His body is still being searched to this day. Just like several thousand victims of communist terror in the years 1944-1956.

The word hero gets tossed around a lot, but if you look up "hero" in the dictionary his picture ought to be there.

This guy decided to intentionally get caught to gather intel from within camp. He made resistance groups inside, send info to outside world and described horrors that he saw. When outside he thought with others in Uprising. At the end he got sentenced to death, even tho he sacrificed himself and his freedom to gather intel from the most horrifying place he could think of.

I have just one issue with the lyrics to this song, that is "Accused of treason by his own". Though I cannot say for sure what were the feelings of particular people fighting the German and Soviet occupations, I can definitely say this: It is a common understanding that neither Soviets, nor "Polish" communists, were ever "our own". To understand this, it is necessary to understand the nature of Polish nationalism - unlike German nationalism, Poland, partially due to a century of being partitioned, partially due to already being a mixing pot of cultures, even prior to the partitions at the end of XVIII century, did not believe in "purity of blood". The ethnicity therefore wasn't decided by genealogy, but by culture. As the XIX-XX century Polish philosopher and political scientist, Wincenty Lutosławski, has stated - anyone could become Polish, as long as they internalized the culture, history, language and love for our nation. So long as you are willing to expend your effort, sweat and blood in order to bring prosperity to the Commonwealth, and you identify as Polish, you might as well classify yourself as one. Socialist policies, and international classist socialism (i.e. communism) in particular, stands in direct conflict with traditional values of Poland, however. This regime has been enforced upon Poland, members of the intelligentsia, capable of opposing it, systematically exterminated, and over a period of over four long decades, people have been traumatized into internalizing its values. But it was never the will of the people, and definitely not of the majority, to adapt this system and accept a position as a Soviet puppet state. Therefore, I, as well as many other Polish patriots, would _vehemently_ oppose the statement that Pilecki was arrested, accused of treason, put in front of a kangaroo court, and executed by "his own". And considering that many of his fellow soldiers, veterans surviving the war and suffering similar fate as him, right before the execution often uttered the words "Long live free Poland!", I have a strong belief that Pilecki himself would agree with this viewpoint.

Well said brother, a true patriot of Poland would never readily hand over his nation, heritage, and culture to the hands of the Bolsheviks... and they certainly wouldn't put a Kinsman on trial for bogus crimes.

I'm from Poland. Pilecki is one of our national heroes. In fact, he voluntarily allowed himself to be caught by the Germans and transported to Auschwitz, where he organized a resistance movement. After 2 years in this death factory, he managed to escape to report to the Home Army command (the Home Army is the largest underground resistance organization in history during World War II). He fought in the Warsaw Uprising, and when in 1945 in Yalta the Big Three handed over Poland to Stalin, he was tried as a war criminal and shot with practically no right to defence. Sorry for my English. Greetings to the creators of the channel, I am glad that you are expanding knowledge about the world among Americans.

I would recommend a book titled "The Volunteer". Its a book written using his actual journal entries and the reports he wrote while incarcerated in the camp. A fascinating and heartbreaking story, truly.
