everytime I see a Griso I would really love to have more space (and deeper pockets!) for a third Guzzi. Anyway here in Italy we ofter refer to the Griso as a “roadster”, which I think it’s something in between of a naked bike and a cruiser.

I have the same year 2007 but the 850cc version. It lacks the oil cooler and shows that beautiful Guzzi big block. I realize many doesn’t understand 850 and big block in the same sentence. Sitting on this long wheelbase substantial bike negotiating a twisty road, actually riding the bike, braking, accelerating, changing gears - you’d start to understand. Guzzis are an experience. Griso’s are a great experience. Ride safe mates.

The Griso 1100 simply delivers in the "smiles per miles"-department! And the old pushrod-engine is far more reliable than the newer 1200 4v with its ohc cams. Surprisingly the 1100 NEEDS revs and feels the best between 4-7000 rpm - and even rewards you with better economy compared to lugging it.The fully adjustable suspension and the competent brakes turn this sport-tractor into a bike that has the potential to surprise on the road despite only having 88 HP at 250 kg.

The Griso has a really long wheelbase, which gives it that feel you experienced in the turns. On the first ride, it doesn't feel like a curve eater. But.... Once you get to know the bike, once you learn it, you will find it is incredibly capable in the turns and the mid-range torque allows you to adjust your line with a twist of the grip. I've got a feeling you're going to be in trouble when you ride the 8 valve. It packs an additional 25 horsepower and has a less "friendly" personality. It's like the gen 1 on steroids and I wouldn't be surprised if it find its way into your garage.

I have a 2007 Griso I just bought this spring. I love it, and it gets a ton of attention wherever I take it, where no one has ever looked twice at any other bike I’ve ever had. A couple things I noticed in the video. The reliability issues are in the early 1200 models, with the cylinder head tappets. Also just to note about that bike you were riding, it’s got an aftermarket seat and lowering pegs on it. The stock set up has a tight bend at your knee which was a little uncomfortable for me when I first got it, but adding a Corbin seat raised the seat just enough to relieve the pressure, and it was 100% better for me. Can’t wait to see part 2. This was a very accurate assessment of the bike in my opinion. Well done.

The Griso takes it's name from a character in an 1842 Italian novel: The Betrothed (Italian: I promessi sposi) "Griso is one of Don Rodrigo's henchmen, a silent and treacherous man." (think Burley and Brutal) I've had mine for about 8 years and 40,000 miles now. It's comfortable and I don't think I could give it up because it does everything I want so well. A utilitarian bike with aluminum panniers. Only my advancing age will force me to sell. For looks and raw comfort I have a V11 Lemans Rosso Corsa.

Thanks for covering the Griso! I love my 07'! The Griso slots perfectly between my Tuono and my R1150RT. Mine came with LSR handlebars, so the reach to the bars is even more exaggerated for me. Mine has a Mistral muffler, the motor sounds great uncorked! The only issue I have had with mine is leaking valve cover gaskets, a forty-dollar fix. The best part about a Gen 1 is I only paid $4500 for a near-perfect specimen! Looking forward to the Gen 2 video, I have yet to see one in person. Keep up the good work!

Great review. I have a 1976 T3 Cali and if anyone thought old BMWs were odd this is in a different league. Wind forward 40 years and I felt that the Griso and more recent Guzzis (and BMWs) had lost something. The low down grunt is replaced by more mid and top with lighter flywheels in the pursuit of more power in order to compete with the mainstream bikes. I’ve often felt that if you were to ride some of these bikes and didn’t know the make or engine layout they could be any twin. They are, of course, more than that and other idiosyncrasies give them the character we all seek. I rode a Griso a few years back and really liked it. Just not enough to buy one…….

I had a black 07 plate gen 1 Griso. I loved the querky styling, and after 25 years of nearly annual changes of my bikes I thought I'd found my forever bike. I changed the ridiculous cannon sized silencer for a Mass (italian) end can, and it transformed the vocal attitude of the bike. But then, the dreaded reliability issues reared their head. Firstly with the fuel pump in the tank which has a ribbed hose that splits. This was easily repaired with new fuel hose and clamps (a positive side to the internet). But then the reliable unreliability every time I washed the bike. Admittedly I use a leaf blower to dry naked bikes as it gets the water out of the nooks & crany's, but it would appear that on a still genuinely Italian owned brand the water is driven into the electrics as much as it's driven out by the leaf blower. Sadly we have no Motto Guzzi support near my home, so I sold the bike and bought a BMW R nine T, which I really liked, but Admittedly the Griso has a nicer sounding engine and seating position aswell as stance. In the BMW's defence it has a much more refined final drive though. You'll probably be pleased to know that I now own a Harley Breakout 114 (stage 1). Regarding the mode button, it isn't very intuitive but it does cycle you through a bunch of menu options and if I'm right in remembering one of them is a lap timer. Looking forward to your gen 2 review, as I was really fond of my gen 1. In a strange way, with the Mass end can it had the roar of a Harley....ish, and the road manners of a sit up muscle bike. Best of both worlds. Very characterful bike.

The Griso is probably better described as a muscle bike; something with a torquey engine, a bit of sporting character while not being a sportbike or a street fighter, and a whole bunch of attitude. It was first introduced around the same time as the Yamaha MT-01 and definitely fits into a category with it, whatever one might call that category.

Does Spite understand the difference between "Cruiser", "Roadster", Naked Sports" bikes? ROADSTERS are what NORMAL bikes are all about! They are meant to be the "everyman's motorcycle"! Commute, cruise, scratch or tour, they can do it all. (with the right accessories!) THAT is what the Griso is! It is NOT meant to do anything excellently, but it will do MORE than each of the other classes in their own field! ....and a good one will just put a smile on your face, as it accomplishes whatever your ride demands, whenever you ask it! (and that can change in an instant, when you discover that new road, or meet that new bunch of friends!) The Griso is a UNIQUE solution to the roaster concept, as only the Italians can do! Should they bring back the Griso? ....NO NEED! The Mandello is a good development/evolution that replaces what the Griso used to provide, ....and then some! The V7/9 bikes are just as unique, and are a very slight retro touch to the modern need for those roadsters! Understand what a roadster is, and you start to understand what the entire motorcycle market is about!
