That lady at 1:17, eating popcorn, is too funny! 🤣 She looked like she was really enjoying what was happening. - On another note, I watched his set-up and follow through a few times and tried to figure out if I would have seen that coming. Only via experience, I guess and via watching your video. - Good post!

Yeah - I was definitely caught off guard. By the time I figured out that he wasn't going for my arm, he had my leg fully locked. I never noticed the popcorn lady until you pointed her out - awesome!

Ur vids have taught me the essence if this art: folding someones clothes while they are still in them.

Yes - That's HALF the essence. The other half is getting your clothes folded while you are still in them. Not my favourite part, but it definitely makes up a huge part of things!

My worst nightmare

Mine too. It was tough to edit this video, as I had to watch it unfold many times. Hopefully, it won't be a recurring nightmare.

I have this same issue of not being aggressive/intentional enough in competition. I need to remind myself this is a tournament, not just another open mat session on Saturday morning. Thanks for posting this and confirming Im not the only one who struggles with this.

How old was the dude? As a 51 year old Brown, there's limitations on how aggressive we can be. Especially with prior/permanent injuries. Slick setup though! Cheers!

Morgan is 29 years old. Just a young fellar! Still, I regret not coming at him with some aggression. That “wait and bait” strategy was the wrong move for me. Yes, I definitely appreciate the slickness of his setup! Thanks for taking the time to comment 😁

I wouldn't enter any competition that allowed heel hooks in gi. It's really dangerous as your ability to escape is extremely limited. I took a year off training and started up at a new gym. On week 4 I was rolling with a very aggressive, much younger, blue belt. He tried a straight ankle lock on me which didn't work and then switched to a heel hook and although I verbally tapped immediately once I knew what he was doing he put it on at full force anyway. Injured my knee out and took me 8 weeks to recover (thankfully no permanent damage). I didn't go back, I don't have time to be getting heel hooked in gi by a blue belt at a local gym.

That’s a rotten experience. That blue belt needs to be “sat down”. Even when we mess around with heel hooks in nogi, I’m a quick tapper because I like my use my knees for things like walking. In gi, the grips are so much stickier, escapes are more difficult, and he should have applied it without any torque. I appreciate that Morgan didn’t crank it on me, but you’re right- that’s putting a lot of trust in a stranger to show restraint in competition. The risks are real, and I’ll definitely be checking rule sets in future competitions before signing up!
