As an Asian male, I had quite delicate, almost feminine facial features when I was younger. I also preferred to keep my hair at medium length. There were times when service worker would mistake me for a woman and address me as 'ma'am'. They opened up an investigation, I hired a lawyer, since this wasn't a judicial case but a disciplinary action within the school board I was found guilty. Technically there is. As a woman, I have had people call me "sir" before on accident. When I wear my hair down, it softens my face and there is no mistaking what I am, but when I pull it back, my features are strong, not softly pretty, so at a glance, I am not traditionally feminine through the face. So I have had people more than once just call me "sir" at a glance when I simply throw my hair up instead of taking the time to wear it down. Of course, I am not so personally affronted by things that I make a big deal out of it. Mistakes get made, and I know I'm not a glamor queen.
