Awesome walk! The old shop you wondered about in Albion was from the 1920s. It used to be a bakery, and in building behind there's a heritage listed bread oven, which had to be preserved as part of the new apartment developments. I used to live in the old baker's house behind this shop, prior to it being redeveloped.

@@walkaboutwithrob My uncle lived for some time in a house in New Farm, arguably as big as Newstead House. I would have been maybe 11 at the time? It had been converted into a 'Single man' boarding house. The manager apparently lived in the servant quarters at the rear of the house. A few months after our first visit to the place, it mysteriously burned down. A very large apartment complex now sits on the remains of that place. Kinda like Cloudland, I guess.

Hi Rob, great videos of the local areas of Brisbane. Man! you must love walking..... At 13:30 Sandgate road ended, the original road continued up right in front of the Breaky Creek pub then turned right at the Breakfast Creek bridge. The Hale street drama near Lang Park and the ICB was built about 2000/2001. The construction covered that section of Sandgate road and a plaza at the front of the pub and and underpass for traffic. 16:40 Not sure if you've been reading my comment floods but the Capri hotel is located on the same block as that building I worked in when I was 15. The dress factory supplied Sunnygirl, and many other fashion outlets in Brisbane and beyond. It was an old timber and steel, 2 (or was it 3?) storey firetrap. The owner and manager's offices were on the first floor, and the factory that was employing 50 or more seamstresses was on the top floor, as was the packing and despatch area where I worked. If you can imagine one of those photos from the 40s showing rows upon rows of girls working at sewing machines? This factory was as if the 40s had been warped into the late 70s. We brought our fabric deliveries up via an old wooden freight elevator. The only advancement made on the elevator was that an electric motor had been fitted to it probably at around the same time electricity came to Brisbane. The contrast was that it was an almost derelict-looking building and the boss parked his 1960s (read: newish) Rolls Royce out the front.

@Brad Griffin yes indeed reading all your comments. Great to learn about your memories from so many different areas of Brissy. It's a wonder that old building you discussed here didn't catch fire.

@@walkaboutwithrob You and me both, Rob. Our pattern copier was on the same floor. A giant Roneo(?) machine that spewed ammonia gas. It was in a room separated from the factory floor with a set of push out windows. The only ventilation. If the wind was blowing into the building, the ammonia fumes would drift into the factory. There was a no smoking rule on the floor that was ignored by newbies. The long term staff knew the danger. A room full of microscopic fabric threads and poorly maintained electrical systems. Yeah it was a powder keg. Apparently, before I started there, they had moved from Queen Street down near Edward Street. Rather than pay together the equipment moved, he had the girls wheel all the sewing machines on dolly's up Queen Street and down to the 'new' factory in Albert Street. We're talking around 50 industrial sewing machines plus all the associated equipment. I so wish home video was more popular back then. What a procession!

20:00 When we came back from Perth in the mid-seventies, friends of mum and dad put us up at their place in Annerley while mum and dad went house hunting (we ended up at Strathpine). I went to school at the Junction Primary for a few weeks until they decided where they were buying. I then spent the next few months catching the bus from Roma Street to Strathpine and back every day for school. None of the kids at Strathpine believed I lived in Annerley and caught the bus to school from the city every day. I think they lived in Florence Street. He was a milkman but also had a bulk paper run for The Courier mail when the printery was still running in Bowen Hills. I got to get an inside look at the presses when they were running back in the mid-seventies. That place never stopped. No sooner was one paper run finished, the stencils would be swapped out and another paper had its run.

7:15 The old Sandgate Road went through the centre of Nundah there (as you'd have seen) and comes out beside Toombul shopping centre. There used to be a hardware store diagonally opposite the Prince of Wales Hotel. Some 'mates' of mine borrowed my car one day, and while stopped at the lights, jumped out and stole a petrol water pump from out front of it. I lived in a flat in Union Street, just down the road from there for a while. Mal Meninga's girlfriend lived downstairs. 14:40 I can remember the Hamilton/Teneriffe area when it was still industrial. The gas tanks were still there. The wool stores were almost derelict. You couldn't give land away down there apparently. I look at it now, and having delivered groceries into most of the apartment complexes in the area, it is astounding how it has become gentrified. Yet, in the middle of all that restored to opulence architecture, is a functioning sand dredging and gravel supply operation.

It's pretty frustrating that Johnson Road (where you finished the video) is shared between Brisbane City and Logan councils. It's a VERY congested road, historically there's been many deadly accidents and yet both councils refuse to take any responsibility. Upgrades only happen when private land is developed so it's still only a single lane in both directions for most of its length, unfortunately.

My uncle bought a derelict ferry that was moored in Brekky Creek many years ago. Dad was helping him refurbish it. I remember being there one night throwing bread into the water. The creek was a maelstrom of catfish fighting for the morsels I was throwing. They took it out into the river one day and it couldn't power against the tide. In fact, when they turned it, it almost swamped itself. They eventually got it onto a dry dock and found the hull was almost completely eaten by worms, and there was algae and other stuff growing on the hull that had metre long strands. Not sure what happened to that thing. They nicknamed it the 'African Queen'.

Pretty much, however our public transport is probably better than the US. A lot of the population here has the "Australian dream" which is basically the same as the American dream, big house in the suburbs, sitting in traffic for hours to go to work and getting mad when a sky scraper is proposed, even for buildings with dense residential housing. Big American pick-up trucks are also getting popular here. There's even a new proposal to reintroduce trams to the Brisbane CBD and all the questions were, "Where are all the cars gonna drive?" like that's the point, get on the tram lol.
