As a 2D Animator one rule I tend to follow is to not have the mouth and eyes of the character take up similar amounts of space on the face when trying to have the character show great expression, to pick one of the two to exaggerate but never both. Following this rule, to me it feels most natural to exaggerate the eyes and I definitely have a good sense of doing that to get an emotion across. Watching your stuff, especially this video, is a masterclass on how to express emotion by exaggerating the mouth. You do it so incredibly, and I'm taking notes out here.
