@@Corrupted_flesh Yeah. I would like to add to this and say that I was on accutane for longer than 10 months and I never had to sign papers, get a pregnancy test, get a blood test every month, be on the pill, or anything like that. Australian btw. Just another way that the American healthcare system is an actual trashfire. Sympathies to my American brothers and sisters and siblings.

Same! I had surgery a few years ago and the surgeon was trying to calm me down about the anesthesia by telling me its like being drunk and both him and the anesthesiologist paused for a second when I told them I had never been drunk. I was literally laying on the Operating table and these two 40 year old men started judging a 20 year old for never being drunk before. I get the same reaction about being a virgin at 24 and opting to sign a waver rather than getting the pregnancy test before imaging and tests. I get that some people lie about not being sexually active but most people don't have a reason to lie and are just made uncomfortable by the questioning.

@@jessip8654 I understand that but if I say I don't drink and am not sexually active I should be able to sign a consent to treatment form after acknowledging the risks if I am lying. If I sign the consent to treatment form the doctors are absolved of any wrongdoing if I have lied anyway so it makes no sense.

@anthail yeah, I'm in america and apparently people don't want to rock the boat and just do the tests. If its just a blood test I dont really care because usually Im getting stuck with a needle whenever I have an appointment anyway but if they want a urine analysis I get uncomfortable. The most common reason I get questioned is because I have to get regular PET scans which require a radioactive injection and magnets. I have to tell them about the likelihood of pregnancy and I immediately just tell them I will sign the consent to treatment in lieu of a test. Co pay for a PET scan is $3000 and I don't need the added $450 charge dragging my credit down even lower. Regardless the nurse always has a heavy look of skepticism and wariness when I say I know I can just sign the form.

Shit like this insults women's intelligence. You know if you're sexually active and you know if you'd ever keep a pregnancy. If you decide to go on it even after being told that it'll cause birth defects then you're either certain you're not going to get pregnant or are comfortable with aborting it if need be. The extra requirements are so patronizing and remind me of the shit they do to women that want to get sterilized.

I was on accutane for 6 months when I was only 15. It was the most miserable 6 months of my life. Every joint in my body felt like it was bone scraping on bone, I had to quit playing sports because I felt like an old man. Also, my skin was drier than Antarctica. The monthly blood tests sucked as well, BUT the treatment did actually work and I went from having the most disgusting acne filled skin to perfect skin. Btw, you skin looks incredible.

I was on Accutane! Probably almost a decade before Amanda, because I have another medication that caused cysts. I had the unfortunate side effect of my CHOLESTEROL skyrocketing. I remember the phone call, because I was out of the house, left on the answering machine on a FRIDAY. Nurse said to stop taking the drug immediately, if I began having chest pain to go to the ER, it was 'likely' a heart attack. Uhm, what? My LDL went from 130 to 752 in a few days. I mean, I get it, I was one of those few *extreme* reactions. I was in the iPledge program. Conehead baby warnings all over the packaging, it was insane. Never had any warnings about mental changes. I ended up with the weekly blood work (reactions) and urine pregnancy test, and using OLIVE OIL as a moisturizer. FFS. I'm glad you had a good reaction though! I know SO MANY do! I was just the... extreme.

Accutane is an incredibly strong drug and it should never be glorified as the magic cure for skin issues. The whole narrative of "oh, you have some pimples? Just get on accutane!" is terrible. The side effects of accutane can be INTENSE and last you a lifetime. (Edit to clarify things: I do not condone or criticize anyone for taking it! If you outweighed the pros and cons, go for it, I fully support you. I was just criticizing glorification of it and the danger of risks not being taken seriously.)

Holy balls I had no idea accutane had such an intense screening process. I feel like this is yet another eye-opening picture of the US health care system that we make a medication like accutane, which can have serious consequences, having an intense education and screening process BUT you can STILL get opioid prescriptions from doctors and hospitals with little to no education or discussion 🙃
@floralthief
@floralthief 4 жыл бұрын
it absolutely depends on that. i have chronic pain and opioids are the only thing that works (aside from medicinal weed, which isn’t legal here lol) and because my pain is so bad, they don’t get me high. at all. yet i cannot get them without at least 3 of my doctors signing off on it, and can’t get enough at a dingle time to be able to overdose (so way less than a month), in which i have to get the doctors to sign off on it again. it SUCKS lol
@Larissa-qg9se
@Larissa-qg9se 4 жыл бұрын
The reason why it’s such a lengthy process is that it’s a teratogen. They do this with multiple medications that have such a high risk of serious and dangerous birth defects. Men on accutane also have to agree to use at least one form of birth control. Also with opioids to take them continuously you have to see a doctor every 3 months (for the strong stuff) and 6 months for any controlled substance.

Honestly, I appreciate your reviews because I get tired of bullshit. People tend to leave out so much info or make things into something they’re not. You are thorough, clear, and honest which doesn’t come around a lot in a world of sponsorships, brand deals, and brand partnerships (obviously accutane didn’t sponsor you but I think you get the point). I’d rather hear someone’s honest shitty experience than “oh my entire face fell off but it wasn’t so bad.” Even though your experience wasn’t awesome, you cleared a lot of “what if” anxiety and let us know what to expect. I can't thank you enough for this video!! There's such a stigma around adult acne and its treatments, I'm so glad someone is talking about their experience. I had super clear skin as a teen, and then when I hit 22, I started developing very severe adult acne. I tried so many "tips and tricks" that people would recommend (I can't tell you how many times I was told to just cut out dairy and drink more water. I know it works for some people, but neither of those did anything for my skin). It just got progressively worse and worse for nearly 2 years, until I finally broke down and saw a dermatologist who prescribed me the correct medication. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

My first job in law, before I went to law school, was as a paralegal in a firm that did a lot of drug side effect lawsuits. Accutane was one of their big ones. Allegedly, the risk of suicidal thoughts was understated when it first came out. Not saying you shouldn't take the drug, just saying make sure you understand the risks and talk it over with your doctor. EDIT: Good to hear they've made changes. Still, make sure you fully understand everything.

I did have to get blood tests to check liver function but I don't remember about birth control or pregnancy restrictions (as a male it may have never been brought up to me). My side-effects were mild with only nose bleeds and dry face. Cleared my face up and never had issues again. The mood swings and suicidal thoughts warning was given but said to be so rare that I shouldn't worry (now we know it's not so rare and needs to be monitored). Even though it worked for me I would still try other methods of treatment before going on it. Knowing the possible side-effects and possible long term effects now, to me, it feels like a final step in treatment.

Wow I’m so sorry it didn’t go smoothly. I’m a 22 year old guy and I started accutane at 21 because I was still getting acne at my age too. I actually asked for it and my dermatologist was like ok since we tried spot treatment and it did it work. Maybe it’s because I’m a guy but I only had to get my blood tested every two months. I stared at 10mg for a month then 20 , then 40 and finally 60 for the last 7 months. I didn’t get any side effect except chapped lips and the very last month eczema but she gave me a cream for that. Also, I never encountered mood swings or suicidal thoughts. I’d even say it was the opposite since I was so embarrassed by my acne before, that seeing my skin clean up gave me such a boost of confidence and overall made me so much more happy. I think even if I had more side effects it’s still go through it because this stuff is magical. Also since in my country we have good healthcare I didn’t have to pay for it at all

It’s wild to me that they came right out of the gate suggesting accutane to you, my dermatologist was trying pretty much everything else and I actually ended up having to point blank say I wanted to be put on it. Anyway, it helped me a lot, I’ve been off it for about a year and it was totally worth it.

Thank you for sharing! I was on this as well and it fixed things so well for me, but as a guy... I really didn't have it quite as rough, still needed blood tests for liver & kidney function, though. I experienced most of your side effects but I've been clear and off of it a year now, but one side effect has persisted, sadly: longer heal times and scarring from cuts, but I think the scarring has gotten *so* much better than it was. Also even if you aren't on acutane (Claravis) sunscreen, sunscreen SUNSCREEN! Future you will thank you for having nicer skin than people your age that don't. Be safe and healthy everyone!

Last year around Feb 2019 my dermatologist prescribed me doxycycline monohydrate. I took it until June-ish 2019 and my skin really cleared up. It stayed clear until August of this year where the same type of acne came back :/ So my doctor put me back on it again and my skin thankfully cleared up after 3 months. However she said that if it comes back or gets worse again, I'm gonna have to start accutane. I'm really hoping this won't be the case. I've always been so nervous about accutane but this video was v informative and cleared up some misconceptions I had. Thanks!

When you said "listen to your dermatologist" I had a flashback of one that told me to use the CeraVe cleanser and then you mentioned it and I have to share this with people just because of how bad of a reaction I had to it. I had a first degree burn all over my face the day after using it for the first time... I'm assuming there was something I didn't know I was allergic to in the product (it was years ago, Idk if the formula is the same and I'm not willing to try it again) but I have no idea what it was. I've never had such a bad reaction to anything before or after. I'm not saying don't try CeraVe just because I had a bad reaction but please please please don't go straight into using ANY product on your face or eyes. Do a test on a small patch of skin and if you get any sort of bad reaction, don't use it. Be safe.

sorry to butt in, but i had a somewhat similar experience. i didn't have a reaction bad enough that i got a *burn* but the cerave foaming cleanser for normal-oily skin gave me THEE worst breakout of my life to the point where i was ashamed to show my face ANYWHERE. i'm sorry about your experience with your cleanser, but i find solace in that i'm not alone in my experiences with cerave. i didn't truly realize that what works for one person may not work for another and that i should patch-test first, and having a cerave product not work for me when it worked for so many people was so isolating.

Interesting video! I never knew what it was like taking Accutane. I'm personally using adapalene (another vitamin A derivative like Accutane, but not nearly as strong) and I've been having great success with it! Since it's a gel you apply to your face, it doesn't have the side affect of drying out your whole body. However, my face is more sensitive to sunlight so I definitely wear sunscreen. It's also available over-the-counter, so it's much more accessible, too. I have no idea if pregnant women can use it (I'm a man, so it's something I haven't considered before). I should add, for anyone reading, even though it's available over the counter, I'd still recommend talking to a dermatologist to see if its appropriate for you; I started using it because my dermatologist prescribed it to me. I'm glad you had great success! Your skin looks great!

I was able to take Vitamin D, which was good because on Accutane dropped my D levels to almost 0, but a daily supplement helped. Also, my worst side effect was menstruation issues, just from everything being so dry, I had less bleeding but that caused such bad cramps. but also its not that bad lol

Though, I don't really get the severe spots of acne anymore. It's interesting how everyone's experience is so different! I did have an allergic reaction which shut down my body before they put me on accutane. That TERRIFIED me. I literally could not sit up in bed. I couldn't move my neck to drink water. I was stuck laying on the bed. But that was NOT accutane. Accutane was nice for all the warnings they give you.

If you’re having issues with dry lips, try making your own lip balm with very moisturizing oils and waxes. I make mine with beeswax and mixture of coconut oil and shea butter (more shea and beeswax in summer for a more solid heat resistant balm, more coconut in winter for a more moisturizing balm since the cold keeps it rather solid), but you could use olive oil or any heavy oil as well for something super moisturizing. It works better than anything petroleum based and it’s super easy to make. My summer mix was usually somewhere around 65-70% beeswax (by volume with the little pellets) and 35-30% oil/butter. Winter mix was usually around 60% wax, 25-30% butter, and 10-15% oil. I just did this all by eye since I’ve been doing it so long but you can find recipes online. Honestly it’s made my lips feel so much better.

I was Accutane like 10 years ago, the old, really bad one. I'm already fair/dry skinned so that made so many of the issues worse. I had incredibly dry skin. I ended up having to get medicated lotion to keep from getting infections because my skin was coming off in like chunks, like when you get a 2nd degree sunburn. I also had some depression along side of it. I was already doing well enough mentally that I was able to get through it but it was pretty bad. The worst was one day when I fell asleep right after taking one of my pills. It started releasing in my throat and I woke up in the worst pain of my life. You know the thing I described with my skin? That happened on my throat and I had to have my parents rush me to the ER. I started overnight while they gave me fluids and some antibiotics to prevent infection. Luckily I went from awful cystic acne to never really having a pimple again. It was a rough 6 months (which was the max when I did it), but I am so glad with how my face looks now. I remember all the monthly blood tests and that packet they made you sign with the drawings of the horrible birth defects it can cause. I haven't started trying for kids, but there's a chance I could be sterile from it. I'm glad I can relate to someone else's experience, even if I'd rather you have never gone through it. Also great videos! I love your channel and binged all of your videos recently!

I use rose hip oil from The Ordinary! I love it, especially during the winter. I don't use it much during the summer, since it's so humid where I live. The hyaluronic acid is also good, but you MUST use it with a moisturizer. I love that brand, cause they sell skin care products that other companies over-hype and over-price, but at a way more affordable cost. The face moisturizer by Simple is also great. Many times I have tried switching up my moisturizer, buy something new, and then hate it cause it just doesn't "soak" into my skin as nicely.

I am slightly surprised that they put you on accutane so quickly. Like you mentioned in the video, it is usually the last resort option for treating acne. (Which was the case for me) And if your acne was hormonal acne birth control could have potentially cleared up your skin without jumping straight to accutane. I first started getting acne at 11, well before I even got my first period, and didn’t see a dermatologist until I was 14. And when we did they first gave me a low dose antibiotic and topical creams as treatment. That lasted for about a year then it stopped working. Was then given a diff antibiotic and creams which also lasted about a year. At this point I was 16 and we got a new dermatologist and she was very informative. She sat down with my mom and I got a solid 45 minutes discussing all our options and how acne is caused and the different types. We ultimately decided accutane would be the best long term solution. Th main differences in my experience from yours was that I did not have to go on birth control, at the end of month 1 I did experience the “big break out” affectionately called the pimple apocalypse the worst that my acne had ever been. I did not experience any nausea. I was told to never take the pills on an empty stomach. I took 2 pills a day one in the morning and one at night. I either immediately ate after taking the pill or I would eat before and then take the pills, but at the very least I was told drink milk or something with a bit of substance when taking the pill. My skin was super dry but I never experienced any type of the peeling that you mentioned. I’m now 20 almost 21 and my skin stayed clear up until about 3-4 months ago, it has gotten pretty bad again but I’m pretty sure it has to do with stress. But accutane, the side effects, and the possible birth defects are no joke. Especially the birth defects, my understanding is that if you get pregnant while on Accutane it is almost guaranteed there will be some type of major birth defect. My dermatologist also explained that it takes about a month for your body to fully regulate with the medication. And when you finally get off Accutane it can take anywhere from one month to even sometimes up to three months before it fully flushes out of your system.

Hey Amanda, just a fan here. I don't get acne much any more, but my skin has more scar tissue due to eczema than an unwrapped basket ball :) I am proud for you that you got, received, and moved past the parts that may people just cringe about, i.e. blood draws and tests. as us humans get more evolved, it is almost a fact of life that each and every one will have more blood tests than our parents, them more than their parents, our kids more us us, and so on. i don't know if this is a compliment on your makeup skillz or my degenerate--degenerative? super bad??--eye site, your complexion never lept out towards me. you look great now, and i can't say i'd change that opinion. oh, and face moisturizers work, but you hit the long term solution on it's head, drink tons of water. It is funny, this stupid plague has made all of us think about what we *should* have been thinking of all along--wash/purell your hands 80 times daily, say it don't spray it, and nobody likes it for any reason to get up in someones face. lastly, i promisePromise!promise this will happen if it hasn't already, you *will* start to just not give a shit about bloodwork. It took me awhile, but after... (mental math...)... 280 blood tests over just under three months they just get soo routine. Heh, I tried and made sure blood draws were always from the same wrist, so I could have the dots concentrated on my left, and the scars from my mishaps, blood cathiters, and surgeries on my right. unfortunately i heal from scar tissue really fast, so oh well. :) glad you are done with that course, and things appear to be going your way!
