My first sympathy for game characters was metal gear solid two. First playthrough of the beginning level as snake I'd "freeze" then shoot enemy soldiers with tranq gun. They'd be on the ground, and you'd see their breath in the cold air as they were dozing off. After chiding myself for playing so pacifist, I pulled out my gun (not tranq) and pointed it at a sleeping fella. A minute would pass and then I'd walk a bit away but kept coming back to the sleeping soldier. It took me about a half hour of deliberating and internal struggle before I shot that dude. And I felt BAD man.

I had a similar experience with the Hitman games. One instance, I decided to just randomly terrorize a crowd of innocents (as one do) and a singular npc talked me out of putting him down. Something about his mother dying and him being the only one left. It touched me. I have never went on a murderous rampage again in Hitman. The second instance was in a map where my target ran to the kitchen where an innocent lady was there cooking. Due to the nature of the game, and being on a god forsaken amount of attempts, I had to shoot her even as she pleaded so I could get away with killing the target. Those two events have embedded themselves into my mind. I rarely if ever kill innocents in Hitman games anymore.

That line not only could protect him if the assailant won’t hurt a future father, but will also protect his wife since the assailant won’t shoot a pregnant woman by this logic. Plus even if you still kill him, there is a high chance you will spare his wife because you believe she’s with child. That's a good man right there, I tell you what

The more grounded in realism the stronger the emotional impact. I remember the first time I knifed an npc who was nonthreatening I just wanted to steal or rob him. Didn't go as planned and just butchered him. The effect took me aback and felt slightly bad but then the journey continued but I've not forgotten that death

It did this animation, where it sort of stumbled where it stood, trying to keep itself upright how it's brain was telling it to in it's last moments. Then it took a step to the side and fell, it felt so fucking realistic I had to just pause my game and sit back in absolute horror at what I'd just done, because it really felt like how a living thing would react to being shot.. I don't know. It's beautiful in a way, the depth of the realism to make you genuinely terrified of what you've done. I'll never forget that poor horse.

The first person I opened fire on was Johnson Nash at which point his wife let out the most emotional, "What have you done?" Just the way she said it made me feel so bad. I had one of those "people asking for a ride but it's actually an ambush" encounters in RDO and I went along with it, getting off my horse, waiting for my characters hands to slowly raise up, then when this woman was an arms length from me in one swift motion - as quick as a hiccup - my character knocked her gun out her hand and slugged her. Knocked her clean out without a sound. I thought that was a great NPC encounter with how it all just went. Very movie-like

Red dead 2 is a master class in world building. It’s like everyone and everything links in to one another. When I randomly bump into a bum in an alley who’s a drunk, and pull a gun, and he grovels for his life and asks me to take pity on his hopeless existence… I seriously pause and wonder “why the hell would I shoot this man”. I then wonder, could I get away with it? Look around and see if a deputy is nearby, or frankly another person walking past who might take umbrage and say “hey, that my brother” or some random thing like that. I wonder how my own character, and world will react to my bad behaviour. In cyberpunk however I feel like everything is a mannequin. The NPCs seem like they spawned in moments before I rounded the corner. Like they are just shells, vocalising canned lines. I could turn my back, walk away, only to return moments later and they are gone. Replaced by someone totally different. Somehow the world of red dead feels like it carry’s on regardless of my presence. In fact if I turned it on now, after not having played it for something like 2 years, I’d wonder if the seasons had changed, or if Arthur’s beard had grown out, or someone in the camp had died. I’m not sure I’ve found a game since maybe Skyrim, that captured me and pulled my mind into the world more convincingly.

Appreciate the insane amount of work they put in the dialog and voice acting. If you've ever noticed while riding on your horse, if you get too far from the talking npc's, they will shout there lines seamlessly. This means they recorded every single conversation in the game twice over at minimum. Just for the sake of immersion. And if you know anything about acting. You'd know actors say the same line multiple times for the director to pick the best one. So thats 4-8 takes x 2-3 scripts back to back.

This and State of Decay both have great, very organic dialogue interruptions. In SoD, if you see enemies approaching during a conversation (or you're talking to someone on the radio and get into a fight), your character will say "Hold on," go fight, and then tell their conversation partner something along the lines of "Now, where were we?" It sounds simple but that was the first game I ever played where that happened. The way it's handled in RDR2 just feels like the more polished, sophisticated version of that system.

Extremely flammable. Watched another building just like it go down in like ten to fifteen. Total burn time was around 20 minutes by time the fire department got there. Lesson of the day: Fire safety. I remember coming across that line and then it just hit me outta nowhere bc I never really thought about it...it's all fun and games as we go on random killing sprees and such in these games but after I heard that line for the first time it made me feel really guilty bc I wondered how many other npc's I've just mindlessly slaughtered that could of had families so I usually try to go out of my way to let them live unless they really piss me off like trying to rob someone and they fight back so I lasso them tie them up, steal their stuff for the gang and then untie them and if they still attempt to fight me after I untie them then I'll shoot them because I gave them a chance to run away.

I mean watchdogs tried some way of humanizing every NPC by showing a quick blurb about them when targeted (because of your L33t hax0r skills you could see instahack all their social media and gather all that info in a second or something). It showed name, age, and a hobby or something about them I think. Even did it for enemies. Made me feel kinda bad when I skull-capped the gang members that had kids with leukemia and stuff like that, especially when the option to K.O them Batman style instead existed.

I was playing with a friend once and we were out hunting. I was going after this small deer and it tried to escape across a river, which was pretty deep. I managed to catch it with my lasso and as I closed the distance between us, reeling it in as the deer tried to escape, it turned its head and looked at me - the fear and panic in its eyes was legit so overwhelming that I felt like an asshole and let it go. It was one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had with a game. I know I saved that clip, but can't remember if I've posted it anywhere. In the "sequel/ prequel"(depending on how you look at it)Red Dead Redemption, I was after a bounty(which I always tried to capture alive as I think you got a bigger reward for bringing them back alive)and I managed to kill the entire gang and had the bounty hogtied. When I looked for my horse I noticed that it had been shot and killed. It was the first time I lost a horse(and I don't remember if I was even aware that your horse could die)and it got to me. So I executed the bounty and left his corpse to rot in the sun.

It's a really good game, but the things that *aren't* polished are incredibly distracting. Having long-ass missions where you can't save and the checkpoints are few and far between, meaning if I suddenly have to go into work or something I have to replay because I can't just leave the game on for hours. Autosave forcing itself off if you refuse to let it autosave. Randomly kicking tied up people you're trying to rescue. Randomly shooting people you're trying to talk to. The game randomly forcing itself into windowed mode, etc etc. Drives me insane. But the game is absolutely stellar when it's not doing this little things that make me angry.

Reminds me of the story from the set of Reservoir Dogs that when Michael Madsen went to light the cop on fire after the torture scene the guy was improvising and he said he had kids, please don't kill him. Madsen stopped the scene and got upset and they had to reshoot it from that point because the take was screwed up. He had just had kids and it made him too uncomfortable to even pretend to kill the guy after he said that.

Whats truly great about rdr2 is there is a lot of lore that takes place before the beginning of the game in 1899. The gang would throw the first 5000 dollars it made to poor ppl but later become about survival of the gang hosea would become disillusioned with the gang and author the same which is why during one mission he mentions he almost bought into dutches preaching about whats right.

I’ve been predicting that GTA 6 will have lots of stuff like this, shit that makes going on a kill spree in their games kind of disturbing. GTA 4 had a game feature where after you dealt enough damage to a cop, sometimes they wouldn’t die, they would just hobble away. Killing them felt evil. GTA 5 upped the ante in some ways, like how the cops drag other injured cops to cover. I’m actually a fan of this because I’ve always hated how GTA and Red Dead are misunderstood to a lot of people. Many people just see them as Postal-type games.
