There is a case of a Japanese kamikaze pilot; if the mission is a foul, come back to try again. This happened something like 5-6 times with one guy that on take-off they wrote him dead, repeat and then spent 30or more years 'dead' (which meant no benefits, bank account, work, veteran pay etc)

The soldiers are being trained to fight against humans, because except for the bugs, they still have to fight humans from time to time. And before the bugs came, that's all they had to fight. Johnny was only hurt in the leg by the bug. We can surmise that the bug that attacked him was probably killed before it got to him. But he only got wounded in the leg. Since it was such an unexpected mass slaughter, like with real war, it was hard to keep track of who lived and who died. *Thank you Louis!*

There are misreports of soldiers dying in war. It happens. I have, personally, known a man whose parents were given a telegram that he was killed in action, during WWII. They later got a telegram saying he wasn't dead, but wasn't expected to make it. A month later, they got another message saying he was wounded, but was going to be ok. So odd things do happen in the confusion right after battle.

one of the best movies I've seen (with two insanely cheap sequels). interesting fact: in the book, people use combat costumes similar to that of the iron man,and insects are also a technologically advanced civilization. But both are dropped in the film due to lack of budget for the necessary effects.
@15blackshirt2 жыл бұрын
Much like with RoboCop and Total Recall, this is a satire of many different social, political and other topics by Paul Verhoeven; this is loosely adapted from the novel of the same name by science fiction writer and US Navy veteran Robert A Heinlein, which I vastly prefer to this film; other military/war films and series you should check out are 13 Hours, Lone Survivor, Act of Valor, Black Hawk Down, Full Metal Jacket, Shooter, Tears of the Sun, Top Gun, Battle Los Angeles, The Pacific and Generation Kill
@tommy56752 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, I read the book before the film was made and when the film came out i was quite disappointed at just how loose the film is to the book. I've learnt to like the film over the years, but that disappointment of what the film could have been if it was more faithful to the book is still there.
@15blackshirt2 жыл бұрын
@@tommy5675, Robert A Heinlein and Paul Verhoeven have polar opposite views on a number of things, especially militaries in general, so the film was never going to be faithful to the novel; this film also borrows heavily from Star Wars and Aliens, while the novel was written in the late 1950's, so it had plenty of originality to it; I'm a veteran myself, so this film joins a long list of others I very much dislike

@@15blackshirt I've just turned 44, Veteran indeed :D :D :D :D. I grew up in a house surrounded by 50/60/70s Sci-fi and fantasy books, there were piles. When i was really young the covers grabbed me, the a bit older i tried to read them, but the concepts were a bit too far out, but by the age of 10 i was really getting into it. Herbert, Asimov, Clarke, Aldiss, Moorcroft, McCaffrey, Dick, Tolkien, Heinlein, Andersen , Silverberg, Niven, Hubbard.....The list goes on, I grew up with quality Stories in my life and was somewhat spoilt. One of the first books i remember the story and actually reading it is a Heinlein book called "Glory Road". I've never gone back to it as i don't want to sully my childhood memories as i really enjoyed it and i don't want to find out it was a poor story/book. As for this film, If it wasn't called Star Ship Troopers I might have been more on board back in the day. But I've learnt to see it for the tale it is and not the one i wanted it to be.......however i do believe the book to be a much better story and cannot fathom why they changed so much of it.

I saw this film, and it's the ultimate satire on war movies, as director Paul Verhoeven despised war considering that he was born the same year Hitler took over the Third Reich. He read the novel, but stopped reading it half way through. He called it boring and was written for right wing nut jobs. The original title was Big Hunt On Outpost Nine, which was then turned into StarShip Troopers. Verhoeven hated the novel as it promoted Militarism, Facism, Xenophobia, military rule and propaganda. The film was released November 7, 1997, 5 weeks before TITANIC was released. It made $122 million dollars against a $105 million dollar budget. It received mixed reviews by Critics and was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to TITANIC. It's now Considered to be a cult classic.

The Director of this film is Paul Verhoeven, who is well known for his choice of satirical violence, most notoriously from Robocop(1987) and Total Recall(1990) When Starship Troopers originally came out, it recieved alot of negative reviews. Cinema critics found it corny, and regular movie goers thought is silly. Both sides of the coin did not see the fortuitous social commentary the French Director was making on blind American patriotism. The film however has increasingly grown in popularity over the years and critic are finally seeing the film for what it truly is, a cleverly placed satire hidden amongst a popcorn Sci-Action movie. The sequels however were not made by the same Director and were basically straight-to-DVD B-Grade movies.
