7:27 fun fact: the song in the background was made by Latvia's most famous composer - Raimonds Pauls. The version of this song playing in the background is the translated russian version (because everything in the USSR had to also be translated into russian if it was originally in a "minority" langauge). He was also awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by Japan because a few years ago it went viral over there. Edit: The name of this song is "Dāvāja Māriņa" or "Million red roses" for the russian version.

Yeah Livs whee mostly wiped out and assimilated, their legacy is most palpable when it comes to toponymy, for example: The suffixes -iz-, -uz-, and -az- in place names indicate Livonian origins: Ainaži, Ādaži, Kuiviži, Kirgizi, Pabaži, Ropaži, Rustuzi, Suntaži, and others. River names: River names containing the appellative urga (stream): Mazurga, Pikurga, Urga, Urgale, Titurga, etc. Settlement names: Settlement names with the Livonian word küla, kila “village”: Ikšķile, Matkule, Puikule, and others.

At what cost? We lost our only things we cherished pride in. Our freedom lost to NATO and USA, our currency changed from Lats to Euro. Our neutrality to hate to Russia ( which in return they cut off all transit which Latvia was profiting of ) Latvia right now is just surviving from NATO donations which they get from praising Ukrainians. The entire capital was shatter around with Ukrainian flags for like 2 years, and only on Independence Day, feds thought that, maybe it’s important for the Independence Day to actually see Latvian flags and not Ukrainian. Latvia is a great country to visit for tourism, but if you want to stay here, prepare for a miserable life unless you have stashed millions in your bank account.

I did my Erasmus in Liepāja this year and it was probably my best decision ever. What a fucking cool country. I genuinely miss those times I spent there. I know it's not the sexiest place on Earth, cities are mostly not pretty, people are cold at first, although not as much as the weather, some places look really poor, but you have amazing nature, cheap alcohol (especially for my Western European wallet), pretty girls, actually cool people after a few glasses in their blood and an overall chillness I've rarely seen elsewhere, even in the most crowded places. It's kind of sad you equate the center of Riga to "Latvia", because it's so much more than that. I'm French and I have the same feeling when people say they visited France and didn't even leave Paris. What's fun is that I travelled a lot back then, around the country and also the neighbouring ones, and when I was back in Latvia, I was like "ahh finally I'm at home" even though I hadn't seen France in months 😆

Dude, I've been to Latvia for 3 months. Returned in February. After the first month, I felt more at home than in Hungary. You'd think, as a Serb, I'd feel more at home in the country so close to my own.I even picked up the language, which as a Serbian wasn't so hard. The sounds dz and c is giving me a nightmare because it's a different tone. The only thing I had an issue with was a few mistaking me for a Russian when they heard I either am from Serbia or me speak Serbian. Then again when I learned the full history behind the country thanks in no small part to my Latvian Russian friend I learned to just not mind as much. I hope to return there soon..

LATVIA MENTIONEDD!!! 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻 The history segment was just a student trying to make a presentation on a last day. So much missing context like the Baltic Ice Lake. Why Riga became the trading hub for the Germans (it was because of the Novgorod trade node, going against Daugava they could reach them). WW1 segment had a good starting premise, but derailed into 1 sentence events. If anyone wants official resource, you can use Latvian National Encyclopedia. I guess that does incentivize others to search for context themselves. Another fun fact that was missed is that prior to WW1, Riga was 3rd largest city in Russian Empire. I know you tried to educate, Latvians like when they are talked about, but the history segment was not Skrumpi hype. The Saint Peter's Church and the House of Blackheads was greatly explained, I loved it! ❤

My grandfather had to leave Latvia back in the 1930's had to flee the soviets, his neighbor and a bunch of others in his village were murdered and he was supposed to be the next one exactly he escaped. My Grandpa's family ended up burying almost all their valuables behind their barn. So that way after the war, they could try to attempt to dig it up and get it back. The sad thing is that my Grandpa's family had deep history daing back to the 13th century. Being one of the founding families of Coronian kings in Courland.

Conversely, our main culture shock was of people being so open, smiling, and very friendly to strangers. @@Ohio_Residental My friend was on a Baltic trip through Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. He was amazed by Latvia and said that it was his favorite country in every way. In general, all of my friends who were on their Baltic trip they always said they liked Latvia the most out of 3. Lithuania for them was just cool & fine, whereas the biggest problem they had with Estonia was the fact it was expensive.

Sucks to be a small nation sandwiched between Western Europe and Russia, as a Hungarian I know this all too well. But Latvia endured and is very pretty.

Fun fact: some of Riga's jugendstil buildings were designed by Michail Ėjzenštejn, the father of the film maker Sergej Ėjzenštejn. If you are interested in knowing more about this specific story I highly recommend you the book "Baltic souls"

Em, no. Eisenstein designed several houses, but he was not nearly the most prolific or recognized. His contemporaries called him the "mad confectioner" for his excessive fascination with decorative details. The architect Laube designed more than 200 houses, Pēkšēns - more than 250.

Man, that historic section went completely off the rails when it got to 20th century. It's almost completely safe to say that everything said in said section is absolute horse shit.
