I WAS CURSED BY CULLODEN JACOBITES ???
So today's video sounds a bit crazy. This weekend is the anniversary of the battle of Culloden, in which thousands of (mostly Scottish highlanders) were killed in battle, in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie, against The British crow. Around 6 months ago, i was at the battlefield and snipped some heather to lay on the graves. it was so beautiful I decided to take some home and dry crushed it in a notebook. As explained in the video, ever since then there's been a dark cloud hanging over us. I'm not sure whether or not i believe in ghost stories and the paranormal, but i've been suitably freaked out enough to return the heather from where it came. So what do you think? Do you believe and, do you think i did the right thing?

Lots of interesting thoughts being posted here. I'll add another. The tragedy of the battle may live on at Culloden to some extent, in the ground, the plants, the rocks, everything. When you brought the heather home, maybe you brought some of that "tragedy" home with you - the energy of pain and disappointment that the Jacobite freedom fighters couldn't help but imprint on the place. I'm with the others here who think the soldiers themselves wouldn't want to curse you with bad luck, they would almost certainly be touched and proud that you visited and honored them, and grateful for the remembrance.

The Native American half of my family would tell you a small gift to the spirits is also needed. Here it would be a pinch of tobacco in Scotland I'm not sure if the same rules would apply and what you'd give that they'd appreciate. Although in many cultures around the world it's food or whatever the local alcoholic drink is.

In these kind of situations, its best to ask the spirits if they're okay for you to take something. Its a simple as asking the question and stilling the mind, usually you'll get an answer pretty quickly, if one doesn't come to you, then don't do it. I've found they're often happy to give if one asks, but unhappy on principle of one 'steals'. It may sound and seem silly and superstitious, but whats the harm in giving it a go in the future?

Gettysburg is also notoriously haunted and there are even stories about people encountering time slips where it seems they step into the events that took place there back in the 1860's.

Feeling haunted by the victims of the battle at Culloden? I did, for years and I could feel the drumming of the bodrana. I came on 17 April 2018, went over the little paths, viewed everything and listened to my guide. Very emotional, but finally I did not feel the drumming under my feet anymore and I knew I had made my peace too. Rest in peace Culloden.

Hi Shaun If you felt there was a disturbance in your Universe over the past 6 months, then you did the right thing. I'm in Australia and for many years we heard stories about tourists who took 'souvenir' rocks from Uluru (Northern Territory), then had experiences similar to what you described in your video. There were even reports of the rocks being mailed back to the location! Thankfully it rarely happens now because of the strict access rules in the area of the rock. Thanks for sharing!

It is not superstitious. It is real. I know that because when I was little, the house that me and my family lived in was actually haunted, strange things keep happened to my family each year. It started in 1999 , the next 2 years my mother and father both had surgery. And the year after that it was me, it was 2001, I was in Primary 3. I remember I started to feel panic everyday. I did't want to go to school, just wanted to stay at home, I was really frustrated and angry at myself because I knew I shouldn't be feeling all this panic, panicking over nothing! But I had to call home everyday saying that I am sick I couldn't stay in school, because I was so afraid, especially when I was away from my family. 3 months later, the school sent me to see a psychologist. Then I got better about 5 months later, but I don't think it was the psychologist, I knew from the start that he couldn't help but he didn't understand me. I think it was because of my mum who prayed everyday. I am from a Buddhist family so my mum invited some monk to come over to our house and prayed a few times. I think thats why I started to feel better. And then a year later, it was my younger sister. Every time she ate something her stomach and her tummy just swellen. We kept taking her to the hospital but nobody knows why this was happening. And then it stopped around 3 months later. Everything was so strange. It was bad luck, one thing after another. And then a year later after I finished Primary 5, my family decided to move to Scotland and then we sold the house. So Shaun, you are not superstitious, it is true. I am Chinese and from a Buddhist family. My grandma told me when I was little: Every time when walking pass a graveyard, don't look directly at people's grave, don't try to read (even just in your head) what it say on the tombstone, but the spirit will think that you are calling for them. Keep saying 'excuse me', to maybe the spirits ahead of you (that you couldn't see), you don't want to just walk right through them and so are they. You don't want to piss them off. AND NEVER PICK ANYTHING FROM GRAVEYARD, DON'T TOUCH THEM, AND SURE NOT TO TAKE THEM HOME. Ghosts are real, you don't know why but sometimes they are just angry. I know Shaun you wasn't being disrespectful, but they just didn't like it.

And I have read online that, a Chinese Outlander fan who came to Scotland and wanted to visit the Culloden Battlefield. She got off the train and went to get a taxi, but the driver refused to take her there. She said the driver told her that it is not a nice place to go, especially on a gloomy day, and told her if she really really wants to go, at least wait for another day. And he just refused to drive her there. Even some of the locals think it is a haunted place.

Here's a bit of ancient (well, sort of ancient) history for you. In the summer of 1975 I had quit my job to go backpacking in Scotland. I'd traveled from Inverness to view the battlefield at Culloden. It was a dreary day of mist and occasional rain and, as far as I saw, I was completely alone. Let me say here that I wasn't what you might call especially spiritual & I wasn't looking for an 'experience'. As I came to the Well of the Dead, suddenly I felt as if a cold finger had been run down my back and I knew my presence wasn't welcome. I wasn't endangered or anything like that, simply not wanted. I left shortly after. Scoff if you like, but I remember the feeling to this day. I respect your feelings and actions. Luck to you and your family.

I visited Culloden on a cold, misty day in April of 1995. This was way before the tv series but I had read the first four books. The Battlefield was deserted at the time except for myself and as I walked the paths I experienced much the same feelings. The best way I can describe it is as an atmosphere of despair pressing down on me. I am another person who is not normally superstitious or spiritual but there is very definitely something there.

Shaun, You have done the proper & respectful duty in returning the dried heather. In a way having dried the beautiful flowers makes them last longer for the souls that have past...and I’m most certain they have watched & appreciated what you have done. Dried flowers to a soul that’s passed from said century of battle, means more to them than for people of today’s generation. Back then it was all about remembrances...Locks of hair, cut ribbon, pieces of tartan, and dried flowers...these were all they had to hold onto. In watching the Vlog I got a sense that your suspicions re; said bad luck had immediately changed. Being the anniversary of the Culloden Battle spirits are there wandering day & night, so you were in the midst of that special symbolic air. Making amends as you did was such the right thing to do. In reading several people’s response in here to suspicion, ghosts, bad/good luck...I was in agreement with quite a few...Especially when they said never take ANYTHING as a remembrance or token but, rather commune with nature & the spirits that roam...It’s more appreciated by them. I know your circumstances will change all for the better. I’ve experienced a similar situation as I’ve mentioned before and the moment I removed the item that I felt was the harbor of bad omens instantly everything changed. Peace to you & yours always✌🏼

Thanks for the video and stepping carefully around the description of those who fought and died at Culloden. We should never confuse this battle as Scots-v-English. There were four Scots regiments on the Government side and their memory is insulted by those who say the Jacobites where fighting for Scotland - they weren't, they were fighting for a Catholic 'prince' who took advantage of the feudal 'clan system' to get Highlanders to fight for his cause. It was a war of succession based on religious differences and thankfully the Government prevailed and avoided another bloody civil war. My thoughts are with all who died here and especially the Highlanders who, I believe, were duped into fighting and showed enormous courage and heroism - as did the redcoats who stood and faced them. Let's not forget that the Union of 1707 was under a Scottish monarch (Queen Anne) and at the request of the Scots...

I don’t feel it was disrespectful. I’m not superstitious, I believe sometimes things just happen. Bad things happen and I don’t really know why, but they do. Sometimes they come in spurts. I’ve had my mother pass away, and my father be diagnosed with lung cancer, and other personal issues happen since last August 2017. The point is... I believe things just happen, past lifestyle choices, sometimes there’s no reason etc. Sometimes stuff just happens.

I've spread the ashes of a brother and my father near the stone of our fallen ancestors on Culloden. A wee drop of whisky too of course, for them all. I can say that as I looked over the field I felt their presence and could feel the kinship and comradeship emanating up from the ground and through the air. I thanked them and they said they'd be looking forward to my spirit joining them there in many years time. True story.

You know what would be cool If you could do an overlay on the aerial shot of the battle field . That shows where the Highlanders were and where the English were. ? Just to try and get a better understanding. I think that is so interesting. I have been to several Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields here in the USA.

Although, I have a feeling that the spirits disturbance has a lot more to do with the housing complex situation in politics than anything you did. I can recall listening to Diana Gabaldon speak once of her impressions when she visited Culloden, I paraphrase here but she said she felt something other as well, it truly is a sacred place. I think if one is mindful, you cannot help but feel the devastation & loss, the courage & valor of so many who lost their lives that fateful day. You do honor to the place, returning your sprig of heather, knowing you also hold the place sacred. It was a poignant moment & a true gift. Praying your family will have health and peace in the remaining year ahead. I lost 2 of my cousins to pancreatic cancer in a 2 week period. One was my best friend and both were my age. Then the one cousin's mother passed away on my birthday. Another dear friend was diagnosed with cancer the day of my friend's funeral. Must keep the faith. I get sad just thinking of what happened at Culloden. If I actually visited the site, I would probably be in tears the whole time. I sure like your idea of vlogumentaries. Even though British means Scottish, English, Irish (at the time) and Welsh. God, mate. Scots are Brits.Most Scots also fought for the government forces in the Jacobite Rising. Some Englishmen also fought in the Jacobite army.

Great video, Shaun. I thinks it's wonderful that you brought the heather back to the field and stated your regret at removing it. While I'm not sure if I believe in curses or not, my family has Native American roots, as well as several other cultures mixed in, and we we're always taught that places such as these are sacred ground and should be treated with the highest levels of respect and honor. My father always told us that the best way to have a keepsake or a memory of these special places, without doing it harm, is to take a photo of the item you connect with and wish you could remove. Then, you print out (or develop) the photo, frame it, and place it somewhere that you will see it often. Each time you look upon that photo, take a moment to reflect on what you felt when you captured it on film, and why this keepsake was important to you. By doing that, you are honoring the place, the people, the memories, etc., and in most cases you are doing this more often than you would've if you had placed (for example) a flower in a book or a rock on a shelf and eventually forgotten the feelings and importance attached. I've decided to go one step further by writing a short explanation on the back of the photo, or on a small slip of paper to be placed inside the frame so that when I'm gone, my family members in the future will know why this item held significance in my life.

I think everyone said it for me. I think you did the right thing, too, for peace in your heart and making amends. Most definitely there are Souls who stay at battlefields, cemeteries, and even hospitals. There is a former tuberculosis hospital where I am that has made the bravest persons run away screaming. I will never go near it. But what you did was very touching and loving. In fact I feel your gesture was an excellent kindness, and perhaps the Jacobites think so, too.

there was a documentary style tv program about ...I don't recall but it was about clairvoyance. Tony Stockwell? I think is his name was one of the subjects , they went out onto the Culloden field and the battle was still going on. they (the spirits)didn't realize they were dead.

I know there are a mature apps for that, not sure if they work or are just pre recordings, I guess you would have to buy a voice recorder. I did a voice box session a few times in a cemetery and my room both had results that were eerie

Outlander does paint Scots as famously superstitious. Would you agree? At least that's the first thing that came to mind from this video. I assume lots of people take Heather from the battlefield - no disrespect intended, I hope things improve for your family and it was a good video to watch. It's just one of the first thoughts that came to mind.

I would say we are quite superstitious people in general (which is odd, because it even includes atheists and people who are generally quite sceptical). I'm agnostic, leaning towards atheist, and I tend to be quite logical (if something weird happens, I'll think of the most logical reasons for it)...and yet I still follow the First Footing rules on New Year, I still touch wood if I don't want to tempt fate (when I don't even believe in fate), I still subconsciously believe old wives tales my granny told me about new shoes on a table or opening an umbrella indoors being bad luck, I still believe four leaf clovers and white heather are lucky and in the silver coin to bring good fortune/luck thing. I still believe bad things come in threes. It's odd. It's not something I've ever really questioned before.

My relatives left Scotland the year before Culloden. I visited a couple of years ago and had thought there was not much to see prior to my visit (an open field). However, upon visiting the site I was overwhelmed by the simple yet poignant setting where brave men died for their beliefs and a nation was formed.

I dropped my phone there and it shattered. Dropped it hundreds of time before, but this time totally annihilated. I really feel sad there too. I’m not even Scottish and it totally drew me in. Going back next year again. I’m now so into Scottish history. Actually want to live in the highlands.

I think it’s great you honored the deceased, but removing something from a battlefield, especially where many died, may be not the best idea. I’m Catholic and have always been told to respect sacred ground certainly cemeteries and gravesites where people were tragically killed. God Bless you and watch over you.

Shaun, have you ever looked into seeing if you have family who fought at Culloden? You feel like you are connected some how. It might be your ancestors there. I also think that anyone who has heard of this battle feels something. It's a very horrible thing. Not only the battle, but that the people of Scotland suffered after the battle. That their way of life was gone. This battle changed the whole country. There is lifetimes of grief here. Prayers to you, your family, those that fought, and their families.

In 2002, I was headed for Fort William on a City Link Glasgow/Inverness. Coach. As the coach was passing Rannoch Moor, I was surprised to see charging across a stretch of it into the distance, an army of longhaired tartan plaided bare legged sword and claymore armed men it looked like a scene from Braveheart and I wondered if a movie was being made.i remember seeing bloodied scratched, wounded limbs and faces, the faces depicting silent wild roars . I turned away for a couple of seconds to see if anyone else on th bus had noticed, when I looked back, the battle scene I'd just witnessed was gone. A mist formed over the Moor and my spirit deeply moved by a realisation what I had seen was definitely not of this World. It was quite a fierce and gory scene, and so whoever these die hard Highlanders were and whoever their Battle was against, I pray in my heart that they won.🌌🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥀

I don't believe in curses. I don't even know if I believe in good or bad luck. Things just happen. I was wondering, Shaun, if the Culloden Battlefield was expressible at night. If so go and take some pictures on night vision or with just using the flash. Do it randomly, don't look for anything in particular at the time. When you have done that look at the results on the camera itself. There might be absolutely nothing to see or you just might see an orb or two floating around. Orbs are supposed to be the souls or the energy of the dead. Bodies die, but energy does not, so it has to go somewhere.The energy is what keeps the body alive barring something devastating happening. It makes us function. All life, human or animal has energy. As I said you might see nothing at all. A lot of people think this is nonsense and who knows it might be. However, I have seen it for myself. One in a picture with my grandson and a whole bunch more in a Japanese cemetery in Hawaii. To confirm a suspicion I asked the tour operator if there were any electrical wires in the vicinity and he said no. Just to be sure I went there in the daytime and saw no electrical wires. Just thought you might be interested.

Some well known researchers found bones from a Native Arawak. They studied the bones but couldn't wait to put them back EXACTLY where and how they found them.

I had an experience here. I walked my dog round the battlefield and when we got to the actual war graves... my dog started growling at one grave in particular. This growling was a noise Ive never heard from my dog. Aside from that, I felt the same as you. I just didnt like the atmosphere but I couldnt explain why....

Mine was in New York City at the former site of the World Trade Center. 9/11/2001 approx 3000 died that day. I had this overwhelming sense of...I don’t know, maybe sadness?

It doesn't have to be spiritual - everything is energy and the energy held in that space infuses itself in the plants, so you probably just took that traumatic, dense energy home with you. It's more of like physics than woo-woo lol. You definitely did the right thing by returning it!

American here with a Welch surname but a lot of Scots Irish and some Scots ancestry. Recently discovered one ancestor said to have fallen at Culloden, last name Pollock. In America it became Polk. Had I no connection to Scotland or Culloden I'd still revere it as a special place.

im not sure if i will be able to explain it properly... but how i see haunted places etc is this way... each person has a certain energy, electrical field that is part of them, when many many people gather there is always this charge in the air, whether its a huge concert or gathering or in this case battle. And that leaves a residue, an imprint of all that energy. It stays in the ground and surrounding areas. and the way i see it, by picking the heather , that has grown in a ground charged by what happened before, because it was such a traumatic even, it stays with the plants, imprints them as well ( that hair raising feeling you get in some places, almost electrical charge in the air). So taking it home, you take some of that energy that gathered in that spot home, and that has an effect on you and your surroundings. by taking it back, you take back the plant charged with that energy back to where it came from , and no longer are affected by it yourself. in a way, thats how i see , or explain to myself, the why we feel the air thick with certain feelings. Makes sense?
