All this while pushing my code editor with about 8 Gb of ram and docker containers pushing 12 Gb of ram. It's like it's not even doing anything. The maximum swap memory I have been able to have it use is about 200 Mb. And I combine this with a 20000 mah powerbank and it gives me about 6 odd hours of power. Great video, Jerry. You ended up exactly where I thought you should end up based on the use case you described. The question of 14 inch versus 16 inch is something I’ve been struggling with myself. I went into the thought process pretty set on the 14 inch model. It’s lighter. It’s smaller. It’s clearly easier to travel with. But it’s not easier to use if you were working with Lightroom or Photoshop or Premiere Pro. As I thought about this, I realized that when I use my current 13 inch laptop for these tasks, I don’t really take the work seriously. The laptop tides me over until I can get back to my workstation. But the 16 inch is actually large enough that if I had to work remotely for an extended period of time, I could do it. So, to my surprise, I ended up going with the 16 inch despite all of the size and weight advantages that come with the 14. Of course, everyone has their own use case. This is just mine.

Any ‘real’ productivity will require a much larger display. At that point, there are so many options today that you are not restricted to just using Apple displays. Most higher end monitors are now compliant with Apple’s DCI-P3 color space. I personally own the Asus PG32UQX 1500HDR 4k 32 inch monitor and love it. Whatever you decide, you can’t go wrong with either Apple MacBook Pro model.

@@Great_America To be clear, I wasn't suggesting that either choice was bad. I was suggesting that there are tradeoffs, as Jerry pointed out, and that one fit me better than the other. @@HypraNT I've never once second guessed my choice, Demirkan. 95% of my use is at my desk where the larger 16-inch display works as an additional but not primary monitor. When I travel domestically by car or RV, it is no problem to take the laptop along plus an iPad Pro which I use as a second monitor. On a recent trip to India, which involved a bunch of flights and constant moving around, I left the laptop at home and carried an iPad Pro. The laptop definitely would have been a burden. That said, I wouldn't have taken a 14-inch either. (I've considered picking up a 13-inch MacBook Air to use specifically for air travel but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Very good and reasonable overall review. And I like your final purchase choice, too. The M1Max is strictly for super-power users. Ditto for the 16-inch. If a user plugs-into a high-quality external monitor for desktop docking and video editing or other heavy-duty workflows, the 14-inch should be more than enough machine. This is especially true for road warriors or at least people who want to carry their laptop to a variety of sitting locations (recliner, couch, conference rooms, etc.) and do not need a larger screen while away from the desk setup. But if the laptop display is most often going to be your primary display, or maybe you don't connect to an external monitor at all, the 16-inch is an extremely portable desktop computer replacement. AS FOR MAGSAFE: It depends on how you plan to use your machine. If you need the express-charging, MagSafe is the way to go. The unanswered question I have is how many aftermarket USB-C chargers are out there that can adequately power either of these laptops and still offer a super-portable form factor. If you're a road warrior and you want maximum charging and express charging, it's probably a good idea to buy more than one of Apple's extra-cost-option MagSafe power supplies and put one in your travel case and one in your home charging station.

Weight/bulk isn’t much of an issue because I mostly use my MBP around the house (and did so even pre-pandemic). For travel, it fits nicely in my Sutter Slim Backpack from Waterfield Designs and does not feel overly heavy in that backpack, certainly not heavy enough to convince me to go with the smaller screen size and lighter weight of the 14 inch. I toyed with a larger SSD but opted to do my video editing off a fast SSD (Samsung T7 or SanDisk Extreme both in 1 TB size), leaving my internal SSD free for other uses. So far this has worked well but I’m not doing especially sophisticated video editing, sonI’m not pushing the speed envelope. YMMV.

Using the machine all day, a larger screen is going to be better. However, if the size/weight is really too much then the decision is made. My business applications won’t really see a difference between the CPU’s but I know that faster extends the longevity. As everyone, cost will be a factor only if I buy it vs my company. In any case, the ROÍ of the laptop in any configuration is so great, the price justification is negligible. (I’m much stingier if I pay, however).

Great video Jerry! I went 16" Max 32/24/2TB. I have a 2019 16" and personally like the larger size since it rarely leaves the house. For a travel companion I take the 12.9 iPad Pro.

That is exactly where I am Jim, currently running on an XPS17 (the 13" M1 just is too small for my daily) and mine rarely leaves the house, I might sneak it into a backpack when I go stay overnight somewhere, but that is a rarity these days. I have long hummed and hawed I am not taking the Max because I do not need that kind of power, I need that kind of screen and a system that does not have the fans screaming.
@jimtipton88883 жыл бұрын
@@aelaan12 I struggled with the Pro vs Max decision. When I looked at it from where I was, with an upgrade to 32 GB of memory, it was only another $200 to get the Max. Maybe better resale down the road??Big picture viewed over multiple years I decided $200 wasn't that big a deal. Might branch into more video in the future so I'll have the system to support that and it should cut thru large RAW files like a hot knife thru butter! I'm with you, screaming fans are not good!

@araradrew resale value may be higher but maybe not. If there are very limited workflows that can actually take advantage of the features of Max then there may not be a resale market willing to pay it. Luke Miani has a good video from a couple months ago about resale value.

It's not the ram that's giving you a boost in performance, because as long as you've got enough of it - it's not going to benefit you, which doesn't apply to the other way around. The first thing that caught my eye when I compared the two models was the much beefier charger of the 16'. The 16' comes with a 140w watts charger while the 14' comes with either a 67w or a 96w. Apple must've raised the 16's power limit because it can handle the heat better due to it's larger chassis - or you can look at it the other way around and say you're getting a gimped version of the M1-max chip in the 14'.
@TonyBiancoOfficial3 жыл бұрын
I watched another video about the power usage on MaxTech I believe and it’s true, Apple does throttle the 14” by I think they reported about 20% because of the lack of heat distribution.
@jemenesk2 жыл бұрын
Ugh, I can't find anyone comparing these 2 but inversed spec'd. Everyone is doing a fully spec'd 14" to a base 16". The 14" throttles the Max, which is why is slower in some tests than the 16". But what can a fully spec'd 16" do when it is not being throttled compared to a base 14." Not criticizing your video man, it great! Good content, nicely structured, everythig well put and hinest. I am just bit frustrated that I can't find an inversed comparison, or a 16" base to 16" maxed one.

The Max is graphics power only, and the ability to power more than two external screens. Absolutely not necessary for development (unless you develop 3D models).

@AlecKinnear3 жыл бұрын
@@robpawlikowski4020 If it's still on order or just arrived you could swap it out for the base model, or the base model with the CPU upgrade (20% faster for multi-processor tasks which use the whole power of the computer, I believe X-Code does). What's interesting is that even the M1 MacBook Air is equally fast for single-core tasks. All the M1 Macs score 1750 for single processor tasks in Geekbench. But the M1 MacBook Air and the 13" M1 Pro only allow a single external monitor which is not enough (for me).

@@AlecKinnear The base one wont work for his use case. We need at least 32gb for development. I had to return the base 16 due it was slow down noticeably and went for 14 inch max 32 core 64 gb 2tb since it was in stock in the store.
@AlecKinnear2 жыл бұрын
@@tonyhuynh6789 For development, I can easily believe you need 32GB. 16GB was inadequate for mixed development and multimedia work for me. The Max graphics upgrade would only be necessary for development in the case a developer needs more than two external monitors plus the built-in monitor. Development would be fine on the base 14" but one would need to find one with 32GB of RAM. Relatively speaking, even the Max version is a lot of computer for the money and unheard of performance in a portable computer.

I have another laptop provided for me by the employer and I cannot use it for my personal use. The same problem with personal laptop, I cannot use it for work. I was thinking about portability but let’s be honest I won’t be traveling with this MacBook. Also, my current machine is thinkpad t440p and I have chosen it because of portability. And now it is just overheating because of its size! So it is nice to have a bit of headroom in thermals. At the moment 14 inch doesn’t seem to be overheating but it uses air cooling more than 16 inch. Imagine what happens in 2-3 years when dust gets inside. @Ian-gf8id3 жыл бұрын
I've watched a few videos that make the same point as you do regarding performance. Published specs (more CPU; more RAM) and bench tests are not backed up by performance which is orders of magnitude better. Not everyone needs processing power only for creative purposes (4/8k video; 3D; etc) - we need to process large amounts of data and formulae, and these new MBPs do not seem to substantially raise the bar in that respect. Disappointing, and my wallet will be staying shut until Apple and software developers (i.e. Microsoft) sort these processing bottlenecks.

I have a M1 MBA which I really only need for Office, Web, light video editing, etc. I'm very disinclined to upgrade due to the extra weight, cost and power (I don't really need). If YOUR workload was NOT professional and you were using it for these purposes - which would you choose, 13" MBP, 13" MBA, 14" or 16" MBP? Keep up great work. I hope you'll do a comparison between the m1s and the new MBPs. Happy Thanksgiving in advance.
@affieuk3 жыл бұрын
I think you've answered your own question, the 13" MBA seems like the right choice for you. 13" MBP is certainly not worth it. I would recommend two things, get 16gb RAM and consider if you want a bigger screen size, that's the only thing that might push you to 14" or 16" MBP's.
