One of my friends lost his sr position at an agency. Myself and another friend helped create different profiles on job sites using different variations of my friend’s name and different emails, and created some profiles omitting some of his experience so that we could apply for entry level, mid level, and sr positions. We automated some of the process, but it took 16 months and 14k applications for him to receive 4 offers. 2 mid level and 2 sr level positions.

I've been at it 8 months. About 1% human response rate to cold mass applications + networking. Handful of interviews to speak of. Zero offers. 25 years in computer tech (comp science) across general IT, development and CX. it's insane, though I know age is not on my side. I just applied to Costco today as a stock boiii. 18/hr is better than zero. That's after applying to BJ's, Target, Walmart, Best Buy and Starbucks -- and I'd been in corporate life my entire career. Needless to say these menial jobs don't want me either because I don't have any similar experience, I'm old, I'm expensive & they're convinced I wouldn't be staying. (They're not wrong.) It's wild.

I agree $18 is less then zero. I suggest if you're under 35, consider civil service. Maybe sherif dept, fire dept, or get a cdl ( passenger) and drive a city bus. You'd be surprise how much you can earn considering you need limited education and the pension is quite good. State jobs are also good. I would love to do that but I was downsized, and at 56 I was aged out. I was blessed with a union job, hourly is decent bit the medical is great snd I can't be forced out. Remember, city, state jobs are secure. They offer great benefits and decent pension. God bless.

It likely means he's familiar with scrum, kanban, and general tech/management stuff while being familiar with various charts, making presentations to leadership, etc. They are middle management between the engineers and execs. I won't say the job isn't useful or necessary like some because it is, and someone who is good at it can make a difference, but it is also a job that isn't hard to learn, and companies will often promote people internally into these kind of roles. An engineer who is tired of the code grind and has a lot of soft skills + knows all this stuff from being a part of it and knows the company internals is often going to be a better fit than an external hire, since they will actually be able to tell if their team is BSing them. I've seen those without that background falter because what they are managing is magic to them.

I've just caught up on your story and I can definitely sympathise. It's by far the toughest time I've seen in the market. I've had long job searches before but usually I'd at least get the chance to interview. I've had some truly baffling moments this time around. Recently got referred for a job by a friend. I had twice the experience they were looking for and had specialized in the tiny niche they needed for the last 8 years but got an automated rejection. I'm fairly certain my CV never got to the actual person hiring but I'll never know for sure. I think the worst part of it is getting no feedback whatsoever, because you don't know if it's just some AI filtering you out or a genuine concern that you could address. Anyway, best of luck with the search. I know it might seem like you've put in a lot of effort to get into an industry that's not working, but hopefully it's another door that's open to you in future.

Jeremy as a PM you dont have to stick to Tech Jobs, why not looking for other industries like medical, automotive, aerospace, etc??? My advise is if you are going to shift away from tech, then do so and if you get a job on another industry do not keep looking and searching for tech jobs because that will cause three things: 1 - You will become miserable counting every single day until you can get back into tech. Rather advance your career and build your resume, show your flexibility in your CV, that you are able to manage projects for any type of company. 2 - From the company side you will have wasted the companies resources and time which they could have invested in other candidate. So don't be that guy. 3 - You will burn the bridge with that company forever The flexibility of PMs again is that projects are everywhere. Chances of stability on another industries are way higher. Keep your head up, you will eventually land a job either in a tech company or on another industry

@Life_with_Jeremy3 ай бұрын
Thankfully got a job in Product Management again, but this is a good question. I focused on getting a job in PM because the market was super tough and me trying to pivot to a different tech role would have me competing with people who already have experience in those roles looking for a job. In terms of completing pivoting out of PM and tech, I could see that being a viable option for someone if that's a route they want to pursue and avoid the uncertainty that comes with tech.
