There has a strong response by members of the medical community to a recent TikTok I posted discussing RSV. This response surprised me and I felt the need to clarify exactly what I said and how I believe these types of discussions should take place in the future. I don't think personal attacks have a place in any discussion about science, let alone a discussion amongst medical professionals, and I would encourage everyone to speak in comment sections the same way they speak when face to face.

As a doctor I have been guilty of throwing out criticism to my fellow doctors in the past. At the time I thought it was all in the spirit of delivering "the truth", but in retrospect I think it came from a place of jealousy. Many physicians are dissatisfied with high stress levels and being overworked and under-appreciated. It's easy to look at Doctor Mike's success as an outsider and say "what makes him so special?". Physicians who haven't watched much of his content or gotten to understand his mission or how much he has done for charity can then be prone to criticise. You dealt with this like a true gentleman and you have my respect as a fellow professional and as a person. You deserve all the recognition you have and more. Thanks for leading the way for how doctors should behave on social media.

The way these other doctors reacted was definitely unprofessional, but I think it's understandable to be skeptical if you saw the top comment, with over 800 likes, on the TicTok he showed in the first part of this video that reads: "I'm not even a doctor and I knew this. is the bubble boy theory. you seclude a kid, let them out, body can't handle it." This person and 800+ others thought they were agreeing with Doctor Mike. If this many people believe misinformation from what he said, how many more thought that's what he meant, too? It might not have been intended to be misinformation, but confirmation bias has turned it into that.

Dr. Mike, although I'm not a medical doctor, I do have two Ph.D.s and have been a college professor for 28 years, so I'm a fellow educator. I also worked at a pharmaceutical company for 10 years WITH doctors, so I do at least have more than a layman's amount of information. Your videos are not only inspiring, but so, so informative. And, yes--very entertaining. You are the sort of doctor I wish my parents had had, as they were of the Depression-era generation that NEVER questioned doctors, regardless of how bizarre their theories were (including wrapping raw bacon around the neck of a child with mumps). It's hard to avoid negativity--only recently have I stopped obsessing over my teaching evaluations. Hang in there, and keep producing awesome content. *fist bump*

Hi from Sweden. I work as an associate nurse here. I have always found your videos to be inspiring and informative! I have followed you even before you hit a million subscribers. Thank you for all your hard work! About the covid situation, no we didn't have lockdowns but everyone WHO was feeling even the slightest feeling of sickness was not allowed to come to work or leave their kids at kindergarten and had to stay at home. Many stores and restaurants also had a max number of people who was allowed at the same time within the premises. We were also encouraged to work from home, everyone who could. Call it a semi lockdown if you will 😁🤔. So I think that theory is applicable even here.

My little 1yr old nephew has a milder case of it right now. I visited recently (not touching him which was soooo hard! I love his cuddles!) And the poor little guy was so melancholy and upset when he's normally a happy, goofy little stinker. He was coughing strongly and he had puffy, boogery eyes. It was the most pathetic sight. Made his auntie tear up, all I wanted was to hold him and kiss his cheek but he was abnormally clingy to my sister (his mommy). Poor little buddy, I hope he gets better soon

Nurse here and I rarely post on forums as a nurse because of alot of the backlash and miscommunication thats resulted, it was a never ending job just to try and explain context and explain the science to some people who seemed to not even be interested in legitimate research. @@TheAdrift I understand that. My point is that it can be confusing to patients when someone introduces themself as "Dr. X" without clarifying that they're not a medical doctor. I understand how much work a PhD is and I also understand wanting to use your title and I do not have an issue with doing it generally, but to avoid confusion, you should make it abundantly clear to patients that you are not a medical doctor. The simplest and safest way is to not use it at work.

As a bioethicist, I highly commend you for putting this out there to all of the medical community. Medicine should not be political. This field is a professional art which, as you accurately stated, always requires civil discourse, deliberation, and practice in order to provide your patients with benevolence, Justice, autonomy, dignity, and other virtue ethics within your professional knowledge. I'm in the natural sciences, and that's very much my view as well. There are regrettably far too many bullies out there who simply disparage others as if it somehow boosts their own research. I've had one rather decorated taxonomist on a particular site resort to personal attacks after I had to remove claims he had added that aren't supported in any of the literature and that weren't in line with site guidelines. My general finding is that those who resort to bullying, personal attacks, or just general incivility tend to have a whole host of other ethical, or even legal, problems that they bring with them.

Honestly, he's one of the few people online who if he did say something inaccurate, he'd be outing it himself, apologizing, and setting the facts straight. As a new mom with a 7 week old who is also a biology teacher, I will always respect meaningful debates when it comes to infectious diseases. I have been quarantining my daughter to protect her until at least her 2 month vaccines and have been taking the recommendations from our pediatrician seriously. RSV is no joke, especially with newborns, so no matter why this is all happening, the reality is that it is and people need to take it seriously. I've been a medical journalist for 25 years, on staff and as a freelancer, writing for both patients and clinicians. It's extremely disappointing when I think I've found a great subject matter expert to interview, I look at their social media, and I see that kind of churlish, ego-driven behavior. It makes me look for other sources with the same level of knowledge who either don't have social media or whose behavior on social media is professional. I will not risk the reputation of any publication or website that I write for by including sources who behave that way. Likewise, I will not ruin my own reputation by interviewing someone like that and then getting a call from an editor who tells me that the person has been fired, booted from their professional association, disinvited as a speaker, etc. because of what they said on social media. The irony is that a lot of the people who behave that way do it to draw attention to themselves and would love to get some publicity in the press. Well, they won't get it from me.

@@VoxVictus: I think Zenzalei Zee is just being cautious and doing their due diligence. Unfortunately, it's not all cut and dried. There are people who do outrageous things in their personal lives who are very knowledgeable about their professional specialty. However, sometimes those outrageous things may have implications for how they go about their work - the simplest example is someone who expresses racist views, that person is not going to treat all of their patients/customers/clients equally well. Dr Oz was apparently a respected cardiac surgeon but by the time he's shilled every quack weight loss product imaginable, he's no longer a credible source.

Honestly, watching Dr. Mike's channel has really opened my eyes on the medical field and I feel like he's so honest about everything. Anyways I hope nursing school (I dont really know what it is called) is going well!

I’ve watched almost all your videos since I was in nursing school 3 years ago. You’ve always tried your best to stay up to date with all the changes and updates in medicine. You even worked so hard to calm ppls nerves during the pandemic and giving accurate advice on vaccines. I think what you’re doing on KZbin is amazing and to do al that while being a full time doctor is impressive. Always look forward to seeing your videos. The internet will always have people like this who can’t stand your success or who want validation so they seek it by attacking others who they see as a threat, don’t let it get to you. Love that you explain that there are ways to have a healthy conversation/debate about a topic, because that’s an issue some have, they go straight into attacks and that doesn’t help very much if you want someone to listen to what you have to say. Kindness makes the world go round and we all have so much to learn from each other. Keep doing what you do because you’re doing an excellent job! 💯
