That's also one reason why I think it's be hard for me to just leave the country. If this place is going to rot away in its own misery, then let me rot away with it. Romania is my home. I’m Romanian and have been living here for 31 years. I would say this review is mostly accurate. The good and the bad. The only inaccurate part is the one related to the Carol Park monument. During the communist era, it was indeed built to commemorate George Gheorghe Dej (not to be confused with the singer Gheorghe Gheorghiu- the Dej is important), but after 1989, Dej’s bones were removed and replaced with bones from unknown soldiers from WW1. So, nowadays, it is commemorating “the unknown soldier”.

Very nice shopping centres and this city really has charm! And the best of all is that it is not a typical mass tourism place so it feels so much more authentic than for example Prague and Budapest. I recently visited Romania for a few days and some observations not covered by your video: 1. Brasov and Sighisoara have very well preserved old towns with Germanic/Saxon influence. 2. Lots of Castles like Bran castle(more famous for association with Dracula tho no real life basis) and Peles castle (fancy European dwelling). Also some fortified churches and citadels which I didn’t have time to see. 3. Romanian Parliament - inside it is wild. It’s built of opulent marble and gold and crystal and insanely expensive stuff costing 4 billion euros and everything had to be made in Romania. The road leading up to it was purposely made to be slightly longer and wider than the Champs Élysées in Paris - all by orders of Ceausescu tho he died before it was finished. Fun fact: Michael Jackson in 1992 came to the Romanian parliament balcony and said to an adoring crowd “I love you Budapest” 😂

He told me that the teachers were telling them that the guys in blue/grey helmets and uniforms were Ceaușescu's guards and that the guys with green uniforms and helmets shooting at them were regular soldiers who wanted Ceaușescu gone. He told me that on the TV they saw just as many of Ceaușescu's guards participating in the revolution as they did normal soldiers. Not sure how accurate this description is, but growing up in the early 2000s I learned a lot about Cold War and post-Cold war Eastern Europe and the Balkans from him.

Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia became very good and in a way were also dependent on lets say very dynamic diplomatic shifts .. kind of a` la` Game of Thrones.. but without the fantasy elements. @anotherhistoryenthusiast58743 жыл бұрын
@@duxromanorum9861 Not only that. Dacia was only occupied for 150 years, a relatively short time, by the Romans. The formation of a Daco - Roman ethnicity is very unlikely. In other parts of the empire, it took 300+ years to assimilate people. It's not a coincidence that there are Aromanians in the south where Romans actually spent a lot of time. Vlachs are documented in a lot of Balkan countries as nomad pastoralists. It's much more likely that they were just standard Romanised Balkan folk, than Romanised Dacians. Now I am not saying that they were not present in Transylvania before the Hungarians, becouse they probably were. But it's very unlikely that there is continuity with the Dacians and it's much more likely that they were a product of a South Vlach migration in the Early Middle Ages, somwhen between 600 and 900 AD. Another thing is that the genetics of modern Romanians are almost the same as other peoples in the area. So there is no special Dacian blood. Or there is Dacian blood in every people in the area, not just you. You are slurring Hungarians, becouse the origins of their blood does not match with their linguistic origins. But it's the same case with you. You speak a Romance language, while being genetically most related of Southern Slavs. So bringing up Hungarians in this case is no more than hypocracy. Also those certain lands in Transylvania are not just Hungarian, becouse Hungarians settled them. Those places are Hungarian, becouse those were created by Hungarians. Even someone in this comment section noted, that the style of buildings in Cluj Napoca is very similar to the style of buildings in Hungary. These places were built by Hungarians, that's what makes them Hungarian. Land is just dirt. The place is determined by it's culture. Transylvania is rightfully Romanian, becouse most of it's population considers themselves Romanian, but downplaying the Hungarian contribution in the creation of that place is wrong.

One small correction, from a Romanian with a passion for architecture. The style used in many Eastern countries, with the "commie blocs", is called brutalism, and wasn't used until after Stalin's death. The architectural style associated with Stalin is socialist realism, of which, as far as I know, there is a single building in Romania that still stands: "Casa Scînteii" (former building of the regime's newspaper), renamed to "Casa Presei Libere" (lit. "House of the Free Press), in the north of Bucharest. A much more internationally recognised example of socialist realism is the Moscow State University.

The grey apartment blocks don't seem to belong to any style as even brutalizm calls for at least some variation in the overall structure. The blocks were to be simply functional, they were literally put together like Legos (check out some of the old photos from the construction period, it looks hilarious).
