A couple of years ago I was a middle school teacher in Anton for several years until I just couldn't make it on my low rural teacher salary and had to go teach in Wolfforth (+50% salary). I know that Anton just didn't have the revenue base to pay anything above Texas minimum teacher pay scale. If Anton had even been able to close my salary gap by half I would have stayed there forever. Its a great community even if there isn't much money there. In addition to the decline of king cotton, the big issue facing a lot of rural Texas cities is dwindling water supplies. So many small towns in Texas have wasteful crumbling water systems and are often subject to boil water alerts and water shut downs.

I’m so glad you featured the town of Earth. My wife and I live on a farm very close to there. We just celebrated 100 years as a town last June. At time 32:50 you show a closeup of the mural. It shows a lot of history of the town. The gentleman on the right was Bill Clayton the only Speaker of the Texas House of Reps to serve 4 consecutive terms as speaker. The B-25 airplane represents the Doolittle raid on Tokyo. Robert L Hite was the copilot of plane #16. He was captured by the Japanese and was one only four that survived to come home. He graduated from Springlake Earth High School as class President in 1938. Another thing shown represents the Bracero Program that brought many people (legally) from Mexico to help work the farms. We have a very great history in this area and are very proud of it. If I had known you were here I would have bought your lunch at the Wolverine. A lot better food than the place you went to.

They’re fading due to a couple of factors. Technology is pushing farm consolidation everywhere, but on the Texas high plains the depletion of the ogallala aquifer has had a massive effect. As irrigation capacity declines it takes more acres to produce a viable economic unit.

In summer of 1973 I was a young GI at Fort Hood. Once while on leave and driving up to Colorado, my car suffered a broken fan belt about 5 miles south of Earth. A Texas Trooper drove me into Earth to that very Sinclair station, in operation at the time, where I paid for a fan belt. The attendant drove me back to my car and helped me to replace the fan belt, all at no extra charge! I’ll always fondly remember Earth, Texas!❤😊

Amherst had the old style lumber yard. I think the "Red and White" store in Amherst was a grocery chain. I came through some of these towns last summer heading home from vacation. It is sad about these towns. They are declining while the large cities keep getting more crowded. With this "work from home" stuff, it seems that some of this could change. I look forward to your video about Marfa. I was there a few years ago and plan to return in the spring.

Absolutely great video. As if I wasn’t homesick enough. LoL have been in this area in and around Lubbock. Thanks for doing these small Texas towns. I guess some think I’m crazy but I still love these places. Even if I do have to drive a bit for my bigger needs. The peace and quiet and slow pace is worth it to me. I always find it interesting when you do the stats, one of my favorite parts. Especially when you’re doing a few close towns like this. According to some of the numbers you might as well have been a thousand miles apart. My only thoughts on the high crime rate in that town would maybe coincide with the high poverty level. But ya can’t complain about the numbers in the other towns. It’s all just beautiful to me. Nice restaurant there, have been by it but never stopped before. It was great to be back up on the Llano Escalodo. Always liked it up on that big plain. Really excited to see the upcoming ones heading south. Safe travels my friend and keep filming I’ll keep watching.

@36:26 ...well the hotdog is made from the "unknowns"... the leftover trimmings, probably from a CAFO nearby Sudan, Tx., so I think it is definitely not as healthy as the tuna and also continues to add toxic wastes to our Gulf of Mexico, which is already currently in crisis; however, the tuna perpetuates the massive fishing industry cartels that continue to destroy our oceans, so either way you slice it, I don't think either are a good choice, since you asked, but I don't judge either of you for what you eat. Just my two cents. I thank you very kindly for this new show I just fell upon a few months ago. One reason for low home values is that homes don't change hands often through sales. With population decline, no one moves in and buys a house. Therefore, the available records of sales go back years, so inflation makes those old sales prices meaningless.

It feels like 1980 was best point in time in most of US small towns. All those abandoned houses, stores and other businesses, most of them were still in use in 1980 or at minimum those building were in decent shape even if they weren't used. That's maybe 80 percent of all those abandoned buildings we have seen in this channel. Even if some towns peak population was in 1920 that town was still prosperous and living in 1980. People moved away from those small town into larger cities and for what, everybody is more lonelier and unhappier than ever and those large cities look horrible these days. If you are so lucky that you can work from home or are retired, you really can turn back time and move into one of those beautiful towns and leave those ugly soulless cities behind.

Thank you for showing around in small towns in US. I live in a very small town myself in a little scandinavian country, and I have to admit, we do have one or to houses here that certainly look abandoned. But I am so chocked to see so many abandoned houses in your videoes, and so Munch decay. Why is that? Thank Young for showing

It would be awesome if you could state the month, day and time of day of your visit to each town as it would be easier to put things into prospective which you do once in a while. Love to watch your videos and I've been watching for quite some time ‼️🙂

The abandoned rail line was just a siding. They would detach train cars and park them on the sidings for loading and unloading back when they had a depot that handled freight, in this case probably a lot of cotton bales. Didn't see a loading platform so it was probably done away with decades ago. The use of trucks to transport freight to larger hubs killed a lot of small railroad towns. Less efficient but cheaper to do that way.

Most of the old rail lines in Texas were linked into all towns that had a cotton gin. In the early 70s all those old rails were reclaimed and nothing remained but the mounds and roads or streets that once were crossings. A good example is Midlothian Tx and the old route from Dallas came just below the cotton gin. There was an S curve and then over the track heading back to our base in Alvarado Tx. One winter we were on our way back to base and there had been a very large snow dropping and ice coverage of all the roads. We got to that S curve and four of us had to get out of the car and shove the back of the car straight so we could cross that rail line and get back to base. Today none of those old lines remain not even the cotton gin. Alvarado also had rail and a gin and a few people at the base worked part time at the Alvarado gin. My old base is still there intact but the city of Alvarado is totally unrecognizable to me. I recently dropped down street level at the launch area where I worked and there had been two new nice homes built down the highway leading to the upper section of the base. I knew then it is only a matter of time and the old base will finally be worth more to sell than to be worthy of history. It is one of the few old NIke Bases still intact and fenced. The old post office in the heart of what once was downtown Alvarado or the square, is still there due to it being a historical building. We had no mail delivery at the base so if you wanted your mail you would need to drive to downtown and walk into that old post office that looked extremely old with wooden floors made from very old thick plank. There was a new bank on the corner across the street from that post office and today it is an old empty faded building, if it is still there, I haven't looked in a few years. I have a lot of good memories from that period of 67 to 68. My girlfriend from Alvarado drove me to Dallas Love Field when I left for Vietnam. She passed away two years ago from cancer. These trips you make really are great and a lot of people enjoy them.
