The whole video is them basically parodying the Idol scene in Japan. One of the reactors that lives in Japan said the fans in that scene (for small bands) do somewhat look like this (obviously overexagerated), she clearly was not a fan of the scene. From the little Japanese I do understand, Fuki basically introduced the band in the beginning. Funnily enough, this released a year before Band-Maid formed and it's basically them in maidsy type of dressed playing rock/metal music. And yes, this is 2012 Gacharic Spin with Fuki from Unlucky Morpheus (Light Bringer back then as well) on vocals, the band formed when Fuki filled in for their original vocalist who left/was fired from the band during a tour and they needed people to fill in. Fuki was one of the multiple singers that helped them out and apparently it clicked so well that they formed Doll$boxx as a side-project for both.

Extra context about that idol scene. A lot of young women dreaming of becoming an idol, would preform at these venues. It's cramped, dark, the sound is terrible, and it smells. Not all of them, but honestly a lot. And if you are curious, yes there are videos of them on KZbin that an quick search will find. It's kinda like local indie wrestling shows. Not really good, but hey they are doing their thing with all their might.

Great summary. I would just add that that the counterpart to the idol scene is the otaku scene--otaku being extreme nerds, usually obsessed with some aspect of technology or pop culture, including manga or animie, and now girl bands. So this video is satirizing both the idols (idoru) and the otaku.
@MaartenT2 ай бұрын
@@leekebot1802 A lot of them do seem to enjoy what they are doing from the little glimpse I have seen. I saw a Japanese teacher youtuber interview people on the streets and he happened to find a bunch of girls that were in an idol group and just came from work and when he asked how many people they played for one of them said 20 (after which one of the others corrected her that it was "much more"). But from the rest of their answers they are either trained really well (or I might misread the typical Japanese politeness) or they really enjoy performing. But obviously they are dreaming for bigger gigs than that and the majority will never make it. The example Steve Hall gave about Miku in Lil Cumin is a good example, because I can't see how they would have made it. I don't really know anything about that scene, but just watching "walking through tokyo" videos is enough to see how many idols (and maid cafe's as well) there actually are.
@MaartenT2 ай бұрын
@@hiawatha.g Yes, they do look like stereotypical otaku from the Japanese media I have consumed over the years. It didn't really register like that for some reason, but the bandanas, glasses and the way they behave and such certainly remind me of it. I guess there is plenty of overlap as well since the idol group that was interviewed in the video I talked about in the other reply said it was basically always the same men that came to watch their shows.

Gacharic Spin , and by extension Doll$boxx - as all 4 musicians are in both bands - don't get nearly the kudos they deserve for their skill and musicality . Hana on drums and growls is also a multi instrumentalist . Chopper Koga is one of the best bass players in Japan ( and that's saying something ! ) . Oreo on keys & vocals is a superb player and last , but by no means least , Tomo-zo has a very unique style and an inventiveness which sets her apart from other guitarists . This song is part of a series ( which others will doubtless explain in the comments ) all different both in style and content which explore Japanese popular culture - worth listening to them all , if possible in order . The good news is that after a ( too ) long hiatus they will be back on the road soon playing live in a two " man " show with GS - should be fun !

Been a while since I took a close look at the video but IIRC the signs say “IDOL CONTEST” and Fuki tells the audience “We’re DOLL$BOXX! We’ll put your heart in a box!” So yeah, DOLL$BOXX is literally Gacharic Spin with walking train horn Fuki on vocals. Except GS tends to be more pop, and DB tends to be more rock/metal - but both of them pretty much play any genre they want.

So this video is actually the first introduction I had to Japanese all female rock bands. WAY back when it first came out 11 years ago. I already knew jpop, and visual kei as genres because of anime, but this was new, and different to me. Couple years later, here comes "Thrill" by Band-Maid on my KZbin recommendations, and we are not turning this boat around now. My musical taste has charted course for non-mainstream music since. If it weren't for Doll$boxx I may not have chased the rabbit down the hole, or the pigeon.

With groups like PassCode, Broken by the Scream, and Wagama Rakia making their way through the chika idol scene a few years after this was recorded really shifted the chika idol scene a lot. It's not just all pop today but a mix of metal, rock, and pop. It was actually the chika idol scene that gave Japan their first mainstream female lead act with harsh vocals in PassCode.

Great reaction. Yes, "controlled chaos" has been said many times about Gacharic Spin, and these talented women are the masters at combining different genres into a single song. From my understanding the regular singer for GS was having health issues and GS asked if there was a singer who could fill in since GS had a tour in Japan. Fuki was a fan, knew the words to their songs and joined the band for some of the dates. They got along so well that they decided to have a side project, which of course is Doll$Boxx. Tomo-zo, the guitarist, is very underrated and often too low in the mix, but she always has very well thought out riffs and solos that fit the song. Her pedal board and amp can create a wide variety of sounds, some very un-guitar like. Many of the other Doll$boxx songs are more guitar centered which is nice for the fans of Tomo-zo.

DOLL$BOXX - a side project of Gacharic Spin (four musicians) with powerhouse singer Fuki (the blond). They released an album called DOLLS APARTMENT (2012) which is a loose concept album about starting a band and trying to get successful. The third song is called "Take my chance" - this is a put-on of what it takes for a new group to make it, playing at small clubs, hoping to attraction attention. It's kind of difficult to put this band into a single category as they play all types of rock. The singer in this project, Fuki, is considered one of the best female rock/metal vocalist around and has worked/working in a lot of different projects (supposedly over 100 songs/albums). Her longest band is called Unlucky Morpheus and is more metal. To listen to them try this - CADAVER REVADAC - kzbin.info/www/bejne/namxZH9on9ele6s - be sure to watch the whole 9 minutes - the first part is the main song, the second part is the first part played in reverse (scored note for note backwards).

Revadac is a different song than Cadaver, it isn't just the same thing backwards. True, the sheet music is reversed, but the lyrics are different. Revadac suggests using the diamond to bring back the deceased.

Yep, it's Hana (Dr.) who contributes those screams. She's easily one of the musicians/artists I take my hat off to the most. Not only is she with F.C. Koga (Ba.) one of the founding members of Gacharic Spin, but also a genuine multi-instrumentalist who can supposedly play a total of 10 instruments including drums, guitar and bass, and she's a person who in my view simply thinks completely outside any box. I mean, who else would come up with the idea of playing 'Smell Like Teens Spirit' on household items? 🤭 I can only recommend it to you - 楽器を使わずNirvanaの"Smells Like Teen Spirit"を演奏してみた!! - it's one of several videos the members of Gacharic Spin made during the pandemic. From minute 2-30 she explains what she used, and from 8-30 there is the result. There are no official subtitles, but I don't think you really need them to understand what she is explaining. Yes and no. Eita was only with them for 10weeks or some such, and three “performer”/dancer/hype girls came and went. Losing original front woman Armmy after 2.5years was rough, and adding Angie (hype girl became front woman) and Yuri were confusing because with Yuri’s maternity leave and Hana sometimes still playing drums it seemed like a 3-5 year transition. But these core 4 musicians have almost 60years invested in Gacharic Spin, unwavering commitment

DOSS$BOXX's MVs are perfect studio recordings (Hana, the drummer's movements are awkward due to the restriction that she cannot hit the cymbals too hard.), but their true greatness is shown in their live performances. Either young girls in cutesie costumes singing covers, or halfnaked girls in late teens early twenties, doing some dance routines, that possibly would make Babymetal die of cringe. Doesn't help that it sounds... uhm... sour too. Common for all. There are mostly men who attend these clubs. I would assume the glasses are to look "foggy" because of the damp atmosphere. Sidenote about Armmy.. she sadly passed away in 2015.. 🥺

If you enjoy metal fusion, you may want to check out Yamikumo (闇雲), specifically their single '666'.

F Chopper Koga is a legend on the bass. Kanade (NEK!) is heavily influenced by Koga. Oreo is a beast on the keys. Tomo Zo doesn't get the credit she deserves on guitar (my opinion). Most bands would commit felonies to have Fuki as a vocalist. And then there is Hana. Drums, guitars, horns, harsh vocals, clean vocals... is there anything she can't do? Hana is in a class by herself.

This is a Gacharik spin with a guest vocalist. Still don't know Hana-chan's death voice on Gacharik Spin's drum guitar?

Don't get too caught up in music videos. They're not an accurate representation of what's being played. It's just acting.

Sometimes it's nice to read into the cinematography. 🤷🏽♀️
@russellward46242 ай бұрын
@NittPicc the cinematography i'm all in for. I'm just saying don't assume what the drummer is playing at a specific time is what's played on the record. Even if they accurately perform the song during the filming it's edited so the parts may not line up.
