Ok just to be clear, I understand that there are problems with terrorism in Kenya, and the police have a job to do. But I'm not cool with being detained for 4 hours and being treated like a criminal just for walking around with a camera. That's crazy. I wouldn't support the police grabbing random people off the streets in the US either, you can't run things like that

If you understood how serious terror was then you would not even walk around with a camera here. Even Kenyans don't walk with cameras everywhere.

I was detained my Tanzania immigration for a long time. They took my passport and held me for hours. All because I built a school and am a donor...they accused me of working in a school that losses 5 million tsh a month. It was crazy...they told me I had to pay $600 for a work permit. I was in Tanzania for only four weeks. I was lucky I know people in the labor dept and they told immigration that they are not responsible for people working illegally, they are. They know me and to set me free and give me my passport back. Stressful...I feel your pain

Policing is deteriorating worldwide, partly because the law is getting increasingly insane. In the UK people are going to prison for saying that women have vaginas, or just referring to someone born male, with a penis, as "him". Fully equipped, bearded males, allowed to force their way into young girls bathrooms and changing rooms. Exhibiting their unaltered parts. Claiming they are women.

I'm from a Sikh Kenyan back ground , both of my parents were born & raised in East Africa . They left in the 70's for England returning every few years until the early 90's when my grandparents passed away. Safety & corruption are the two biggest reasons why some many of our relatives & friends left . Dad has so many great childhood stories of visiting mombasa ... its sad that even now we dont see it as safe place to visit and return to . Our family history was over 70 years in East Africa... my parents still speak swahili to each now ... along side punjabi & English. I would love to go back to and explore my family history , the Sikh community history in East Africa. I'm born in Britain, my heritage is punjabi indian ... but the Kenyan part of our history is so important , we became educated , business owners, community leaders all thanks to Kenya. Lastly the profiling you received as a white man was funny. Im a turban wearing bearded Sikh , you should see how the west treats me when I'm on my travels 👍 Be safe , & enjoy your travels. Thank you for reigniting my fire to return one day to our home

First, thank you very much for your video's. My wife and I love watching the shows every night. You do what many of us wish we could! This was definately not good. BTW, I once got arrested in Massachussetts for taking pictures of trains FROM A PUBLIC street. The RR cop insisted I, and my 3 friends were on RR property. Then he told the judge (yes, had to go to court twice) that he thought we were homeless and trying to break into box cars. This with over thousands in camera equipment, and sitting in a brand new Thunderbird. Judge got really angry at the RR police and threw it out, so your video brought all that back and that was in the US.. go figure.. anyhow, thank you again! Stay well, stay safe

I'm in Mombasa, sorry on behalf, for going through this. I suggest next time if you can, get a smaller camera that can be worn so that you don't raise alarms. I'm a photographer and each time I carry my DSLR camera it intimidates and raises brows. A Go-Pro can do well in these cases. Strap it on your chest or waist whichever works. I got in trouble at the old town too. Not recommended. But at the beach and parks and a lot of food joints, you can. I hope this helps.

Small white female here, former photojournalist. Detained for many hours in Sudan, incarcerated in Egypt for ten days and too many other stories. This stuff is no joke. Do NOT think your embassy will help you. Photographing government buildings, bridges, military zones are all a no go. White men do convert to militant factions of Islam and Christianity etc, and do bad things. Kenya has been VERY HARD HIT by terrorism. Hundreds of people killed in 1998 near the US Embassy, shopping mall in Westlands etc etc etc. The vast majority of tourists stay in the tourist side of town. To do something different is a red flag. I believe that many times cops are seriously concerned, but when they realize you're 'ok', they need to SAVE FACE. Saving face is VERY important in these cultures. The flip side is if you're a mzunu/khawaga/gringo, it becomes the most entertaining thing all month and it turns into a circus. Asking for bribes is not ok. Offering bribes doesn't necessarily get you out of a bad situation. Do the adventure, be aware bad things can happen.

Fascinating and gutsy. But, yep, a quarter of a million people around the world will make a judgement about Mombasa from this experience. It was heartening to see the caretaker lady show so much concern toward a stranger in her country. Frankly, it’s probably the same everywhere. I lived my life in very tourist-heavy regions of the US and when I saw the cops with tourists getting a little aggressive, or the tourists looked scared, I, like many others would freely step in to try and help lower the anxiety. It’s frightening.

You have to be careful where you film always. Because of the constant threats of terrorism we face as a country it is understandable that the security system is hyper alert. I would advice to always take a local especially in areas or situations that you're not familiar with. Alternatively as one dude below commented, notify the police in advance so as to minimise chances of these nasty situations happening to you. Rule of thumb to remember, its always going to be risky filming in areas that historically in kenya have been key targets for terrorism.

I have been watching your videos for a while and i have to say i feel you are sometimes somewhat culturally insensitive, dude, Kenyan police, security guards etc are unhappy about people walking around randomly filming in cities in general. This is the case in many African countries and is not unique for Kenya. In case you have been missing the context and reason for this, is that Kenya have had several terrorist attacks in the past from Al Shabbab all over Kenya, where the terrorists have been walking around filming before the attacks. After this happened, filming on public places have basically been prohibited. Me as a white person living in Europe know this already only having visited Kenya once. You have to smarten up and see all this in context. Your language learning skiils are amazing but maybe you should focus on some cultural adaptation and sensitivity. And in case you didnt know, No mzungus stay in Old Town anyway. No wonder they were a bit edgy. If this wasnt enough, there has been kidnapping etc going on in Mombasa recently so anything looking a tad out of the ordinary would catch their attention. You have to see all this in context and maybe read up a bit on current events and resent history context on the places you travel to. All the best.

This is sad but unfortunately it happens in a lot of places. I was born in Brazil but have lived in Europe most of my life and in 2010 I arrived in Rio de Janeiro and was robed by the uniform police!!!! Had to give then 500 Euros and I tell you it is a horrible feeling being robed by those who are supposed to protect you..
