You know why this is happening? It’s because brands like Chanel can produce bags of lesser quality and people still buy them. You want to correct this? Stop buying luxury goods.

The majority of my extensive collection is Kate Spade, Coach, Tory Burch, Polene, Aspinal of London. They quality is great. The more high end designers increase their prices the more I turn to these brands. I’m happy enough with the lower end brands and happy to invest the money I would have spent on the higher end designers.

I think the high end luxury bags do have good quality but they cannot really do more for them to make them perfect and yet the prices are increasing ridiculously. I do have some luxury bags but that's it. I will never buy form those fashion houses anymore and I do find more joy in my "contemporary" collections without hurting my bank. I'd rather spend my money in travelling.

Hey Sophie! The giant luxury brands have decreased quality to meet the demand and also to pocket in more money. But, I do believe that the quiet luxury brands like Kiton, Brunello Cuccinelli, and Loro Piana have great bags (as a male lol don’t know what’s “cute” and what isn’t) but their bags range from $2-4k which is Louis Vuitton money. Plus, they’re unique bags that you won’t see that often. Don’t know if women are into buying bags from a brand known for male clothing but you should check them out.

Totally agree. The quality of the luxury brands went downhill over the last decade or so. With the number of collections being released these days, it's impossible to deliver superb quality. My bags from twenty years ago look much better than the more recent ones. The last decent bag I bought was YSL College bag which I got ten years ago and it's still in great condition. I was trying to get something this year for my big birthday and I think I've returned like seven bags due to poor quality. I literally gave up on trying to find something perfect. Also it's difficult to predict if something will wear well or not. Only once you've worn the item over a period of time, you will know how it performs. I think that lot of these so called Superbrands rely on their fame and heritage and take advantage by simply splashing their logo on anything they can as they know they will make tons of money. The times where design and craftsmanship were priority , not logo, are over unfortunately.

I recently checked out the new ysl College bag and quality was AWFUL! It looked so cheap! The leather was sort of hard and plastic like. So disappointing! This was Selfridges in Manchester. I almost mentioned Coach in my comment. I received a Coach bag at the same time as my first online LV purchase. I was surprised at how LV just dropped my 2 straps with all that hardware inside the bag, placed the bag in a dust bag, then in an over-sized LV box to knock around during shipping. There were scratches on the hardware when it arrived in addition to several other quality issues (IMO). My Coach bag was wrapped like their grandmother's heirloom china right down to foam protectors on each zipper pull. This reassures me that I'm getting a Coach bag that's never been used. I have a suspicion that might not have been the case with the LV I received.

Good quality with luxury brands is a rare thing these days. This imo is why contemporary brands are soaring right now. I have collected luxury for 30+ yrs, everything I’ve purchased the last 5 yrs doesn’t compare to older stuff. Hermes is the only brand I’ve not had an issue with, Gucci and Loewe have been 99% perfect. The worst for me has been Chanel and LV, I’ve returned so many items that I gave up on those brands. In walks Coach, Aspinal, Marc Jacobs- excellent pricing and generally great quality.

Learning about sewing professional finishings, has really helped me to see if items are high quality or not. Certain ways to do linings, reinforcements, etc. What I found the most surprising, is no brand seems to be consistent. They'll have two jackets that are very similar. One will be nicely made, the other won't; both will be the same price and in the same shop.

Sophie, the point being is that all of these things are commodities of daily use. A purse is a container to transport things. All purses will fall apart one day, no matter the price tag. And I think that small brands provide betterment quality because of a smaller audience. The problem always comes once businesses scale up. To stay profitable either you have to increase prices or decrease quality. Unfortunately designer brands do both at the same time because they know that people want to show off the logo. Real luxury is anyways time and not commodities. Luxury is an illusion to impress other people you don’t even like. For me, after every luxury purchase I have made in the past there was a huge disappointment on how those things were holding up so I refuse to spend money on it for a long time already. If you look for good quality brands I would recommend to look at sustainable fashion brands like Sézane that come with a good quality at a friendly price tag.

This comment is about leather accessories. Leather by nature being the skin of an animal will have wear and tear. It is unrealistic to think areas that regularly touch surfaces will not show wear and tear. As for the metals used, again metal scratches. If the metal is painted to have another colour it will not stand up to regularly wear the same way as chemically treated metal. A bag that costs 4000 will wear and tear the same as a 400 bag.

From what I've heard and read, these brands do maintain the quality/craftsmanship and the exclusivity. The conundrum is that they produce significantly less styles than some of the more mainstream designer brands, so it is not as easy to find bags that fit your personal taste.

I totally agree that luxury has become more like fast fashion and for me this development couldn’t be more absurd. I like that luxury has become more accessible to people that aren’t from higher classes but now the items come with the same/even worse environmental impact for a higher price: the quality has become bad, so people will not have the items forever which is the idea of a lot of people when buying luxury. Still, the brands are trying to keep their exclusive status by constantly increasing the price tags. So people with money still buy a lot of stuff they don’t need, which overall increases the consumption related to luxury. The losers of this, in my opinion, are still the people with lesser money (because let’s be honest the brands only need them to survive but don’t actually care about delivering good quality all the time) and the environment.

It is a shame to pay so much money and items do not wear well. I have a few Michael Kors bags (not monogram designs, but monochrome minimal branding) and a lot of poeple into luxury look down on contemporary designers. However, these bags are not over 6 years old, are being used a lot and have absolutely no wear or tear. Hardwear has not scratched. The leather (either saffinao or embossed cow leather) is in pristine condition.

I do not baby my bags and my Coach, MK, and Marc Jacobs bags still look brand new. I think it's silly if someone looks down on contemporary designers because they're essentially saying "yes our bags are of similar quality but at least I paid more for mine!" Lol

@@alison8606 It's ironic that Chanel and LV's downhill quality is often compared to Coach and Kate Spade, now that's slander. Coach and Kate Spade may be entry level high end brands, but their designs are fabulous and remarkably high quality. It says a lot about a holy grail brand when they have sloppy flaps, crooked zippers, subpar leather, twisted chains, and more defects. Chanel made swoonworthy bags at 1-2k, and defective messes at 6-10k.

Luv this background and I liked the music. I'm so done with over-priced heritage brands. Everything is mostly made in China or by imported cheap Chinese labor not true local craftsmen anymore.

Country of origin doesn't mean something is bad quality. China has the best clothing mass manufacture technology and has the capacity to create everyday stuff Americans take for granted. I mean Chanel, Gucci, etc are all made in western Europe with their supposed 'racially superior heritage craftsmanship', yet their items apparently aren't what they used to be.

35 years ago, I bought 2 LV duffel travel bags. The zip went on one about 15 years ago. I had it fixed and asked at the shop if I should just buy a new one instead. The assistant at LV told me that the quality is much worse these days. The canvas for a start is thinner. I don't think 'luxury' is very high quality anymore. Brands are just responding to the huge surge in sales. I don't buy luxury goods anymore. It's all hype.

I have been leaning towards brands that are not super saturated on social media which I think is a kiss of death now - especially in the terms of quality. Moynat, Valextra and Delvaux is the way to go for me. I love Loewe, but I’m a little scared that they might also being heading towards the direction of skimping out on quality which is why they are discontinuing the OG puzzle design for the Edge which I heard is easier and cheaper to make. Also, I’m ok with buying luxury secondhand but definitely pre 2019. I feel that quality of a lot very popular brands really started to decline after 2019.

Stop buying labels. Buy Handmade leather goods instead. Made by local crafter. Made out of high quality leather. They make high quality stuff for fraction of the price .

The wear you showed on the back of shoes etc is from driving, it happens to all shoes and just like yours its worse on the right shoe because that is the accelerator pedal in the UK, less so on the left shoe as we use the clutch less or have automatic cars. You need to to just get a pair of cheap driving shoes to keep in the car and change shoes when you arrive.

Question: what hardware do you have that doesn’t scratch? It’s metal. Metal scratches. I love LV monogram. It’s all I buy and will buy from LV. Their quality is certainly better than Chanel.

I have used Havre de Luxe for a Louis Vuitton belt hardware that started scratching immediately. Their brand is very cute, the packaging is darling, and shipping to the USA was very quick. The protective sticker didn’t fit perfectly on the LV hardware, so mine has a little fold in it that is noticeable if you look closely, and there is a tiny section that still isn’t covered because of that. However, I have kept mine on and would buy more. In fact, I used the leftover sticker to put on the little hardware buttons on the kirigami pouch just to protect the hardware. I’m sacrificing aesthetics slightly, but for me it’s worth it- especially if I decide to resell at some point.

We're really paying for the name and not the quality. I prefer lower end designer,s like Kate Spade, Coach, and even Senreve. Senreve is the most expensive bags I own. No matter the quality, you will ahve wear and tear, so I choose to go cheaper so that I don't lose so much money. If you have the money, then buy the higher end brands, but know you're paying for the name.

LV newer bags may have declined in quality but I have some vintage bags, 20 to 30 years old, and they still look amazing. The hardware does require some polishing but once polished it looks new again. I have had some bad luck with Gucci. The bag had some peeling on the handle.

I own Chanel Maxi from 2012 and the gold is so good, I bought a Chanel bag from the Chanel free standing store in short hills mall New Jersey and there was a stitch out of place and they saw it too after I went back and it was as if it was nothing to them I’m so done with buying luxury bags .

I've stopped consuming luxury goods to be honest. 2020 kinda dulled the necessity to own flashy items. I like my current collection of Dior, Chanel, LV and Gucci. But now I'm drawn more to understated brands without logos and quality stitching.

I think the only way to get quality is to buy vintage and give it some professional TLC. The cost of the item + TLC will still be less than buying new and will be longer lasting!
