I am actually in pretty much the same mindset as you with the Volt except for a couple things. I love my Volt but I hate using gas, I hate going on the hwy to a buddies place and using all my electric range and then having to use gas or find a charging station, which are few are far between. Unlike you I will be sticking with the Volt, I can not afford to upgrade to a Tesla and the places I road trip to the most don't have any fast chargers along the way (yet). Once you get used to it and understand what you want and maybe have the infrastructure (like solar and charging) move onto a pure EV. Also, the Volts are known to be reliable especially Gen1s like my own, they are gems that no one really understood but by their owners :)

I had pretty much the same experience: started with the Volt (a great car) then moved to a fully electric Tesla Model S (a greater car!). Never looked back. BTW, you didn’t mention it, but you also just bought the safest car in existence - even safer than my Model S. Me too
@genephipps64215 жыл бұрын
I am not sure I would call it "in detail" but he did a good job as an overview. I will add a few small details--by no means an extensive list. When you enter a destination into the navigation the cars ability to estimate range (think accuracy) gets even better because Tesla uses GPS terrain topography--like hills--and road types--think highways or surface streets, weather--think hot weather vs cold weather, traffic, etc. along your specific route to very accurately predict how much range you will have at any given point along your trip. Third party data collected by Tesla owners, (not Tesla the company) over several years shows that the range estimation at the end of a trip (be it local or long distance) is usually within +/- 1% which is not only far better than any other EV on the market but is actually better than any ICE car. When you use the trip planner in your Tesla it not only shows you where you can charge along the way, but it shows how many charging stations are at each location, how many are currently in use, and how long they will be busy. It even calculates calculates in other cars that currently have a trip in route that will be using that location. In a way Tesla can "load balance" use of the charger network--to some extent--so drivers are less likely to spend time waiting. It isn't anywhere near 100% of course because there are lots of other variables like people not using a planned trip stopping at that location "unexpectedly" or others leaving a car plugged in longer than needed while they get a bite to eat, etc., but it does make a noticeable difference. Another advantage when you set a location into the navigation is that the car can then precondition the battery so that it is at the optimal temperature for charging when you arrive at the charger. IOW it will be at the perfect temperature for rapid charging--this can make a *big* difference in charging speed.

Even a used Tesla would easily cost two or three times as much. The metro area where I live is only about 15 miles wide, so I can easily handle my daily commute and errands in full electric mode. I only ever burn gas when I'm going on a road trip, and even then it gets about 38 mpg on the highway, which is pretty good for a 3700-pound vehicle. Would I _prefer_ to have a Tesla? You betcha! It's cheaper than buying any new ICE car that cost more than about 15k for cost of ownership for 5 years. Admittedly, this doesn't count insurance, taxes, delivery (destination) charge, and yearly plates. But you'll owe that on any new car.

Austin Turner I understand completely. I live in rural Wisconsin, up until two weeks ago the were no Public L2 chargers within 60 miles of me. There are full EV’s and then there are Tesla’s . Huge difference. The 310 mile range of my Model 3 makes driving pretty easy. When I leave my house in the morning I’m always topped up with at least 279 mi range. I can go just about anywhere and not think about charging. If I did need to charge I simply adjust my route to intercept a supercharger somewhere close to my travel direction. A Leaf or other short range EV would never work for my needs. We love our Volt, I wish it was a Gen 2, but the Model 3 is my go too travel car now. I recently did a 3800 mile round trip to AZ during spring break. It was a blast. Minor pre planning had me choose a hotel with destination chargers on one leg half way across Kansas. The distance between Supercharging was 425 miles because I didn’t want to drive an extra 125 miles out of the way by taking the interstate routes. The hotel was the halfway point. So I left the hotel with a full charge in the morning. Otherwise it was just using the Supercharging network.

I think you found out why GM produces the Volt: to convince people that battery technology is something for the distant future, not something that's ready now. It's a shame they had you convinced for so long, but good that you figured out the truth.

You mentioned that having a car that can provide you with a full charge every day is "outstanding". This l believe is understated immensely. It would be like driving your ice car everyday and waking up to a full tank of fuel...... Lets ask the oil industry if this idea will take off for the masses lol

Having the 60 or so miles of range with the Volt was great.. but now I can have about 300 miles of range with the Tesla every day I wake up is kinda insane! And yes it is wayyyy understated.

When I saw your first video about the Chevy Volt I honestly thought you were crazy. Now, you’ve somewhat redeemed yourself. I bought a model 3 three weeks ago and it is literally the best car I’ve ever driven. I used to drive a BMW 328i and my wife has a Mercedes GLC - the Tesla is just a different experience altogether. As others have said already, welcome to the Tesla family!

Thank you. I do see the Volt as simply a way to boost my confidence with a full EV. As much as I do hate myself for buying a Volt and losing so much in depreciation, it was still a good experience, and I don't regret it. If anything it just gave me the ability to recommend the Tesla that much easier.
@paulgracey46975 жыл бұрын
Self-induced "range anxiety" is a myth since EV's with 200 miles per charge came to be on sale. That is why Chevy is no longer building the Volt, but still is selling its Bolt, a fully electric car, in those states where pollution is a major problem, mostly. I have been a part of an EV club( EVAOSC ) since way before the GM EV-1 was developed, and then was killed by the same company that sold you and others the Volt based on that myth. Members of that club, founded by people at Cal Tech who could not wait for the major manufacturers to bring EV's to market and began doing conversions themselves, did have real range anxiety two to three decades ago. When I first began attending meetings, club members were very proud if they had managed to eke out 60 miles getting to the meeting with 1000 lbs or more of lead-acid batteries. They would have to go less than 45 mph on the older secondary highways, not using the nearby Interstates. The last few dozen miles of Route 66 is celebrated history near where we met in those days.

I was exactly where you were in 2016: considering the Volt, because I was afraid of fully going electric with range anxiety. At that time there was no good 200 mile range choice for under $60K (model S). The 400 mile gas backup seemed like a really good idea back then. But it was really interesting to hear that you cringed every time you went on the highway and the gas motor kicked in. I can totally picture myself doing the same thing! In my case I was able to wait until 2018, and Model 3 was the exact car I wanted (and best I've ever owned!) Glad that you figured out what you really wanted. It doesn't always happen in a straight line from A to B.

I've been a Volt driver (now with the '19) for years and love using my iPhone with CarPlay and typically listen to XM radio. Neither of these are available in the Tesla Model 3. Honestly, fear of missing CarPlay integration and XM has me more concerned than anything else. Did you use either in your prior cars and if so, how is the transition to the built-in maps, online streaming music, and phone via Bluetooth instead? Also, hear anything about updates for a rear-view camera mirror or a 360 degree view when parking?

Hope you didn’t buy the Volt new like I did. You probably lost a boat load of money selling or trading it off. Volt has a much higher of depreciation than normal. Myself- bought a new 2012 Volt $40K minus $10K for trade. Now on KBB it’s worth $7K I’m hanging onto mine I paid to much. Ouch! I do like your Model 3!
@jeremyjudkins5 жыл бұрын
I did exactly that. It does depreciate a ton! I think they factor in the 7500 tax credit into the depreciation. My Volt was extremely upside down when I traded it in, but I came up with the money before I bought the Tesla. I didn't want to roll any negative equity into a new loan.

Great points about how the updates keep the car feeling new, and also how any other dealer would be happy to sell you an entire new car just for some of the features Tesla gets over the air. For free. One thing you were wrong about though: Even without the over the air updates... trust me, although you will get used to the features and advantages, over time you will hardly ever not be amazed. Kudos for your open mindedness and your willingness to share the decision making process. You are actually doing more for the electric revolution than people who were full BEV owners from the start. We had a similar experience with a Volt. It wasn't exactly a bad car, but it turned out to be, not the best of two worlds --but the worst. Expensive service for an engine you almost never use: a heavy, poorly performing and stinky gas engine combined with a compromised electric design because the gas engine is takes up weight and cost that could be used for a better electric drivetrain. Hybrids will quickly disappear as more manufacturers add BEV's to their lineup. I was never so glad to get rid of a car in my life as I was when we traded the Volt for our Tesla. FWIW the Tesla is three years old and it hasn't lost its WOW factor. Having free upgrades is part of the reason, but it's just a great car. The only maintenance in three years has been rotating the tires. Enjoy your new Model 3!

Oops! Learned something tonight... I knew Volt would charge 40% if in Park and select Mountain Mode while idling. Well, I had 6 miles charged when I shift into gear. Result the battery continued to charge to 40% allowing the Battery, Engine Combination operation in Mountain Mode. No need to find the charger.😅

400 for 6 months?!? I really need to get out of this state...I was quoted $750 PER MONTH...after all of the incentives (high college GPA, full time working, no accidents, etc.) they walked it down to $500/month. Even putting it under my dad's policy, I still pay $1000 every 6 months on a Kia that only cost $20,000 brand new 6 years ago. Michigan sucks. It's crazy to think how much more we pay than everyone else.

I own a volt because I can't afford any Tesla. What I like about the volt is that if I did a lot of millage I don't need to wait 30 min on a supercharger to get back and in some city sometime there's a lineup and need to wait to get a charger. As for a Tesla, pray not to have any accident with this car, it will cost you double to repair it and lot of people complain about the after services. With the reliability of electric cars, the bank should offer a 10-year loan to have the same monthly payment of a standard car. since the car will surely be able to last more than 12 years and keep it value. I think the price of the car breaks a lot of potential buyers. For a Tesla to be profitable you have to travel 25-30k miles per year. The useless expensive gadget on a Tesla is the autopilot. It's pretty cool but pretty useless if you need to keep the hand on the stering and the system is not 100% sure, there a lot of accident because of the autopilot and it's not work in cold weather and do not work in most city. Fortunately there will be other automakers who will take the electric turn in the years to come, which will certainly lower the price.

I am glad you stay objective and admit that your pe-conceptions may have been wrong, I loved the Volt was going to get one since i could not afford a Model 3 but luckily around the time i got my new car i heard the Volt was being phased out by Chevy which means its going to get harder and harder to source parts in the future

Thanks for this video. I have a 2014 Volt with only 14000 miles and almost all of that electric. (I don't drive it much.) I LOVE it. I did a lot of research to get the perfect one I wanted. But I was just in an accident, not my fault, and am currently waiting to see if the Volt is totaled or not. :( I won't go back to a gas car. Since Volts are not made anymore I don't know what I'm going to do. The Bolt is too small. I didn't expect to consider a Tesla because I thought it would be too expensive, but maybe a Model 3 isn't out of reach. Range anxiety doesn't bother me quite as much as it did in 2014.

When the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik satellite in 1957 the American government officials would say something to the public like "So they put a little ball into space. We'll build a better one" When they were in the back room talking to each other they were kind of scared knowing that with just a little more payload they can send a nuclear warhead up there and get it anywhere fast. Do we have a similar story being played out with electric cars? The big traditional auto makers will tell the public that it is no big secret how to build a good electric car. But what are they saying to each other among themselves? It must be hard for GM to launch the Chevy Bolt, not a bad car at that, and then look at the sales numbers.
