I feel this one. The other day we got our first good rain in the mountains outside of Chiang Mai and the smoke was cleared. I go out for a bike ride in the evening and it looks like the fire bombing of Tokyo 1945. Plumes of smoke coming out of virtually every house as they burn everything they've been storying up over the last few months. This got me in a sour mood as I watched them ruin the air once again. Then I get further out and the mountains are still completely burned all along the road side and now stink of soggy ash. Nice job guys. Fuming now I start to notice the obscene amount of trash they throw all over the side of the roads which is now exposed since all the grass is burned. So ok Northern Thailand is beautiful when it goes right but they work so hard to destroy it and make our lives miserable at times. I feel better today but it makes me feel the same way. Don't want to live with these people and feel like going home to save my sanity because it's all going to happen again next year.

Every year you can see the trash, as the jungle thins towwards the end, of summer. Peak of rainy season the new growth envelopes it and everything is pretty. I hate late May every year, best to be overseas at that time.

As a long-term sufferer of medicated depression and anxiety, I'd like to say that the only good thing about a bad day is that the next good day is that little bit closer. As for "going somewhere else", think of all the bollox involved in arranging the move for it to be EXACTLY THE SAME where you choose to go.

I don't watch the channel regularly but here are my thoughts. 1. Are you working at all? It's good to keep yourself busy and work outside of the house (remote work from inside the home can make you antsy and takes away from having social interactions with colleagues/clients). 2. Do you speak Thai? I could not live there without speaking the language. I would get too frustrated. 3. Lastly - Exercise early morning! 5 am is when all of the Thais are at the local park before the heat becomes too much.

Hi James, lived in Klong 4 just up the road from your daughter's uni for 20 years. Although worked as a Q.S and lived in 9 countries with my Thai wife, we eventually left in 2017, and now live in Sunny South Wales. In 2017, I reached the age of 62 and the heat and crap going on in Bangkok was doing my head in. Hence returning home for good. Although born and bred in Cardiff for 35 years, like what Annie said, I can't live any city anymore. Anyway James best of luck for the future.

Great video Mr James! This could be an ad for the DJI P 3 CC with the excellent video & audio in this video - the auto tracking feature is impressive. This item goes for $669 here in USA from Amazon, in case you were second guessing that purchase. Re. the tailgating when driving, this is the daily bane of my existence. I'm regularly followed by less than one car length at 50 mph (80 kph). One thing that has really turned me off to the idea of moving to TH is the terrible air pollution. You are in the worst of it in N TH, I'd have to live down Phuketgrad way to tolerate it. Some other long time TH YTers are clearly concerned about the tax situation and have taken to spending lots of time outside TH just in case. Like you, I'm also fighting ants around the house. Many common irritants, just on the other side of the planet. Thank you and hang in there.

I'm in Isaan and struggle from time to to time, James. The heat this year has been really trying though, and the minor irritations seem to become more and more irksome, such as next door's dog who howls and barks at all hours of the night, the atrocious standard of driving on the roads being the main culprits. The main problem for me, I think, is the lack of any social interaction. Back home in the UK I have a small but good bunch of mates, I was also heavily involved in amateur sports as both a coach and official. I only made the move here full time because the hysterical reaction to covid meant I didnt see my Thai other half for almost two years. If she ran off with the milkman I'd be out of here. I go to the gym, run (even in the heat) and practice my guitar so I keep myself busy, but like you, I'm thinking of spending several months per year back home to catch up with family and friends, and just to feel part of society again. Oh, and to savour a decent pint of bitter!

Temps almost always 60-70f ..no bugs, ants, mosquitoes, No pollution clean air blue sky ..No Immigration , free health care yet we always think about moving back to Thailand. Why? well grass is greener likely but also Thailand has a vibe a constant thing to do atmosphere I guess. Great coffee shops etc etc etc We have a home there & spend the cool months there usually 2-3 months a year. But yes we always think about moving back 🤔 Hang in there & hey that DJI is super cool! Hi James, I know the feeling, the heat this year has been brutal. I have had to keep myself locked in an airconditioned room for the most part too. I have had a few health issues because of the heat which hasn't helped either. Definitely a good idea to try and give the beer a miss, at least the just drinking for the sake of drinking, when at home alone. I hope you do some hotel reviews. One of the aspects of your channel that I like the most (and, apparently, all the Thai-focused channels are by, and for, “the gentlemen “ so perhaps not too many female subscribers like myself) is how stylishly your house is decorated. It looks the way I imagine my house would look, and, overall, from YT videos, the SE Asian design aesthetic leaves a lot to be desired. So, you have a good eye and would probably give honest, enjoyable hotel reviews. Keep going! You have a good channel.

I get your need to step away from Thailand for a moment, though I am looking to move back again. 😊 Have you considered looking into a central/South American country? There are a few nice choices but finding the right one for you that could be a nice balance for spending a few months in while you step away from Thailand. Find the right spot and it won’t brake the bank. First few trips could be to figure out where you like, figuring out what won’t trigger tax residence as well, I know foreigners in Thailand are now needing to figure out how the new (or redefining) tax rules will affect them. Good luck!! I do enjoy your videos … keep things up … cheers

The hotels idea is great - maybe do low, medium and high end in places like Buriram, Udon, Khon Kaen, Sukothai, Ayyutayah etc (a lot of folk would be interested to see that ) I think moving for 6 months is also not a bad idea or at least try it once. i totally get how you feel about the heat, pollution, tax.........and what is going to come next? thats the problem here. I have recently bought a house in Hua Hin, just outside, so the air is pretty good, but still not great. Its a great plan to get out of here during the burning and hot season. More for you than me, because of your northern location. Remember that we can only spend 3 months in any six month period in an EU country. So 6 months in Portugal might not be allowed. If the tax comes in, for sure, I will be out of here for 6 months and 1 day each year. 3 months in Spain probably, depends on the rental prices, and PH or Vietnam probably for the other 3 months. Would you take your wife and Annie with you if you do leave evey year? I discussed this with my gf, she is up for it, but travel costs affordability could be a problem.

This guy seems to be quite well off. His home makes my wife and our 2 bedroom home look like a poor peoples hovel. I use the one bedroom as my man cave with my computer and jungle of wires for my solar systems. I didn't build the solar systems to save money, I built them because of the very poor electrical grid out here in the boonies. It goes off at least every second day. It usually comes back on fairly quickly but sometimes is off for several hours. And YES, it is very hot this season but my man cave has an air conditioner. I only have to endure the heat when I go outside. I am a confirmed introvert and find it difficult to get bored and am quite content with my life out here in the boonies upcountry.

This was one of the most entertaining videos you have made. Just down to earth daily struggles in life. All the things that happened to you in the video would be replaced by typical unique annoyances in any other country. Tailgating is worldwide. Happens to me on an almost daily basis. You know the grass is not always greener on the other side Mr James. Lol So we have been doing a 50 50 split between Thailand and the USA during the hot season/ monsoon we are in the states. One thing I am wondering, if you choose doing the spilt, who will watch and take care of your house? Hopefully a dependable relative or friend.

I have also thought the scenario when pensioning in a couple of years, about splitting the time in Thailand with a place in Europe, Spain or Portugal that is, nice climate for the time outside Thailand when the season there is too hot. Turning to Europe from April to Septemper, and Thailand October to March... another + would be that for us in the EU we still carry health insurance as in our home country, Denmark for my part, for the 6 months, and then cheap and easy to get an extended travel insurance for the time in Thailand compaired to the rather expensive insurances in Thailand, IMO. Thanx for sharing your daily live, ups and downs, much appreciated..

Advice from another tropical paradise… Terro / boric acid kills some ants. I recently learned cornmeal kills ghost ants, they eat it but can’t digest it. Just be careful how you leave it out / poke holes in a cover or you will have roaches 🤣 Things will get better. It was 102 on my porch at 4pm yesterday out of the sun, and 90 on my porch most of last night. Too hot and getting hotter every year sadly. Find more positivity. Happy music, happy people, do things where you can see positive progress. Find some way to separate from the bad stuff as much as you can. You can do this!

Why don't you and Annie consider coming to Aus as opposed to Portugal, maybe a lot closer, AQI is 25 today in Sydney and we are in Autumn, but next month is Winter so it does get cold in the Southern States. For what it's worth mate I don't think the channel is in a rut at all, I always enjoy the content whatever you're putting out, I really enjoyed this video although I'm sorry to hear it's been a bit hard yards recently. But don't worry about your content, it's always worth a watch because you're just a very personable bloke. And you don't owe us lot anything at the end of the day, you don't have a patreon or flog bob the bush merch. Although you probably should, I'd buy a bob the bush branded step ladder or something. Or at least the knock off version of your merch cheap on Lazada which I think you'd actually appreciate 😂. But anyway, as far as I know you haven't even monetized the channel so it's just a way of you documenting your life, subscribers ain't paying customers if they don't like it they know where there can go. All that being said your hotel review series with Annie sounds like a fun Idea mate. Finally although we've never met and I could be Martha from Baby Reindeer for all you know not the Scottish bloke living in Hong Kong for the last 30 years I claim to be - if you ever fancy a mini break here hit me up. I'm retired now so I can show you around while my missus brings home the bacon like the progressive/lazy sod I am. James what happened? I tried to put myself in your position; what would I do? Here are my answers (in no particular order) i) continue to learn Thai (think you'd said your written and reading Thai needs improvement. Why don't you learn how to read/write?), ii) informally teach spoken Thai / English, possibly for free. iii) involve myself in the community - though this may focus around a temple (I am not religious) I would not have to participate in prayer sessions. I would (if my spoken skills were as good as yours) possibly be involved in local government or an environmental group ([particularly to stop the practice of burning - I would involve a university for scientific back up). iv) develop a routine (I get the impression you might not have one - a reason to get out of bed and one to make you tired enough get back in it!). v) repair and build stuff (I'm fairly handy). vi) Limit mixing with ex-pats (because I guess very little new is learnt as they all have similar lives (but your speaking skills could help massively here) vii) grow more in your garden (but get a rainwater harvesting system first - this would have also helped with the fire problem you had while ago), viii) work online (other than YT, are there any UK/US/NZ/Aussie co.s which could use your skills? This would keep you busy for at least two days a week), It seems that the little irritating things in your life are having a significant impact only because you don't really have 'real' stuff to worry about. I might also add that I would buy only what I truly need. Regular online purchases give a 'buzz' for a short time which is almost an unhealthy addiction. Why not buy a second property and Air BNB it? You could also use it for a portion of the year. Here's an idea - 'Chat for a beer' - real time 30 mins max Q & A chats with people (like me) who want to do what you've done, all for the price of a Chang (it wouldn't be obligatory to actually drink the beer!). If you were to do this you'd chat with some great (and probably also some awful!) people just as you might in a bar but you are bound to learn something (other than 'don't chat with strangers in bars!'). There's no opinion or criticism here, just thoughts on what I might do in your situation, with the hope that saying it might help. Anyhoo, hope you're feeling more upbeat for the next video. Take good care of yourself.

Thanks for the suggestions Andy. I'm ok just things got to me a bit. I did amplify things a bit for the video , but many feel the same way this year. All the best mate.👍

Regarding the tax thing , not too sure if you know but you can gift either your wife or your daughter up to 20million baht per yr tax free per calender yr . I just transferred 3 million last week had the wife go of to the revenue dept to see if anything was due . 0 Baht was owed .

Yes, I've read about that. I'm still not sure if it even affects us. nobody seems to know even though there are those that say they do. We'll see what happens. 👍

Cheers. Very difficult to do because no one really knows exactly what's happening. Maybe when things become more clear I'll make a video. All the best 👍
