@Gael4ce

That, and to quote Geoff when he discussed this recently “it’s just not a good deal”. Like, they offer all this salary up front and it sounds impressive, but then the label deducts all expenses from whatever they pay. So they pay for everything from production to advertising to legal fees to travel to …well, literally every dime that putting that recording out comes out of the pay to the artist. It’s so upside down that the contract could offer you half a mil and you end up owing when all is said and done. And then the label takes a big chunk of any profits too. Now, compare that to their current set up. They have enough patreons to mostly (if not completely) cover the production (largely because they do so much themselves) and whatever profits show up are theirs. Plus they answer to no one but themselves and their patreons.

Just a heads up, if you ever watch something Voiceplay again - if you look in their description it tells you who the guys are... Layne (the Vocal Percussionist) is joint owner of Pattycake Productions with Voiceplay's former Baritone Tony Wakim. Geoff, their bass, and Layne are founding members of the original band. Eli (Elly) their Tenor joined in 2010 and was on The Sing Off with them (and Tony and their former Tenor 1 Earl) and is INCREDIBLE. And then their newest member is Cesar de la Rosa (the guy with the fluffy hair) who joined them mid-2021. Funnily enough, Omar Cardona was Cesar's roommate, is one of his best friends and recently was a finalist on The Voice in America...so technically he is the "most famous" of them... PS. I'm now subscribed to your channel because...your reactions to Voiceplay (and Geoff) have made their way onto the Voiceplay Patreon Discord server...🤭

Eli is pronounced (Ellie) and rhymes with jelly. Layne is (Lane). Singing in the dragon language, and the special effect to the dragon shout "Fus Ro Dah!". It's Geoff doing the runs up and down, and Layne is the beatboxer. You need to treat yourself and go listen to their cover of the HALO theme. Vocal gymnastics. It's a tribute to a friend listen to the description at the end by Scott Porter. Geoff is dropping The Sound Of Silence this morning. I can't wait.

YAAAAAAAAS!! You don't know how happy this has made me, to watch your reaction to this. I think one of the reasons we enjoy watching reactors like you is because you can only experience a song or video for the first time once. But you gave us that same feeling as our first time watching it. So thank you 💜 honestly you can't go wrong with anything from voiceplay or geoff, it's all amazing. Look out for a new song and video from both geoff and voiceplay soon! 😉 Also, you don't pause too much. You are a reactor, you're supposed to pause. The ones who make comments about that are the small minority of all of us, so keep doing what you're doing 💜 looking forward to more reactions my man! They are known as the theatre kids of acapella which is so fitting because, for every video, they take the time to make the set, get the costumes (whether it is simple or extravagant like this video), and make up. Their Patreon is well worth joining. Aside from the normal things like early access to videos and mp3 tracks, they do monthly chats where they answer questions with all of them, as well as a monthly chat with just one. For example, Eli answering questions about how he does the lighting and a zoom call with Layne while he was arranging We Don’t Talk About Bruno. And perhaps the best of all, they open a feed into their video recording sessions, so we can be a fly on the wall, watching everything from makeup to the actual recording. At times they aren’t busy, they’ll come over and talk with us. The patrons just got a copy of their next release last night. It’s not a video game, but you won’t want to miss it. Omar was recently on the US The Voice. Being British I didn't get to see who won but he should have done, he has a beautiful voice. FYI Cesar was wearing actual chain mail weighing something like 20 lbs. It was so heavy on his shoulders he had to lie on the floor between takes to give himself a break. Ah, so it isn't only the ladies who get twitchy. LOL That's Omar with the "angel" voice. Geoff (Jeff) with the bass as you know. Cesar has lots of hair. Layne (Lane) is the beatboxer. Eli (elly) is wearing a hood. They should be all named in the credits. Please don't recover. Theyll never let you down. And of course they are carefully chosen to blend together both in voice and personality. Layne is the drum kit, Geoff is the bass arpeggios. That's what you can hear. Drums and bass are the backbone of any group, vocal or instrumental, and Geoff and Layne have been singing together since middle school. That's a lot of years of getting it together.

First time seeing any of your reactions and absolutely loved it! I'm a huge TES nerd myself - Played Skyrim for a thousand hours or more, still playing ESO (vastly different experience) and doing Oblivion for the first time. Can't wait for the 6th one - All that to say, I had the exact same reaction as you the first time they started singing Dovahzul and the shout! Love this group so much and the thing I love the most is that when they dive into an arrangement, they don't just do a cover for the sake of making a cover, they try to pay homage to where it came from and the people that love it, while still making it their own. It's a hard balance but they manage it really well. As a fun sidenote - You might already have learned who's who thanks to the other comments, but I haven't seen anyone mention that Eli and Omar (the tenors) also play Skyrim! Omar has a twitch where he streams gaming stuff sometimes, and Eli has considered starting a youtube channel though I don't know if he would do gaming or if he's planning something else. We're trying to (gently) push him into getting it up and running soon! Eli is also the one who animated the shout and sometimes does background animations or voice-overs. Really everyone in the group is great at a wide range of skills. Amazing reaction again, very excited to see more! I always love seeing the first time people are introduced to them, so I'll be going 'round checking your other videos in a moment 😁

You're just getting started, man. Hang on, enjoy the ride. Yes, Geoff and Layne are the only original members left. And the group has been one permanent member short since COVID/2020. But they know where the talent is, and who to bring in. Since they couldn't tour anyway, may as well have guest artists (possibly functioning as auditioners as well). Omar has guested with them four times. His brother E.J. Cardona, who otherwise performs with the larger acapella group Voctave, has guested once, on Go The Distance.

Adding to my own note. This is about Geoff's solo channel. He just now dropped a cover of Sounds of Silence. He has only one vid over there with guest artists, and one or two where he uses just his own voice with no layering. Everything else is multitracked, and with his extra selves (the Geofftones) on camera. Sounds of Silence is a new visual technique for him. He's using multitracking, but doesn't show multiple images of himself. Also, starting at V.3, he's made some creative rearrangements. I think that vid is going to be big. Might wanna get in on the ground floor with a reaction.

My first Voiceplay experience was Oogie Boogie song from Nightmare before Christmas, I've been hooked ever since! I really recommend it and their Little Mermaid Medley for some fun (Geoff is great as Ursula), also love My mother told me..aaand the list goes on. Down the rabbithole we go 😁

The "literal angel" is Omar. I also called him an angel when I first saw this one. They're all amazing, but Omar's voice is so tender and beautiful here. From first to sing they are Geoff (who you know), Cesar (the newest member of the group), Omar (the guest singer and literal angel), Eli (pronounced Ellie) and then Layne who is the vocal percussionist (pronounced Lane)

Pattycake is owned by Layne Stein (pronounced Lane) and Tony Wakim. Layne and Geoff are founding members of VP and have sung together since middle school. Tony is a former member of VP (hear Tony solo in Phantom of the Opera). Layne is the percussion ( he's a man of many talents as you'll learn). Layne and Geoff split the arrangement duties. Usually, whoever does the arrangement does the video and everything else. Increasingly over the last couple of years, Eli (L-eee) is doing the lighting, effects, visuals. The "literal angel" is Omar - he was also with them for Dream On, which you will LOVE. Usually the featured singer is in the center.

This is actually a mashup of two songs. The Dragonborn Comes is sung by bards in the game. (You can actually request it). That’s the quieter part they start and end with. The more dramatic part with the drums (well, Layne being drums) and the Dovah language is the main Skyrim theme. And lol at your reaction to Eli (sounds like Jelly without the J). He has the most amazing power and control - when you listen to “Nothing Else Matters”, pay attention to when he breathes. He does the most amazing long piece on one breath that is just power from start to finish. I love when he cuts lose and belts these impossible high notes that just last forever. FYI: both Eli and Cesar are gamers. 😊 Also FYI: If you like their music enough to want to buy it….patreons get the MP3s free. All of them. Including the back catalogue. It’s a damn good deal. I’d recommend joining at a higher level though. At least so you can see the monthly chats they do. You get to learn so much more about their work process. At the 50 dollar mark (I think it’s actually 45) you get to ask questions. And the behind-the-scenes videos are usually a riot. I dropped some tv streaming services over the pandemic to be able to afford a higher VP tier: They give me more entertainment for my money.

Layne Stein is the beat boxer and Geoff is the bass guitar you hear doing those scales. They haven't toured since the pandemic. They don't have a record label so they do everything themselves. First guy is Geoff, second guy is Cesar DeLarosa, third is Omar Cardona and lastly but not least Layne Stein.😊

Yeah, that's Geoff doing the arpeggio and Layne doing the beatboxing. Everyone in this group is multi talented, but they do also layer sometimes. Layne is pronounced like lane and Eli is pronounced like Ellie. (Rhymes with jelly). Cesar is the one in the chainmail with the elf ears. A Cesar/Geoff harmony is my favorite! Omar is crazy good. He was on The Voice last season. This one is top 5 for me!

Hoist the Colours, Nothing Else Matters, the Halo theme, Enemy, Dream On, Carry On Wayward Son, We Don't Talk About Bruno, My Mother Told Me, Man In The Mirror, Oogie Boogie's song--pick one, you won't be disappointed. (Fun fact: Cesar's chain mail that a couple of other commenters here have mentioned? It was so heavy that he had to lie down on the floor between takes.)

The 2nd voice is Cesar, followed by Omar, Eli next, Layne is the beat boxer. VoicePlay also did a video of the Halo theme and the VP commentary at the end will let you see photos of them as teenagers. Omar was on The Voice back in the fall and has been a regular guest on VP. Omar and Cesar are best friends. Layne is an amazing beat boxer, Geoff does guitar riffs by voice. I love this! Part of the reason they aren't on the radio is that they want to maintain the control and their creativity. I have heard them on the music track in my local Walmart. Somewhere in that store is a fan! No record contract/companies. One of the members from 8 or 9 years ago is Tony Wakim (one of his best is Phantom of the Opera) who wanted to get into productions, so he and Layne bought Pattycake Studios and a lot of VoicePlay and Geoff solos are done at the studio. So they have control of the studio, Layne and Geoff alternate on arrangement/video/costuming/stage setup/audio pre-mix. They hire in help that they need (see In The Hall Of The Mountain King where they brought in makeup and prosthetic talent).

This one was awesome, one of my absolute favourites from them. Played Skyrim on PS3/4/5/VR so was psyched when I realised they did this. Everyone-else already answered your questions re: VP, but I second the suggestions for you to watch My Mother Told Me! I love it just as much as their Skyrim cover. Another couple favourites of mine are This Is Halloween (it's just so fun to watch) and Oogie Boogie's Song (Geoff features pretty heavily in that one... with good reason). Honestly though, it's so difficult to narrow down suggestions when there's just so many good ones to choose from.

VoicePlay is my 2nd favorite a capella group. Home Free will always be my top group. Since they need to perform a lot of their songs live, while they can layer vocal percussion on a recording, on stage they use a looper if the percussionist is doing more than one instrument sound at a time. I know Adam Rupp, the percussionist for Home Free, uses it for Man Of Constant Sorrow when he's doing drums abd harmonica at ths same time. They also use it for their baritone, Chance, when he's imitating a jaw harp because the technique hurts his throat over a prolonged period. If they didn't loop it he wouldn't be able to sing during the rest of the concert.
