Well everyone…I was wrong. About Potemkin. At Texas Showdown 2023, Snake Eyez made history by showing us that any character can win a major Guilty Gear Strive tournament, even if it’s a terrible grappler character. Here is my reaction to the Top 8 and sets from players like Snake Eyez, LordKnight, Zippy, and more!

I mean, Snake Eyez enlighted to the public that Potemkin is actually something that you can win a Tournament with, he has enough tools to punish well and erase Health bars like how he should, he is defo on the Mid-tier shenanigans in like 3rd Strike Hugo, they can take lots of hits while hitting like trucks, but still have it hard to approach so and are mistake-reliant.

Yea bro 100%, using one off tournment results is not a good metric of character strength. Now if that character places well consistently and a larger percentage of places are filled by that character (relative to characters popularity), that says something. But a one off does not mean much. Tired of dude saying that X character is broken because single player placed well once.

I think the reason a lot of people don’t consider Pot that good even with hos damage is it’s not that hard to get damage like that with most characters in this game. Honestly my mind still gets blown by how much damage a raw Volcanic Viper does

Well, the thing is that some match-ups for Pot are simply a nightmare. Zoners in any capacity have his number for almost free. The thing is, that is the job... you fail for even a second, you have to deal with a mauling big man with that damage. It doesn't last long.

Zangief, Potemkin, Iron Tager, King of Dinosaurs, Ladiva, Kanji. They all teach how to block like a god. So once a grappler is comfortable with their character, the non-grappler has to try twice as hard for a confirm, and still get the combo off when they do. I feel like a mid level grappler player can beat higher level people who don't know the match up. But ultimately I feel like it's a rock, paper, scissors situation most of the time. I'll dog most of the cast in SF6 using Gief, but JP makes me want to ritualistically un-alive myself.

1:47 That's because Pot needs it for his CMD Grab to be worth it. He can do similar or more DMG with just his combos and get better Oki than the Grab offers. Pot is a meter expensive character and he needs the meter to get in and stay in against those high level players. He's a different animal when meter is on the screen.
@slainmaster1997
@slainmaster1997 Жыл бұрын
Also Fast Cancel PRC doesn't apply the penalty to meter gain that you'd get otherwise if you let the PRC rock. So if you get good at Fast Cancel PRC Buster not only does that let you threaten Buster from even more situations and slightly better distance than Kara Buster (especially out of Hammerfall), you also get nearly refunded on meter spent for the PRC depending on how quickly you did the Fast Cancel.
@uchihajunior5648
@uchihajunior5648 Жыл бұрын
The reason potemkin builds so much meter is becouse he doesn't have a ragular dash, airdash or a run, i think it's the case even before strive, the fewer regular movement options a character have the bigger is their avarege meter gain, like giovanna that can dash but can't run gaining more meter per combo then other combo heavy characters, potemkin's case is more extreme becouse he can't foward dash, he can't run and he can't airdash, so everything he do build a shit ton of meter, the same for nagoriyuki.

Not any justification but just legit explaining why he was able to do that full screen. Giganter Kai (Shock Barrier), has a lifetime of 464 frames, OR after it hits 3 times. So you're either giving up the full screen, or fuzzy blocking Giganter Kai (assuming you don't have a way through it, eg I-No's Stroke the Big Tree can go underneath the barrier).

Grapplers also get a major tournament buff, same with zoners. Adrenaline and fear mixed with knowing your time to adapt is extremely limited puts pressure on people, which causes them to default into patterns and play more risk adverse, both of which benefit the grappler player, and the zoner to a lesser extent.
@OldManSilencer
@OldManSilencer Жыл бұрын
Why does potemkin get so much meter after prc grab? he rapid cancels the prc for the command grab which cuts the meter gain penalty in half. he completely recovers from the meter penalty of using a prc by the time he gains the meter for potemkin bustering so he's awarded the full meter gain for the throw. they could nerf it but probably shouldn't because outside of already being in potemkin has relatively bad meter gain just playing neutral and needs to commit to gain meter despite being a meter hungery character this allows his offense to snowball well while not allowing him to have bursts of activity from meter gain in neutral except after a slower gain. I know that kizzie knows this but most people watching probably don't The baiken far slash that whiffed is because garuda is very disjointed. it is visually deceptive but like so are reversals and 6ps due to just hurt boxes. garuda kinda needs to be disjointed like that for some of potemkin's offense structure to work with the spacing traps that it creates. visually it is dumb and it looks like potemkin should be hit but it's not the only example of weird looking interactions but potemkin also kinda needs that otherwise large parts of how he backs up situations sort of fall apart and people would just be mashing 6P in a lot of his block strings. like every time someone blocked a 6k if garuda didn't retract like that you could just mash 6p and i'd punish him doing nothing, hit flick and garuda which would mean that he couldn't 6k unless it was really far away which is a huge staple of how he builds out offense and that's just one situation of that being important. right now you have to jump garuda either on a read, reaction, or fuzzy all of which can be targeted by flick. again I know kizzie knows this and if this were like a break down video instead of a highlighted watch along he could express these points.

The big thing Potemkin is missing from the past is his crouching slash used to be fewer frames and it had a vacuum effect (lol) so yeah imagine that with all the RC's. A few other things are just slower or lower damage . Potemkins forward HS used to hit like ... An ultimate on low HP chars and like a heavy special move on higher ones. His throws and specials were nice but I. No way needed in games before xrd.

Potemkin players need to go play jump force or some other baby-mode fighting game, and both Pot's busters need heavy nerfs, especially since with the new update you can get heavenlied off of his 6P (the prayer clap) counter-hit or not, which is an 11 frame unreactable move with upper body invincibility. "oh he's so slow!" It doesn't matter. You are playing Pot's game now, and each mistake is going to cost you 40-60% of your heath bar. And if you take your time , poking when you can and playing safe? He gets meter, send out a shield wall, and forces most characters to either jump into a command grab or 6p, eat damage from the wall and ensuing megafist, or face a 50/50 that ends with another Potemkin buster. "He doesn't do well at higher tiers!" Of course not, high ranked players tend to make less mistakes, drop less combos, and know their matchups. A Potemkin player relies on his opponents mistakes and/or ignorance of the game and has multiple very easy to do methods to punish them. This is, fundamentally, BAD character design. Fighting games aren't balanced around the lower tier of players and there's good reasons for that, but somehow people will still defend the character that has been meticulously crafted to be oppressing ONLY to less experienced players while being almost useless in higher ranks. I would sooner get my ass handed to me 2-0 double perfect by a top 100 Ram 1000 times over than play a match against a Potemkin any floor above 5, because even if I win I still have to play Pot's game when I would like to be playing GGST.

I think that the point kizzie is making in this video pretty useful to be aware off as a community both for the grappler players and anyone that fights them. Like just because Pot is the worst character in the game doesnt mean that he can't win. Especially because Pot is NOT the worst character in the game if you DONT KNOW how to properly fight and pick your options against a good Pot player Pot is really good at what he does and if you think that there's a predetermined win chance you have that is less just bcs you play Pot then that is only true if you BOTH know the mu perfectly. He is not by any means good on paper but people are downplaying Pot too much in my opinion, accept your loses and stop blaming your character, there's always something you could have done better and always a way that your opponent outplayed you.
