And for the most part the worst most trans people do when they actually get misgendered is get uncomfortable and try to leave the situation. Like yeah some trans people end up getting extreme about it because sometimes cis people really suck and no matter what you do they will keep doing it and that can really hurt sometimes, especially if it’s someone important to you. But most of us just try to shrug it off. I mean especially when you’re early in your transition or if youre gender nonconforming it happens a lot. So often it stops stingin as much and you get more used to it, you shouldn’t have to but you do

I have found the review. One thing I cant help but note is that the website actually has a page about the use of gendered language (since german, as Noah points out, has no gender neutral terms) and they state specifically that they generally use the male term as generic term for better readability. Man did they fuck this one up.

How I understood that note was them just clarified that they wouldn't gender and use the masculine form for when they talk about others. For example if they said 'the listener is taken on a journey' they use the masculine version of listener (Hörer) instead of the form that is being established more as an inclusive version (Hörer*innen). I just think they probably still would gender the musicians in different ways, I don't think they would call, for example Beyoncé 'he'. But yeah, they definitely messed up with noah. At least they corrected it for the most part.

More recently, when I called in to establish my place in my surgical clinic's list for vaginoplasty, the answering service literally deadnamed me, in spite of the fact that my legal name change was completed more than 8 months prior to my referral going in to the surgical clinic. There is literally no reason for the surgical clinic (or their phone service) to even know my deadname, much less use it. It really is something that happens to literally 100% of us. It's especially annoying when someone is clearly going out of their way to do it deliberately. Scumbags, indeed.

I feel the same. When someone does it intentionally, that's about them and who they are as a person. When someone does it accidentally, it feels like it's about me and how I am perceived/ how I look (even if I know that's not always the reason). (Well, less so now. It's rare I get misgendered these days, and I've had quite a few years to get to grips with my dysphoria).
@Sam..12310 ай бұрын
Its absolutely the other way around for me. If someone does it on purpose it signals to me that they wish me harm and ultimately dont want me to excist. It causes massive angciety and then because I have to surpress my feelings and be all "civil" and "a good representative" and also because it usually happens at work or when im with my kid (because im always either at work or with my kid) it just turns inwards and becomes depression. Honesty i need help, how do you get to a point when it legitimately doesnt effect you?
@WhyIsTheClosetDoorOpening10 ай бұрын
@@Sam..123 I totally get that and I also feel that way, but the way I look at it is that if they’re doing it on purpose they’re just a terrible person, if they do it on accident it feels more like I genuinely dont pass at all and that causes massive dysphoria for me. Im sorry you feel that way tho, it really sucks, I hope you get to a point where it doesn’t bother you
@neonblkhole8 ай бұрын
@Sam..123 it can be incredibly difficult to get to the point where you don't care what other people think of you; I think it's an empathy thing. but you have to remember, those people amount to nothing in your life. they're obnoxious and spiteful, but they have no power over you. regardless of their wishes, they can't make you disappear. and it says nothing about you - you're fine, just living your life being a decent person; it's them that's so dissatisfied with some aspect of their life or self that they feel the need to attack those they don't understand. it's pathetic, but it's entirely their problem, and it's not really you they hate; it's something deeper on their end and they're just taking it out on you. but they'll be out of your hair in a few minutes. basically it just takes a lot of time and practice, but I can tell you internalizing it definitely won't get you there. I'm a visual person, so I think of it like batting a way a fly, or putting up a shield for the comment to ping off of before it really hits. water rolling off the back of a duck. you have a kid, I don't, but I at least was one so maybe you're familiar with this experience: does your kid ever throw a tantrum or get fixated on making a certain sound over and over? you've probably learned to tune it out to the point where it doesn't drive you crazy, right? you might be able to employ the same tactics.

As a cis male, I have been misgendered. Not maliciously, but as a child I was occasionally mistaken as a girl. Idk if I "carried myself" a certain way. Happily, I started sprouting a thick beard at 13-14--which, in hindsight, was a gender-affirming experience for me. And a little surprising for the family, since my dad and brother were not like that.
@CactusMuffin10 ай бұрын
I appreciate when cis people adopt language that helps to describe your own experience with gender. This kind of stuff shouldn’t be scary or shameful to talk about.
@omp19910 ай бұрын
Your maleness is your sex, not your gender. Someone getting your sex wrong is not "misgendering" you. They are simply getting your sex wrong. When you grew a beard, it did not "affirm your gender". It simply meant that you were undergoing normal male development. If you were happy about it, that just meant that you were comfortable being male. Hope that helps!
@Ian_Jules10 ай бұрын
@@CactusMuffin Thanks! It’s interesting that I got two opposing replies. I’d like to add that I, personally, try never to correct others on what they felt, especially when I wasn’t there. There may be an argument that “misgendering” isn’t the best word for my experience. Out of respect for trans folks, I’ve been hesitant to describe it as such before. But I was responding directly to Noah’s question. Also, I do think many queer people, trans or cis, deal with what I’d call gender insecurity or doubt. Traditionally, being a man implies being attracted to women and vice versa. As soon as you break that norm, the “validity” of your gender expression, if not your identity, is questioned. Some people may respond to social pressure by overcompensating or leaning into a stereotype. I don’t want to police anyone’s personal expression. I just look for the feeling of genuinely connecting.

It’s nice to see that by now thy corrected their mistakes… idk how that might have happened because Noah is a common name for males here… 8:39 yeah the German language doesn‘t really have a really fitting pronoun that is equivalent to the English „they“… you could use ihnen but in our language it is use only to describe a group of people, therefore can’t be used like the English they. Some enbys use dey/ deynen wich are neopronouns that can be compared to they/them. To my knowledge not many people use these, but rather use the literal they/them in the German language if they want to use any at all… Reason for this is that the German language is a d*** (yep I don’t like my mother tongue). Also these neo pronouns are not common /wildly known amongst the German population.

As a nonbinary, I used to think i was trans FTM in the past because "if im not a girl- i have to be a boy!-... right?" Wrong. I just didnt know what nonbinary is. The misgendering is delicious to consume 😅

Actually actress isn't--or shouldn't--be used anymore. People who act, regardless of gender (or lack thereof) are actors.

i’ve just come to terms with the fact that i’m transmasc after struggling with my gender for years. of course i’m not transitioned yet, or even out yet because i’m not in the space to. it’s really hard to come to terms with this and i’m struggling, but finding your channel is making things a lot easier and making it seem like things won’t be that bad. thank you

I’ve said it hundreds of times, (I said it just yesterday) and I’ll say it hundreds of times more; ‘journalistic integrity’ is an oxymoron. It seems likely that the review was written at least in a large part by AI. AI is notoriously bad when it comes to gender nonconforming stuff and minorities in general.

I know this is not nearly comparable, but when I was a boy and I called some store on the phone they'd think I was a girl. I remember I how I felt, definitely moody about it, and though I'm not trans I think I know what you mean and how you feel about it.

I mean i am a cis man im big and hairy but i have long hair witch has lead to a number of time where someone talking to they kids has said 'give the money to the woman' and then look up over the counter at my massive beard, it why i laugh when they say they can always tell because from my experience long hair is enough to confuse a fair few people.

As non-binary/multi-gender who uses all pronouns, Id like to rectify the meaning of "they/them" as usually used to refer to someone whose gender is unknown. It does not always imply someone's gender identity, quite the contrary in fact: you also use it when you dont know what the gender is.

I've been misgendered because people apparently assume only men can say "dude" and "bro" People also see me irl sometimes and go "you're trans aren't you???" No...? I'm cis? Then they get pissy when I say I'm cis and yell that I got surgeries because "no girl can have your ass/hips/boobs"

I've always thought that "they/them" was the safest option when a person still hasn't told you their pronouns. Is it rude? (Edit: this is a genuine question. I'm currently using "he/they" and I'm slooowly testing waters with how I feel with "he/him" only, and other people I know said they prefer the neutral when talking with someone new)
@ate_a_radio10 ай бұрын
i agree, they/them is neutral and always works! but if someone has told you their pronouns and you never use them and always use they/them it can come across as rude
@pompom445810 ай бұрын
@@ate_a_radio thank you! I do make sure to use the correct pronouns once I know them. Noah talking about the "they/them" matter got me worrying for a while, but now it's clearer :)
