A good source for sand paper over 800 grit are auto parts stores in the body and paint section. Great to see content again!

Also for the final rub try using a women's nail buffer/file on the polish surface, in fact the rougher buffing surfaces are also extremely fine, more so than sand paper.

From my own personal experience I can tell you that a mirror shine can be learned with less than 1000 tries. The Army will teach you that. But it does take time. One thing we used to do to speed up the wax buildup process was heat the wax so it could be applied more like paint. Once on and all the leather roughness is filled in smooth it out with a bit of spit, then buff away and enjoy.

I thrifted a pair of those same Carlyle’s Same exact color and it took me two years to get them looking pristine and because I wanted to keep the color original and believe me I was very tempted to die them burgundy or chestnut it was especially difficult.

Those gouges are gnarly. If I had gouges like that I would donate them for sure. That's beyond character in my opinion. However the fact you could get rid of those is awesome.
