I visit Trecco Bay in the seaside town of Porthcawl South Wales, Trecco Bay is the biggest caravan park not only in the UK but in Europe too! Serving 50,000 people between the 13th of July and 23rd September, when the park re-opened after the pandemic. It has over 2000 caravans!
But what else is there on the biggest holiday park in the uk?
Let's find out!

I went to Caister back in the '80s. The North Sea is a little unforgiving though. I was really very young when I went to Porthcawl and don't remember it a huge mount. With all the expansions and revamping that has been going on since Covid popped up I imagine a lot of changes have been happening through the older parks so I guess they all deserve a revisit at some point

Another interesting and informative video, thanks Tim. Talking of buying a caravan / Park home. My late Father did excatly that. Back in the late nineties when he retired, he sold his house, paid off the small amount of remaining mortage and bought a Park home in Scarborough (He was from Nottingham, but loved Scarborough as he used to go sailing there as a younger man) He could only live in it 11 months of the year, and had to vacate it every February so as he had a decent lump sum left from the house sale he used to go to Cyprus or Italy for the month, sometimes even as long as three months of the British winter, and he managed to do this right up until he passed away in 2013 when the money had run out, so no inheritence for me!.....and that's how it should be, it was his money he'd worked hard for it at a manual job all his life and I'm glad he got to enjoy it in the twilight of his life.....Love the channel Tim, keep up the good work fella!

I think a problem is most holiday parks there is the pitch fee and a 10/12 year age limit on caravans, though you can relocate your caravan often to the "2nd tier" parks for a bit more lease of life, then sell off for use as say construction site huts or go kart track control units ! Some really old caravans if maintained can be quite retro.

lovely story, but as said caravans are almost a life style choice....not many people have 60k to drop on a trailer van so get credit so say £500 a month, Then site fees another £500 a month plus water gas and leccy........its a thing of the past of them being cheap.......its almost only the wealthy that can afford them now.....And if you sell it....bang 20% goes back to the park as well...Move site? another 20%. My mate had two on a site in kent and tried making it work with renting them out when he wasnt there etc.......HArd work for nothing......Summer time is ok but out of season its very hard to rent..... Its more of a thing for retired people to do wh0 have lump sums .....then you only have the 500 a month site fees which are more manageable....

Wow. This has blown my mind. The progress made there is amazing. Hard to equate that park today with the same park I visited as a kid, with gas lights in the caravans, buckets for toilets in the caravans, which had to be slopped out in the mornings, in the community washrooms/toilets and nightly entertainment being the Dirty Duck and the Jolly Sailor.

We would all meet up in porthcawl from the valleys. And end up drinking in the Log cabin went drinking in the nightclub next door cannot remember the name of it now. My two mates Carl Turner and Ceri James ended up so drunk they had to call an Ambulance. They were mad times but happy times would not have changed it for anything.When your young you do not have a care in the world. Thanks for all the fun and laughter boys. Miss you both. Mark Jones😂❤

Still the area around is a deprived part of wales and 7 years ago when I went it was very busy and a lot of rough people there, plus the pool is open to the public so you would que with 30 people for an hour to get 30 mins in the pool when I had paid £1100 for the week! I wouldn't go this site again!

Spent a week there in August and was impressed, did have some faults. Limited menu's in the restaurants, the show dome looks like a dump by the end of most nights as it gets rammed. Overall they do make far more effort than many other operators and the entertainments included some household names. Private renting is available and they will sell you 'access' to the facilities and entertainment for about £25 per person per week. We got the boy band '5' & Joe Pasqale, you might be luckier ;-)

Most of my childhood holidays were in a caravan. Used to go to South Denes caravan park in Lowestoft. Used to have gas lighting and lots of earwigs everywhere! Used to be fun though, there was a beach nearby, lovely gardens across the road and the Sparrows Nest Theatre as well as a bandstand which used to do talent comps in the summer for the kids......nightimes were walking from the site through the town and along the front for a back of chips and a play on the pennies, then back to the caravan for a cuppa and playing cards.....great days

My neck of the woods Tim. Live about 20 miles away. I did not know all that stuff in the center existed. Used to be very run down and I think that is still reflected in the Coney Beach funfair at the entrance. The nearby town of Porthcawl remains a nice place to visit with decent shops, eateries and pubs. Many thanks.

Some of my extended family are big caravaners (is that a word?) and they have ones like the one you featured, on a static site. It's a big part of their lives, and they love it. I also spent my childhood on caravan holidays (and Butlins/Pontins!), so these types of videos give me a lot of nostalgia! I dont know who is buying a £65k caravan...?! The price on the window says £950 a month, then you'll need to pay for electric and gas bottles which will add at least another £50+. In contrast, I've just come back from 5 days in inclusive in Spain for £1050 for 2 people. I could do that holiday every month for 5 years, and still not spend as much as that caravan would cost me! People like different things of course, but I'm just not sure what the selling point is for a lot of people. Great video as always! :)
@klopotynajmana5987
@klopotynajmana5987 Жыл бұрын
After a while this caravan is yours,so you can sell it back for at least half price as it will be still pretty new caravan after 3-5 years and your money for holiday wont get refunded right? you can even upgrade it and sell it for more so what kind of way of thinking is it,dont understand,like you said everyone likes something else. Hopefully that explained selling point at least one of few selling points :)
@sarahstrong7174

Sometimes people buy caravans & use them for their own family holidays & then let them to others the rest of the time, which probably pays for the caravan, so you would effectively be getting your holiday accommodation free. I think that is what people do to make the economics work out.

Taking into consideration that you have to pay a yearly site fee from around 3,000 pounds for holiday homes ( previously called caravans ) utilities, self catering, insurance, incidental costs ( draining the holiday home down for the winter ) Can you sub-let when you don't use the caravan? What are the restrictions ( if any ) Depreciation, Is it a 12/10 month park? Whatever it is, you cannot stay there for as long as you wish, it is not a residential park and therefore before you even think about investing in purchasing one, make sure you read the contract properly and if you are not sure, seek professional advice. By the way, that caravan you looked at is by far over priced. Great video as always Tim.

Also be aware of the age restriction of vans. Some parks dictate a maximum age before the van has to be removed. They do this to keep the place looking fresh rather than filled with old worn vans which also inflates sales.

Various pitfalls to buying a van and letting the parks hire it out, its very low risk for them. Friend of mine did it lost a packet didn't make much from the park they charge fees take no responsibility for damage, my friend had 5 weeks a year he would use it, said he didn't make much money back and the only people making money are the parks @@graememckay9972

Your only there for maybe a week or two so you don’t get too really know your neighbours or the neighbours you’ve just started chatting too upon your arrival their going home in two days so a few days later, they have gone and you’ve got a entirely new family in there. I suppose the caravan owners get too know each other as they spend months living in them out of season, but holiday makers are coming and going all the time. Stopped in Skegness caravan park last year, got chatting too the dad that evening seemed like a nice guy, went too bed on the night, by the time I woke up in the morning about 9am they had packed and left😂 by 1am another family was moving in. Yes but in America you guys have way more trailer parks and freedoms than we do. You guys can just go boom docking wherever you please for up too 14 days that’s a dream in the UK. Park up any lay-by or side of a field in a motor home you can guarantee you’ll have the police knocking on your door the next morning asking you too move, but only in England. Scotland you can pull up anywhere and camp for a few nights without fear of being moved on, same in Wales and Ireland. I’d love too take my motor home across America and just pitch up where I please, that would be awesome🙂

I used to work here for a few years, it's one hell of a place to work good and bad, one thing is the cleaners , they don't like cleaning! So many complaints lol. I remember once a customer lost their hamster in a non pet van, the whole place was turned upside down when the cleaner walked in, then a cleaner found it in the sofa and had the fright of her life .. the customer never asked for it back! One of reception took it home in the end. Love your videos!

Yes you can live it in caravan all year i know some people living in caravan for like 3rd year in row now and they say they wont change it for house. "Yes, you can live legally in a caravan year round in the UK and have it as your main house. You just need to find a suitable plot of land and get planning permission, or find residential parks near you where you'd like to live" thats what google says and i know for fact if you know any of the owners of caravan parks its good to have word to them. :)

In Northumberland, there’s 3 Parkdean parks within about 10 miles of each other. 2 of them are within 2 miles of my house.

Hey Tim. Theres actually another caravan site on the East coast called Primrose Valley in Filey. I've been going there for 17 years now since it was a tiny park although it now has over 3000 caravans to my knowledge (Possibly the biggest caravan site in the UK. Even bigger then this one). Its a very beautiful park with a even more beautiful town nearby being Filey. Its absolutely HUGE too and takes forever to get from one end to another even in the car. Great video as always!

I went to Primrose Valley when I was younger with my parents and it was one of the best sites we have stayed on. Hiring the 4 person bike things and pedalling to the beach was great. I have to visit Primrose again!

Love Parkdean! Went to Grannies Heilan Hame in Dornoch (in the Scottish Highlands) a couple years back and it was beautiful! We live near Glasgow so wasn't too far to travel, maybe 6 hours with a decent break part way, and was pretty cheap too! 7 nights for 3 people and a dog for less than £400. Planning to go back a bit earlier in the season next time though as we went at the end of September and it was so bloody cold! Still went paddling in the north sea though. Was the dog's first time being on a beach and she loved it too!

Hi Tim, We love your videos (a family of 3 from Liverpool - two 45 year olds and a 9 year old) - we even watch them on KZbin on our big TV so you must be entertaining! This was the first video of yours we watched a couple of months ago as we had already booked a holiday at Trecco Bay so wanted to see what it was like. Since then, my 9 year old keeps putting your videos on and we have all ended up getting into them. I love your videos of unusual places like the hotel in a prison in Cornwall, the tiny sleep pod in Gatwick Airport, the overnight train to Scotland, the motorhome (I've always wanted to stay in one) and the 7 star hotel in Dubai. Keep up the great work! x
