In this interview from late 2019 Jack Miller explains what goes into winning a MotoGP race in the modern era. With more data available than every before, how hard it is to just be a racer who is focused only on racing the motorcycle? And is it a disadvantage compared to riders that are heavily focused on the data side of the sport.

What he's describing is one of the most beautiful things about motorcycle racing. Unlike car racing, where the data can trump the driver and the engineer knows best, in motorcycle racing of any kind the engineer never knows best and the data does not trump everything the rider knows. Because you could have all the data in the world that your bike can perform better than anyone else's but if the rider isn't feeling it the bike won't even cross the line.

It's great for everyday riders, atleast some things like traction control will make it super difficult to step out on a weekend cruise but for a racer I think less is better, I want my clutch and throttle to be my traction control like on my motocross bike, I don't want mine to "de tune" itself in certain situations. I don't use my traction control on starts either, I hate it... I don't like the rear holeshot device either, just on the fork. I do like different map options if it's hard pack with more wheel spin tone down the throttle response but when it's chocolate cake I want it aggressive and always right there with more top end over Rev, I ride all my bikes like a 2 stroke, I never could lug a bike unless it was my 300Xcw in the woods for technical rocky hillclimbs, otherwise I'm agressive like I'm on a 125, thats why 450s don't fit my style, I can't ride a 450 like that, it's just too much even as a decent local A rider and AA in enduro. I want the new electric bike, it won't be as good in sand without that rotating mass but it'd be awesome everywhere else. I'll always have my Eric Gorr built 125&250 2 strokes and a 350 4 stroke but electric would be sick, instant torque no matter when you want it and no noise so no worrying about neighbors or going incognito to go poach a a public spot, that'd the best part, Hill has got me dying to go hit stuff around my place in oklahoma haha. I found a sick road gap over the highway I think would work, I haven't seen the actual face to know for sure but from the road it looks like it'd be perfect, just some shoveling after a rain.. this red clay is like concrete when it dries out

Jacks results keep frustrating. I am thinking looking at those lines may just be the difference. A rider is no engineer, but the way he describes it is not how I seen the best riders communicate with their chief engineer. "I want more grip", is not really making it easy for your engineer.

Not trying to be offensive but the best of the best riders/drivers are the ones who don’t only ride/drive they are the ones who also deeply engaged in developing it. There is a saying, “you can teach a monkey to ride a bike but let’s see you teach him to fix it.” Something along those lines.

Great interview mate, very genuine back and forth between the two. Usually interviews are plastic and fake. Jack’s observation of the Spanish riders is interesting. Shows you how well he has done to make it to that level, especially in the moto3 days to get to the top quite quickly amongst kids who have been tutored from a very young age. Guess it goes for all non Spanish riders who do. I went to Spain in the late 90s and couldn’t believe how popular the sport was there. That was when there were only a few Spanish riders in the top class and the narrow cobblestone streets were full of two stroke 125s. They certainly ramped it up since then.

Miller is right, all the electronic interventions detract from the real thing. It is ridiculous and artificial to have so many parameters, even curve by curve, that don't even have the excuse of being relevant for daily riding. However, he should have said it loud and clear, as Stoner and Márquez did, to some extent. Both used close to no electronics, reportedly, whereas Miller apparently has a massive intervention to cut spin to a mere 5%! Stoner is the GOAT for me, Márquez wasn't far, 8 world titles. Miller... got lazy and complacent.
