Texas has one of the lowest high school graduation rates in the nation. It has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates and a startling 1 in 6 teens who gave birth already had another child. Yup...they led not just in teen births but also in teens having multiple births. When it comes to the poverty rate, Texas leads the national average ranking number 11th in poverty. Texas has ranked first for most worker deaths every year since 2015. On average over the past three years, at least one worker has died every day in a fatal occupational accident in Texas. Overall, Texas ranks 1st among states for total toxic pollutants released to air, land and water. There are only four states where voting is more restricted than Texas so, not surprisingly, voter participation is ranked 41st in the nation. A recent study by the libertarian Cato Institute measuring how all 50 states compared on a variety of personal and economic freedoms found that Texas was dead last for personal freedom. The list goes on and on but "YeeHaw" we like HEB. eye roll

HEB has it's own disaster response unit. When hurricanes or floods hit the coast, the HEB 18 wheeler trucks roll into town with industrial sized generators, food, and other critical supplies. HEB's will try to stay open as long as possible even when the parking lots are flooded out. People will show up needing food and/or water which HEB will supply. When Hurricane Ike hit and Houston was out of power for almost a month, HEB had rolled in a few days after the storm had passed and set up emergency food kitchens and power. People would show up just to get some cold A/C from the heat and humidity. There were images of people paddling in on small rafts to get food sometimes. HEB also tries to buy as much of their food from local sources so a number of farms contract with the company to provide fresh produce, meat, and dairy.

When Snowpocalypse occurred in Texas, the Randall’s near my home was closed. It lost its power, and all its refrigerated foods had to be thrown out. The HEB across the street had generators, and was open. Although there was a line down the block, shoppers were generally cooperative, and the employees did their best to serve everyone.

You nailed it! Not only are the store brands cheaper, there’s tons of them that I actually prefer over name brands. And not only are the employees helpful, so are the customers!! I can’t say enough good things about HEB! Oh, there’s an ALDI store right next door. The most cars I’ve counted there was 12. And that was at Christmas time. The HEB parking lot is always full. There’s one store that’s fairly close to the Louisiana state line. I’ve heard people will drive there to go to an HEB store. Texas and HEB rules!!

I have a cousin in North Texas. When her sister from the East Coast comes to visit, the one thing that's for sure on the agenda is a couple of visits to H-E-B. I live in a smaller town, but we still have an H-E-B. There's a Kroger across the street from H-E-B. Their parking lot is way easier to navigate than H-E-B's because there are fewer shoppers. H-E-B's parking lot is ridiculously difficult, yet Texans still prefer their H-E-B to all the others.

Whenever we were stationed outside of Texas with the Army, or living in other states for school or jobs, HEB was the Texan institution we missed the most. The regular stores are great, and some cities have HEB Central Market, which is a store filled with specialty, exotic, and gourmet items. They have their own disaster response team that shows up usually BEFORE Red Cross or FEMA, with what people in those situations actually need. (I remember one situation where they had a semi that had an office where people could get advice on how to report to FEMA and/or their insurance carriers, right there, right then.) Dallas was getting its first HEB, and was all a-twitter over it! So California has shared her In & Out burgers with us...and Texas is even sharing (soon!) its much beloved Buc-ee's with us (and Wisconsin is all a-twitter over THAT!) but I missed HEB by just a couple weeks, UGH! The pain! Though we DO have Woodman's up here, with an entire AISLE of ...cheese! 😀🧀

Native born Texan here. I got addicted to HEB brand soda. You know what I replaced it with? HEB brand sparkling water. They have fixes to problems

Their house-made tortilla chips are as good or better than any Mexican restaurant, and they are way cheaper than bagged chips! Love HEB!

The smartest thing H-E-B has done (so far) is not sold out to Kroger, like every other (formerly) great independent, regional grocery chain.

Try the TEO gelato at H‑E‑B. It’s a local Austin brand. The peanut butter flavor in particular is soooooo good. Thank me later.
