I've mentioned this before in another comment section, but it bears repeating, I got this from one of Ross' dancers way back when. Ross was asked to close the Apollo show and originally declined. She had a matinee performance in Atlantic City and didn't see how should could make it. The producers of the Apollo TV special hired a helicopter to bring her to New York just to end the show. Ross was sentimental about the Apollo, she and the Supremes sang there when they were just starting out, and the producers really really wanted her. So she did it. But she'd already done a full show and was, as they say in the business, out of voice . So, she saw Patti and HANDED her the mic. Patti didn't steal it. There was no cat fight or diva duel. These women are not only friends, they're pros.

Diana Ross is so phenomenal with her facial expressions and the tempo of the song. Then Patti comes out to show off by screaming and yelling like a flock of geese and totally ruins it for me, leaving me with a splitting headache. Sometimes less is so much more and Miss Ross really proves that in the way she sings so beautifully and the way she delivers a song with so much purity and heart. and that does not always take yelling and screaming like someone being stabbed to death. This is my take on Diana versus Patti....Berry Gordy knew that the time had come-there were changes everywhere, SO, naturally he tailored Diana and the Supremes to sing standards that were likeable to the masses, at which point he could inject some of the HDH melodies. It took time to do, but by the time she was on her own, at Ceasar's in the 1970's, she was a mega star who even then, did some Broadway standards to keep her influence in the mainstream, and LSTB (Lady Sings) numbers for her new fans. As the fan base got younger and the older fans died, she abandoned the standards and concentrated on her huge hits. Whether this was a conspiracy on Berry's part I do not know, BUT I do know that Patty, despite her enormous talent, did NOT have a BG guiding her career-and let's face it, the MOTOWN machine at that time was huge. So I don't fault her at all for taking no prisoners as it were-she had limited vocal ability but it was surpassed by the glamour, the nails, the gowns and of course the hair, which Patty simply did not have.

I like both Diana and Patti and they have very different voices. Some songs are better suited for Diana others for Patti but contrary to many of the opinions on here, I was loving Diana's sound on this song. The hoarseness (no doubt she had a cold) added an intetesting layer to what is usually a soft and pristine voice. Diana called her up but I thought Patti ruined it. That song didn't need all that screaming and all those rifts. While I love a good loud belt and soaring screams, they don't work on every song and Diana's earnest, melodic touch worked much better to me.
