I bought the 16" Max 32 cores and 32 GB 4TB - because I was fearing the 14" would overheat on regular tasks which I HATED on my 13" intel. When I received it I was a bit laid down by the size and weight compared to the 13" I was used to. Fast forward 2 months later ... I love this Mac, and would pick the 16" any day. I got used to the size and now all the other laptops and their small screens really seem too small to work on. The heat is very moderate and I have never heard the fan once! The screen is great, the size, the luminosity, the keyboard, the speakers are so great. And man .. 4TB ... I have a lot of sound banks for music productions and still 2TB free. Overall best Mac I ever had.

Fully agree. The 16" is full comfort when using it, even on a couch or in bed (combination of screen real estate + less noise + less heat). These main advantages easily compensate for the more weight drawback, at least to me. Coming from a 2014 15" MBP, it practically makes almost no difference. And silver of course. I struggled with 32 vs 64 GB of ram. I went with the 64 GB even though it took an extra month and a half to arrive. I don't regret it one bit. 16GB was always a limiting factor for me on the 2017 MPB. 32 just didn't offer enough head room for the next few years. I had a silver Retina MBP for 7 years and I didn't notice dust and crumbs so often or that severe. My current laptop, now 7 years old and needing replacement, was a top spec Dell 16inch with 4K display. I've owned, and traveled with, 17 inch laptops so 16 inch isn't a problem for me particularly since these newer laptops with minimum bezels are smaller than earlier generation laptops with 15 inch screens. I have an order for a 16 inch MacBook Pro Max with 64GB RAM and 2TB storage which is only lacking the even larger storage options of up to 8TB. Here's my reasoning for this model versus, say, the Pro with 16GB or 32GB ... I don't upgrade every year and as I mentioned before, my current laptop is 7 years old, so getting a laptop that will last me longer makes more sense than buying a lower spec model but replacing it a year earlier. Let's say a lower spec model lasts me 4 years and the one I order lasts me 5 years, after 4 years I'd get a new unit more powerful than the higher spec model I ordered BUT a year later, if I went with the higher spec model, I'd get a new unit even more powerful than the one a year earlier. And, for 4 of 5 years I'd have had the more powerful model all along. It's hard to make a pure economic evaluation, but if the higher spec model gets you one more year then the delta cost is kind of a wash. I should mention that mu current Dell laptop has been very good but the touchpad has been delaminating for a year or more and at this point is mostly useless -- I use an external mouse. I also have a 6 year old desktop I built for video and image editing as well as CAD work and it to is getting a little long in the tooth so replacing my current laptop AND desktop with a new laptop more powerful than both just makes even more sense.
@harrison00xXx2 жыл бұрын
the problem with your argument... We are talking more or less about the "1st Gen" of Apples ARM CPUs... If the M1 Pro is getting outdated and "too slow", you better dont hope for the M1 Max to be "fast enough" for another year, its probably already "as slow" as the M1 Pro. Thats btw the biggest problem i have with this generation of Macs... as much i like them (and ordered a 16" base model)... they will probably be the first Macs next to the regular M1 chip to be outdated. I have also upgraded my 2010 MacBook Pro. With fast SSD, maxxed out Ram.. but OUTDATED ARCHITECTURES are not getting usable again with "more power". And as sad it is... if the M1 Pro is outdated, the Max will be too, especially since the CPU is more or less the same while the biggest difference is the GPU.

I am not a gamer or a power user but my mid-2012 MBP has taught me that the more RAM I have, the more likely it will last as long as the current one has. However, in the UK, it's a 1 month delivery from order cycle. Also, I am wondering what the M2 chip will bring and, finally, my iPad Pro 9.7" 1st Gen is also reaching obsolescence because of its lack of RAM so I may have to update that. And I'm not made of money. I continue to procrastinate.

I like the idea of 14 inch for price and less looks in public, but 16 inch seems to be the one I really need as it will be my main computer. I'm a DJ and just got a base model 16 inch MacBook Pro. I usually use it connected to my mixing console that has SSDs attached to it with all my music and have been used to using 512GB OS drives for many years so it ticked the boxes for me. I love the size so far! Moving over from a 13 inch MacBook Pro. I also absolutely love the keyboard, in fact, I think the new keyboards in this generation of laptops is my favourite part

I’ve bought a device with too small a screen a few times too. Like laptops and apple watches. The smaller more portable size makes sense in the moment when I’m buying it. But i always regret it later. The only device that I like a little smaller is an iPhone because i have to carry it everywhere in my pocket. It’s the one time I’m not jealous of a larger screen because you can’t do more with it.

new M1 MacBook Pros - "16" and 14" tonight. The body is squared off and thicker than my 2019 MBP. WHAT??? And it feels cheap, not like the former Airplane Grade aluminum. You knock on it and it feels hollow-ish. And the bottom feet are harder than previous models, almost like a cell phone case that is hard plastic and sort of hits the desk too hard. I am pretty disappointed. Why, Apple, Why?

I wish there was a more black and white to this but damn there just isnt lol. At home i work on a 27" display anyway but when i am on the go or at the offive its built in display only and then i feel the burden of BOTH 16" feeling unweildy and large as hell but in the same token 14" screen feeling very cramped. I can see why you like it. I have 2nd guessed my choice of the 14" when it was revealed just how poorly cooled it is. But I didn't buy a MAX so it's not throttling, the fans don't "come on", and the thing is darn fast. I also want to be able to watch it on the plane and the 16" is too big for that. The battery life isn't all that great, but 90% of the time it's connected to an outlet anyway. So I'm loving the laptop but REALLY missing gaming a bit on bootcamp. They really need to get that Windows ARM license sorted out asap. Apple has already said it's no problem to do it.

The question is now.... what are you doing with it? I also ordered the M1 Pro "only"... but since all i do is watching movies/series, web browsing and a little bit photoshop (with mainly astrophotography)... there is absolutely no way that i even use 10% of its capabilities. Ofc im a bit worried about the future because of the 16GB shared Ram, also a bit about the 512GB SSD only, but since i have my data anyways on external m.2 drives with TB/USB-C... i think i can get away with the cheapest 16" model (im planning anyways to abuse it as long and hard as possible as i did with my 2010 MacBook Pro until today...) I know - even the regular M1 is for 95% of the people overkill. The M1 Pro already for 98% at least, The Max for 99%+. Even when it comes to the content creators, rendering etc, there is barely any reason for "needs" of a M1 Max.

I do mainly the same tasks that you do, and I've been contemplating which one to get. I had an M1 Macbook Air, which I loved, and was the best Windows laptop I had ever used. But the screen was too small. I loved the quiet, and I loved the portability. My previous laptop was a Dell Inspiron 17R, which weighs in at a hefty seven pounds or so. So I think the 16" will work just fine. My ideal configuration would be a Macbook Pro 16 with a Max chip (for future proofing) and 32 gig of RAM and 2 or 4 gigs of disk space. I do use Lightroom CC to process RAW images, so while speed is not imperative, a speed boost would be welcome. The Air that I had was 1.5 times faster than my current i5 PC desktop. Thanks for the review/comparison/explanation. Much appreciated.

I still prefer having the 14" (not necessarily fully spec’d) I’ve played with both the 16" and 14" at the store, while they both looked thicker than previous ones, and the 16" felt very bulky while holding it up and putting it back on the table, BUT MY QUESTION IS : are the new MBPs more prone to dings, for me the aluminum didn’t seem to be machined like the previous ones, and the screen lids wobble like crazy especially the 16" one, while the previous ones rock solid lids when bumping the table or putting them down… I still have the 15" from 2014 got it fully spec’d at the time, and after 8 years of use it handled bumps extremely well and the lid doesn’t wobble at all, even if you force it, it wobbles for like a split second and stops, the new ones especially the lids, feel less sturdy to me, and if they make the new Airs like that too, I think I’m gonna get a fully spec’d MBA before they change to the new design… sorry for my long comment but I was really wondering if anyone else noticed that and your experiences using the new MBPs with the new aluminum chassis/lids, THANKS!

Ya, you can't get use to the size looking in the store but no I have not seen excessive screen wobble. You saw this on multiple display models?
@baroum.3 жыл бұрын
@@JerrySchulze you’re right about the size long term, but I’m using a 2014 15" and also I have a late 2013 11" MBA (got it because it reminded me of that 12" PowerBook I couldn’t afford back in the day :) The size is a matter of preference… but about the wobble, yeah I’ve tested it on many MBPs and in many shops, the lids wobble a LOT more than my 8 years old 15" and my girlfriend’s pre-M1 13" MacBook Air (which I find the more robust of all MacBooks) , both rock solid. I’ve been looking around on the net also it seems that the m1 MacBook Airs have more fragile lids than the previous ones too, that’s a shame because the unibody was revolutionary when it started and improved the build quality and the design in general dramatically, don’t get me wrong, I love the new design and all kinds of MacBooks, I never sell my old ones I collect them, but it bugs me when they take a step backwards, in this case the device seems less robust to me…

I just recieved my 16" with m1 pro and 32gb RAM after my 2019 16" with core i9 and 32GB RAM literally died after two years of constant issues. Pretty sure it was just getting too hot to often, with medium workload. Thankfully Apple saw the long list of attempts to find what the problem was with the 2019 model, and they offered to replace my 2019 beast at no cost. And I could not be more satisfied with this new model. The screen is SO much better. The keyboard is a pleasure to use. And with some heavy use to put it through its paces and see how this Apple silicon performs, I'm not only impressed with the noticeable performance jump, but the battery life improvement was so obvious I would have even paid money for the upgrade. Then after already being blown away by the screen and performance jump, I couldn't believe that I hadn't heard to fans turn on at all. The i9 model was SO dissapointing becuase it was so obvious that processor was just not good for the smaller form factor. Then on top of it all is the improvement in build quality and better proportianed chassis. The squared off edges, additional ports, thin bezel, is well just spot on. Reminded me of that feeling of when I first touched my iphone 4. It feels sexy. It looks sexy. It feels like its worth the money, where my 2019 i9 almost made me start thinking of going back to PC since I didn't see the advantage of build quality of 2010-2015 type mbp's. Well done Apple. Im confident this will be a 10 year laptop like my 2012 was.

Nice. I did the same, and similarly for music production. I had a gold MBA M1 (16GB ram, 1TB) for about 4 weeks of daily use, before sending it back. It's a great machine, both design-wise and performance. However, that 13.3" after more than 10 years using 15.4" or at least 22" external widescreen monitors .... NO, you don't "get used to it", as a few users of MBA M1 have promoted. It's still another 3 weeks wait for my MBP, ordered in January, but implementing a 100% mobile set-up (whenever necessary) is the objective. For those reasons, including those you mentioned, my choice is well justified.

Jerry, I went hog wild when the M1-Max hit the street and purchased the 16" with 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and no extra applications. I also purchased the LAST 16", Intel chip and find it nice but no real comparison with the M1-Max chip. The weight is not an issue with me, as I use both just about everywhere and like you, became accustomed to the size, weight and performance. I really appreciate the longer battery life with the Max vice the Intel processor. I get about 8 hours with the INTEL and over 15 hours with the MAX. like you said, pricy, but when you get the hardware that is custom designed with the OS, you have a winning pair and the lifespan of the MAC over any other PC on the market cannot be beat. I really enjoy my mac's and I just wish that Apple had kept the Touch Bar feature. The Intel model has it where the Max does not. That little "gee wiz" feature is a nice add on that I like, but can live without.

I've always had two Mac , a desktop and a MacBook Pro , and my older MacBook Pro from 2017 was starting to feel sluggish , and same for my iMac with intel. , so I've tried every machine from Apple , at first it was the mini M2 pro , then I switched to a Mac Studio M1 Max, then when the M2 max version was released like 2 months ago I've tried it , and I thought this would be the replacement for my iMac , but then I thought why not buy a MacBook Pro M2 max who can do both , using it as a desktop 90% of the time, and as a laptop for the 10% left , and I'm glad I made this choice , otherwise I would have kept the M2 max Studio for all the ports and cooling , but even if Apple let the M2 max heats up a bit more without the fan spinning ( they start spinning a little when most CPU's are above 100 degrees ( celsius ) . but it not an issue with TG Pro I can push the fan to the max when I encode dozens of video . this things screams . I would have loved it to have an extra thunderbolt 4 port tbh , but I'm happy that magsafe is back , and I love the space gray color ( I wish I could order a midnight color one like the MacBook Air ) personally I was tired a bit of silver for the MacBook Pro ...
