I got the impression that Elise liked modeling more than she wanted to admit, so she continuously put the industry down. She seemed insecure about who she really was so she clung to her education to hide. She never became a doctor, but she did keep modeling for some time.

I agree. I think the clue is that she says she didn't think she did well, and her response is to tell herself she doesn't care. She cares. Why argue with yourself about how irrelevant it is? You could always just leave.

I kinda of got that vibe as well, maybe growing up modeling was looked down upon in her family or something versus school/studies. Being studious and smart could of been a coping mechanism for her. I also wonder if there was some sort of tension that happened off camera for her to blow up like that, cause you know how these shows like to cut out context to fit their narrative. This is all just my theories and assumptions, cause I don't trust reality tv 😂

Miss J never changed imo. Like in cycle 16 when some of the girls won the fan meet challenge, they went to dinner with Ms Jay and he gave them super real advice. His "mean comments" were probably encouraged by production and editing since they literally pressured judges to say snappy things and also edited out nice comments when they WERE made. And considering almost every model from every single season still gushes about Miss Jay, I'm gonna put this on production and not him.

@@underthegardenwall I can agree with you. But you also have to admit that production had some of these things to work with BECAUSE HE DID IT. so he's still somewhat responsible for what he's said and done even if it wasn't always from him directly. Just like I used to like Nigel but then realized the bad parts were still something he agreed to do and say. 🤷🏽‍♀️ But we can agree, we know for a fact production and Tyra caused most of this.

@@_labacanitaz And that's totally fair. Like, Ms Jay pushing Danielle to close her tooth gap was one of his rare "wrong" moments, but at least I get the sense that that was his actual true opinion (as wrong as it was), whereas judges like Nigel constantly seemed to be mean to the models in order to please Tyra and production. Most of the judges caved to that bullying culture, whereas Ms Jay rarely seemed to. Don't get me wrong, he IS responsible for any wrongdoings he did, but I very rarely got the sense that he caved to production's demands or lost his morals in the process. Other judges did imo.

I think the reason Elyse’s doctor vs. model thing rubbed the others the wrong way was mainly because of her superior attitude. She so clearly thought she was above this industry, she’d be making fun of it while still doing it. A lot of them wondered why she wanted to be there if she hated it so much, it was like she was taking an opportunity away from someone. There’s nothing wrong with pursuing something for a short time (she knew that any modeling career she had would be finite because of the industry’s focus on youth); but constantly mocking the other girls for caring about beauty, fashion, etc. crossed a line. Truly smart people don’t need to constantly brag about their intelligence, or to demean others around them, and she was incredibly rude and condescending to her roommates and to a lot of the industry people she met.

Your comment made me reflect and maybe she was actually genuinely into it but terrified of 1 failing at something that isn't intellectual and 2 any backlash returning to college and having to deal with how her peers there would maybe judge her. @cheesecake134
@cheesecake134 2 жыл бұрын
I mean they were also condescending to HER about wanting to be a doctor. Remember Miss Jay being all “that’s A LOT of work!” when she said she wanted to start medical school? It was like she just had some silly girlhood fantasy and hadn’t been actively working toward the goal for years. I also found it confusing and frustrating when the judges got snippy and told her she was being arrogant and talking down to them after explaining the benefit of classically feminine estrogen features in modeling. She IS an intelligent, educated person, so was she supposed to play dumb in that situation? It only bothered Tyra because she’s long convinced herself she’s the smartest in the room and hates any evidence to the contrary.

@@cheesecake134 I also agree with you. They definitely were condescending to her acting like just because she was doing modeling meant that she couldn't do anything science-based. However, she was also pretty horrible to them in the way she spoke about them. Just because someone enjoys modeling over science-based careers doesn't mean that they also aren't intelligent or worthwhile in their career choice as well. It's definitely one of those situations where I think everyone is wrong. We've long established that Tyra's just an utter trash heap so she's just wrong. You have to remember that in the early 2000s, any performance of femininity was considered vapid and unintelligent, and people who performed femininity were seen as inferior. I was a teenager at the time and experienced it first hand. I was affected by this and spoke like this myself, that was the social climate. Pick me culture, "not like other girls", "one of the boys", "too smart to like fashion". Those were all very real expressions of the anti-feminine trope. And to people who want to say "I grew up at the same time and wasn't like that!" - good for you. A lot of us were. Elyse's behavior wasn't bred in a vacuum. The early 2000s were the peak of internalized misogyny. Good thing we're passed that now.

Hard disagree. I was in middle school in the early 2000s, the time when body insecurities really kick in for girls. The pressure to be a "glamour all star jock" was sky high. The pressure to start makeup, wear certain clothes, and above all, getting a boyfriend? That was all there. That lasted into the mid 2000s, which was high school for me. What happened was the *media* pushed for picture perfect femininity, while the general population began to cling to the "not like other girls" trope while simultaneously following the pressure . Now, the media is heavily into the "not like other girls" stuff, and in various communities I know of that claim they are feminist proceed to slam femininity both in general and when looking at various forms of media. Have you ever heard of Sansa Stark? The hatred for her in the game of thrones series and the book fandom (a song of ice and fire), is really really strong. And they slam her for being "vapid, only likes dresses and songs and tales of knights" with claims that she bullied her sister Arya, who starts out as the epitome of "Not like other girls," up to the point where she's legitimately a brat (she grows out of it but not in the healthiest way. But that's because her arc takes her down a dark path that's not entirely of her own doing). Internalized misogyny is very prevalent today. There's only one difference between then and now: People are starting to call out the "not like other girls" trope. People are starting to defend performances of femininity while still establishing you can be a tomboy or whatever you want to be. And it's really only around the Pandemic where I've started to see people fight back and sorta "switch the tables" on the whole "not like other girls" thing (ie: painting a very real picture of a girl that was never fond of sports and was drawn to makeup and fashion trends and high heels and good hair products).

I think Elyse's reaction is better understood within the context of the other episodes of that cycle. A lot of Robin's behavior towards her throughout the show looked like passive-aggressive~barely hidden bullying. People (contestants, judges and probably behind the scenes producers too) kept pushing this narrative on her that she should want it differently, pick only fashion over everything else, be thankful to be here without ever being critical of anything or feeling negative emotions, etc.. She was away from her family/friends/boyfriend for a while and didn't really connect with anyone (until much much later) on the show and was basically all alone. You can see the beginning of a shift in her behavior once they let her see her boyfriend. They're also 10 very very young barely adult women living all over each other under the same roof. All of this generates a lot of tension, stress, and Elyse's reaction to this is cynicism and irony. I'm honestly not surprised she snapped and feel bad for her even if I do not think the things she said were fair or respectful. Edit : Also it's not abnormal to have doubts. Most of us have moments where we feel so defeated we don't even know or feel like we want something anymore. Edit 2 : And I remember she was constantly being questioned about her body and weight, then contestants and judges would make wild assumptions about her having an eating disorder when it wasn't the case. That's not pleasant things to deal with.

@@kherise Robin, other contestants, the judges and as I said probably also the producers behind the scenes, were already pushing these narratives on her, and the first time she got weird comments on her body was the very first episode with the bikini shot. The reaction vid isn't the complete episode and earlier in episode 2 Robin was behaving like a bully with her because Elyse doesn't share her religion. And they literally are 9 (in this episode) people barely out of teenagehood living in shared rooms. Also I'm not excusing what she says at all, there's just more context than only arrogance that could lead to her snapping in the confessionals. It's built up frustration, stress and anger coming all at once since she choses not to confront the other girls and start arguments. Everyone gets mad or frustrated and people aren't constantly behaving in the fairest way. It's easy for us to judge and condemn her with the distance we have on the situation as a viewership, but she was living this irl and you don't always have hindsight and composure when you're under pressure. I'm not saying she's exempt from all criticism, just that extracts from only one episode aren't sufficient to fully grasp what is going on here.

@@cheesecake134 Yes this! The bible verse scene was BEYOND disgusting and straight up bullying. What Elyse said was disgusting, but I'd say a 1x breakdown backstage to a camera is less bad then someone actively bullying someone through the WHOLE season for not being Christian. Elyse certainly had a superiority complex to a certain point, but so did Robin in her own religious way, and hers was openly toxic. Plus we had Elyse in ep1 being told her body is super skinny by other girls, have rumours spread online that she might have an ED, get judged by Adrienne in this episode in the car for not responding when she had headphones on. They really did not like her, so I wouldnt be shocked if there was even more we didn't see. I'm not even a huge fan of Elyse, but the hate she got at some point all whilst Robin got away with it, possibly since at the time more people were Christian, was ridiculous. I'd rather be in a room with an Elyse talking smack about me to a camera, then a Robin spend a whole season bullying me in my face and making sure I KNOW about it, sheesh.

I get the impression she was raised in very different social circles with very different standards, she holds the other girls to those standards, and when they're "lacking" she condemns them. I think she does like modelling, but that's a stigmatised thing for her to like, so again she lashes out at the others, they don't have that stigma, they don't restrain themselves, so they're wrong. She says she's alienated by the others, I get the impression thar she doesn't understand the other girls, and can't connect to them, so she shields herself by claiming everyone, and everything is beneath her. She's not failing or not achieving, everything and everyone is stupid and a waste of time. A very teenage mindset. I wasn't surprised at her rant, we could sort of see it brewing, was it okay to say? No. She should've written it down, then burnt it afterwards. I'm sure she would grow out of it quite quickly she seems to be resenting herself just as much as the other girls in these clips, things like these tend to sort themselves out with time.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I loved Elyse then & I love her now, I found the girls on her cycle to be pretty awful, compared to many other seasons and while I do see how Elyse's attitude & this rant would paint her in a bad light but I mostly believe she was letting out steam & that she really got a raw deal from the others throughout her season. Between Robin constantly bringing up religion to her (knowing she was an atheist) and even asking her to read a bible verse about how foolish nonbelievers are, and then the others alleging that she had an eating disorder and bringing it up at panel and constantly trying to make her feel bad for being an academic--I still think she came off better than most would. I personally find her relatable as hell and I used to love her blog.

This season had me hooked when I first watched a few years ago! I loved the eventual friendship between Elyse and Adrianne and how they ended up including Shannon later too. Was sweet to see after all of the drama in the earlier episodes. Was sad to hear that it didn’t last after the show though.

I kind of get Elyse's rant, I mean, clearly she was super fed up with everyone - I'd be too if I heard some of the things Elyse mentioned all the time (the Bible bs and "medical school is hard"). I think it's better that she vented to a camera where there was the possibility of no one seeing it rather than telling everyone all of that straight to their faces. However, I think she went a bit overboard with Giselle - saying she's worthless and that her parents should be ashamed of her was really mean. But I understand she was angry. The issue I mainly had with Elyse was how arrogant she was all the time, feeling like she's superior to the other girls because she's more intelligent, and also mocking the industry all the time WHILE being in a America's Next Top Model competition. I totally understand why the girls didn't like her or felt like she was taking someone else's spot. Just going off of her behaviour, yes, she was! Idk what her true feelings were, but she wasn't making a good case for herself.

Elyse was a great model but was pretty damn toxic. But toxic in a “she’s young and thinks she’s smarter than everyone in the room” way. Everyone talks about Elyse’s comments to Robin. But the other comments are awful.

@@4pplesl1ces12 agreed! Listen I was quite a ball of negativity when I was a teen so I can relate to elyse. But her attitude is terrible! Gives me flashbacks to my younger self thinking I was better than everyone else. I’m sure she is smart but she was not humble or nice during the time she was on ANTM

I don't really get the people in the comments saying they loved Elyse. At least from this episode it seems like she has such a superiority complex and is making herself out to be the outcast when it seems like the girls were trying to include her in conversations, she just thought she was too smart for those conversations. I hate that kind of attitude. My favorite that season from what I remember was Adrienne. She seemed very chill and funny.

Tbh it's not the first time I've seen this Elyse's rant but I get the feeling that she was tired to constantly be around people. This rant felt kind of like when I lash out because I just want to be left alone and I can't so I'll lash out so that the person that won't leave will leave. But I guess she didn't want to have an even worse relationship with the girls she still has to share living space with (that already were jealous because she got judges compliments and to them didn't seems invested in a career because she had a plan B. So the tension was high) so she vented to the camera. Also it IS the only time we see her do that, which support my theory that it was venting. So yeah I'm not defending what she said because she probably meant them and they're pretty harsh (except Robin's because pushing religion on someone is just a big no no). But I get a feeling of why she lashed out and it was probably the healthiest way to do it (since she didn't lash out at one of the girls). Anyway Elyse IS the most entertaining part of this season by far so of course we love to watch her 😂

@@ChulipsChu I agree. Elyse turned out to be one of the nicest girls of the season and really flourished when there were fewer people around. She also wasn’t wrong, J did belittle her intelligence and ambitions of being a doctor, Robin constantly pushed her religion onto her and several of the other girls bullied her. I think what happened was she was feeling insecure both because she actually enjoyed modelling and because she didn’t consider herself very good at it and she strikes me as an introverted person. Being confined in a small space with multiple people you don’t know and have nothing in common with you who all talk over you because you’re quiet with no means of escape is hell. In the end she snapped, went somewhere private (for all we know the camera room was the only place she could get some time to herself) and just vented. She didn’t say bad things about everyone and the girls she did we know bullied her.

Elyse ended up being one of the more successful high fashion models from the show. I used to follow her live journal and read about all her travels and also her issues with her abusive rockstar boyfriend. She could have been her own show honestly

I've seen the posts from a certain model's finsta account that was very reminiscent of Elise 😆 That being said, J's critiques were very accurate, Ebony's face had too much tension and looks much better on the runway when she softened up. Shannon fit perfect in the Molly Sims lane and Elise looked straight off a Prada runway.
