Ohio is known for the Buckeye trees. There are also buckeyes which is a peanut butter and chocolate confection. Check out Mally's Chocolates.

Oklahomans are referred to as Sooners (Boomer Sooners). During the 1880s, they had land claim races in the Oklahoma territory for free/low-cost land. The parcels were staked and the starting pistol shot and the race was on. You were a "SOONER" if you jumped the gun. If you got to a parcel of land and grabbed the stake, you could sign the deed and it was yours.

@shep1948 The Indian Nation Territories still belong to their tribes nowadays. Go drive through Oklahoma if you want to see the signs when you enter and leave each territory. The unassigned parcels in 1889 bordered these territories.

People heading out west in early days would stop in Indiana to stock up for the long journey. Indiana was the frontier back then. Indianians would ask the pioneers “who’s your state?” meaning are you from New York or Pennsylvania etc. My best friend in high school was from Longansport IN and they all said the same thing about hoosier state.

A second name for Kansans is a Jayhawks, which comes from a civil war nickname it is also the mascot of Kansas University. Kansas State University is the wildcats, hence the saying Jayhawk by birth Wildcat by the grace of God. Jay walking is crossing the street illegally, and in the Civil War, jayhawking was crossing the Missouri state line illegally.

latejana, Haha, thankyou Jana, hadn't thought of that for some time. Back around '84-85, i was working for UncleSam, just transferred from Vieques Is., P.R. to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Was at a party one evening in base housing, listening to a dependent wife tell how when she arrived on base she was picked up by another wife to be taken to her house. As they drove thru housing see saw all these gallon jugs of brown liquid out on the walkways. She asked what they were and the woman said the commies would occasionally poison the drinking water, each house was required to give urine samples, the base hospital would come by, collect and test them. She was freaked out and everyone laughed when she admitted how embarrassed she was to be taken in like that. So thankyou... ☆

Vermonters are called Woodchucks. They call neighboring states Hamsters, Massholes, and Maniacs. There was a book called The Woodchuck's Guide to Gardening which is when woodchuck was explained to me. Do you have garden pests?

I BELIEVE I heard that "Hoosiers" was the nickname given to those people who got to the land first in the great Midwest "land grab" in the 1800s when the Govt was giving away land for like, a dollar an acre or something. If I'm not correct, someone clue me in!
