I think they sometimes forget when they take the makeup and wigs off that’s how a lot of them look as well (nothing wrong with that look btw) but they find issue in seeing women that look so similar to a look that they possess but don’t actually like.

I agree! Many bw do not think they look good unless they’re fully done up. But that creates a skewed view of their natural beautiful features. Even the women who claim to love their features and don’t wear makeup are still putting on silky curly and straight wigs

I'm a portrait photographer, and Annie Leibovitz is someone whose work I adored WAY before I had any inkling of being a photographer! A lot of people do not understand her lighting and creative style. My work has her type of look, though I am far from being as amazing as she is. I believe people are criticizing what they do not comprehend.

If you took that profile picture then I think you’re doing a beautiful job!! And yes, people don’t understand the medium so they’re running to what they do understand instead to criticize her. It’s creating a false equivalency that I don’t think Annie deserves after taking such stunning photos.

Her style isn't really just dark and grungy. You can Google Annie's work and it is not one dimensional. I can't weigh in on all the particulars or demonizing a photographer, but it's well known in the industry that there is lighting that works better with darker skin, ask any cinematographer. It's up to the creator and the subject to decide what they are comfortable with.

Yes the interviewer is a black woman and it was a video. Law said he didn’t see a problem with Coco’s photos and the interviewer kept saying “no” or that he should’ve kept that to himself

I rlly hate when BP do shxt like that, act like everyone has to be a monolith, like, “you MUST have the exact same opinion abt this matter / person” otherwise they make you seem like YOU’RE the we*rdo Blk person. issue I have with the posing thing is as a photographer, if you know that the person you’re taking photos of isn’t a model or an actor who’s probably had photos taken of them for years. Isn’t it your job to direct the posing so that it doesn’t look awkward and they don’t look out of place in the photo. I think that’s especially seen in Coco and Serena’s photos more so Coco cause she’s younger and isn’t really used to having photos taken of her like that. She looks awkward, so I do feel like it is the photographer job to correct that.

Good point! Though on the flip side if the posing doesn’t get much better and time is money (she’s known to not waste time) I can see her choosing the best of the worst. Maybe the photos of Coco or Serena they didn’t pick were reallyyyy awkward. Plus, not all celebrities take direction well and think they’re doing just fine. I’m not there doing the shoot so I can’t say, but I doubt she had their worst interests in mind considering other people chose to just stand and look pretty instead of trying to pose like a model.

I think those photos are beautiful. It feels very raw and rich in atmosphere. Coco looked heavenly. It’s important to understand the intention of each photo. I don’t know all of her work, or her beliefs, but the criticisms your mentioning seems to be coming from a place of insecurity boarding on self hatred. It’s ok to simply not like something. It reminds me that there use to be a narrative that black people shouldn’t be under blue/purple lighting. I think movies like moonlight helped showcase that’s not the case. It’s sad to see some black women encourage limiting ourselves, and even dehumanizing us. We are human and our imperfections are beautiful.

Completely agree! I’d hate for black woman to completely avoid this style because they think it’s unflattering to their skin tone. That’s incredibly limiting
