I've been trying to understand for a long time why anyone would want to scale a business like this. You just give away your margins. The only way to do it would probably be all large commercial accounts with high employee turnover and nonstop headaches

This is exactly what we just went through. We grew from 0 to 1.5 in one year and just scalled back everything stopped rushing through jobs chasing a sales high. Let go of under performers and everything is starting to look so much better. I am so happy I got to see this

This is my third year in business with a tree service and I'm looking to break 200k this next month to end the year. So yesterday morning i learned I'll be awarded a 400k tree clearing/climbing contract. I'm still shell-shocked and as nothing is yet signed I've mostly been keeping that news to myself until we iron out some minor details and sign. I really appreciate catching this video right now!

Be careful! That's a huge jump and make sure you aren't so busy with the large job you lose your momentum on the jobs the got you to current place. You can lose your shorts on a large job quickly and also have a large opportunity cost if you have nothing after the huge contract.... Has this happen to me in construction..... Good luck though! Hope it works out well.
@capogiraffeАй бұрын
@@dustinmarquand5301 Yeah some good points. I'm back and forth with it and sometimes wonder if I should even take it. The climbing portion I feel confident about, it's the land clearing that has the potential to be costly if my numbers are out.
@dustinmarquand5301Ай бұрын
@@capogiraffe could you split the contract somehow? Good climbers are much harder to find than land clearing companies... At least around here. (Twin cities)

I think you should do it. But you do want to see if you won it because you were super low though most entities that are willing to pay that much on a project would not award it to a company, knowing they messed up the bid because they would be left with a problem not just you. Keep up the good work 💪

My goal next year is 2 full time laborers, and a full time VA. Possibly a full time marketer. Do about 500k. This year we did about 140k and I was solo until a month ago. Window cleaning/christmas lights.

Hey Mike! This is a great video. However, you mention that once you hand it off to a general manager you should cut off the marketing when you are past $800k. Your locations you run and own with general managers I assume are over $800k. Why are you still running your LSA for them? Is it because you want to have large locations or are you just replacing churn with higher paying clients. Just curious is all.

@@MikeAndes thanks for responding, sounds like we battle the same marketing addiction a little bit lol. I have a hard time leaving them off even though you are correct it just shreds through the net income. My company is above $800k. I just get bored I think.

What Salary would you anticipate a GM of a $800k maintenance biz.?
@lylesathoffracing8l412Ай бұрын
It would be a good idea to start benchmarking RPE or Revenue Per Employee and try to compare yours with others in the industry. A general rule of thumb for companies under 1,000,000 in revenue is a revenue of $43,000 per employee. This will be another tool in your toolbelt to determine if you need to increase prices if you are at capacity like Mike mentions or if you need to potentially scale back on underperforming employees to stay efficient. Now, when you start talking about the salary for a GM, 20-50% higher than the people they are managing would be a good starting point. In some industries, like the tech world, it's not uncommon for employees to make more than their managers due to their skills.
@primarypools8053Ай бұрын
Would you consider 500k only in the reoccurring revenue or would that be total revenue with bigger jobs included?

Definitely per employee. It’s me and one employee and $75 per man is where we like to be that way on a full 7-8 hour day if we can generate $150 an hour we can clear $1000 a day
