Regarding challenges: I attended Ohio State University and the OSUMB fields a band of 192 at half time, but there are actually 235 total band members. Band members challenge weekly for their spot at half time. Those that do not earn a spot on the field at half time are "alternates" for the week, still expected to learn the show and rehearse with their section and squad in case of an injury or illness creating a spot that needs to be filled. But at half time the alternates are assigned various tasks such as holding director ladders, (1-2 band members per ladder to set up at half time and stabilize during the show), moving equipment, collecting any dropped equipment during the show, and any number of other tasks that are actually quite important to keeping the shows running smoothly. But to keep everyone at the top of their game, all band members regardless of seniority must try out at the beginning of every season and then challenge every week for their spot on the field at half time.

Honestly, having done both styles at some point or another, I'd argue it's less about the historical demographics of the line and more about what the line is trying to do. Corps style is about pleasing judges through strong discipline and uniform technique, and show style (or, as I've taken to referring to it, collegiate style) is about pleasing the crowd by being super flashy. At the end of the day, though, they're still largely the same activity, and the objective is still to lay down clean beats for the enjoyment of others
@TReeseTV4 жыл бұрын
Its all good Eric. I was in a corps style band in high school in Southeast Louisiana. Alot of other bands were show style, and we used to make fun of them all the time for being over the top or sloppy or over hyped. I really never learned to appreciate it until my senior year when I got to talk to other drum captains on why they enjoy that style. I still would rather play in a corps style band though.
@Phin_Again4 жыл бұрын
I mean, its kinda hard to not run into any of the show style bands considering how much of a big deal they are down there. My dad actually marched with Edna Karr in the early 90s so he always tells me how much of a big deal it is in New Orleans. But, they do need to be clean and many of them are, while some need work. (I would know since I remember watching one of the parades this year at Mardi Gras and there were some high schools who need some cleaning up).
@sambecker21554 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, in New Orleans there are some big show style bands. For parades they play and often do a lot of really cool visual stuff. Marching in a Mardi Gras parade isn’t like anything else. And while they’re not the cleanest, god damn they’re entertaining, and god knows the drunk parade watchers don’t know the difference. I’m not in a show style band but I really do appreciate it. It takes a lot to play and dance while marching five miles. Look up some videos if you want to know what I’m talking about. There are a ton of videos of marching bands in Mardi Gras parades.

If anything check out Beyonce's Coachella performance. She even said as much, bringing the excitement and fun of the HBCU 5th quarter as her concert. Hell even in her opening number the band is playing a number that I often hear FAMU play in the stands. Not to mention she had the band play after the percussion break, "Hay" by Crucial conflict, and Hay battles are a big part of the HBCU experience. Okay, so show style is as you said is synonymous with HBCUs. Many people have complaints about how the horns sound like crap drums not playing cleanly and to that I say yes, there are some bands out there for lack of better words, really should check how they play, but at the same time there are MANY MANY more bands that play cleanly and sound perfect. Which brings me to the overall sound. You have to understand that the bands are playing popular R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop music, meaning if you hear it on the radio, there is a good chance you will be able to recognize the tune and go dance in the stands. Add different dance moves and it's a style that is quite difficult to master.

I remember in my hometown there was one other school. Smaller than ours. Always beat us at football though. Hometown rival type of thing. They were a show style band. They had their sheet music attached to their instruments, jumped around like weirdos, and were tiny. Like the entire band was maybe 50 people. Ours on the other hand we were clean. Uniform. Precise. Loud. Aim for absolute perfection. If we even thought to bring sheet music we would run for miles the next practice. Our snare line had as many people as their entire drum line. Like to the point where it was like an adult picking on a little kid. No comparison between us. But those guys were having just as much if not even more fun when they came out onto the field and took up all 20 yards lol those guys could fucking party. It'd be cool to hang for a bit after the game and talk to them about our play styles and we'd jam for a bit... I will admit I enjoyed the feeling of awe whenever we marched out onto the field as the were coming off and just fucking demolishing them with our bigger band lol at the end of the day we are all just drumline assholes wanting to make loud noises with friends.

As someone who has been indulged for multiple years in both HBCU and Drum Corps cultures I can easily say that I understand both arguments. But I have to be fair when I make these points. Yes, I agree that Eric should definitely take the time to visit some HBCUs to understand their motifs behind what they do and why they value it. Yes he needs to understand that it is a distinct culture from what drum corps are familiar with. But what some HBCUS need to understand is that culture is within the type of music you play, the way you march, the uniforms, etc. Everything that Eric is pointing is simply from what logically isn’t making sense as a musician. Across all styles, whether it be Corp, Show, Military, or even pipe band, there’s no reason why any Drumline should be playing out of time, uneducated in reading music, have bad technique, no sound quality, or not blending. Those things listed are not correlated with culture, and that’s what most of these schools fail to realize. I love HBCUS, they are far more entertaining than most drum corps (simply because they prioritize entertaining all crowds, not just those who are educated in the arts, which I believe drum corps lack in and why it isnt as popular as it should be) but we shouldn’t allow entertainment to come before education, and the drive to become a master of the craft.

In my experience growing up in the Deep South, a lot of core style bands would shit on show style band and I always thought that was really lame. My band was small, under funded, and disorganized, but still everyone would hate on the loud, proud, and talented show style bands. Looking back on it, I think it was a lot of unintentional racism. Not saying that you did this at all! Just saying that I think it’s common and also lame.

Same. When i marched in highschool we thought that that style was sloppy and too showy. Whenever we played against Atlanta bands at games we called them "ghetto" but i was secretly jealous because they were way more entertaining lol. Now that im older i kinda wish i experienced marching in that style 😅

@@SkyCloudSilence some stuff is though. You don’t know what was going on, he does so he/she could be right. We don’t know.
@SonOfTheLion3 жыл бұрын
@@Sergio-fu7mv No no it wasn't. Its obvious that saying show style is more "entertaining" means less skilled. Style doesn't make up for sloppy technique. What is more shocking to me is that apparently we are supposed to pretend that lower standards should be acceptable for these bands. Since the distinction is made in the video, I'll use it. Why not expect the HBCs to play up to the same standards as the PWIs? From someone unfamiliar to the scene it seems to me like you are saying the blacks can't play as good as the whites but they are entertaining so that is good enough. If anything sounds like racism, that does. I'd expect any drummer in a band I was in to play well, first.

Gpa for band scholarships lol nah bro. Gpa only matters to get in the school. For band scholarships for almost all hbcus it’s an audition process usually a prepared snare piece, rudiments, scales, sight read. Kind of the same as auditioning for a spot in dci.

One more thing you got wrong was seniors playing at their own graduation. In my school in the middle of the graduation program all the Sr band members go up from their seats and played a feature piece in their cap and gown. Ours was a piece based on the score from How the West Was Won.

Heya, bud! Nice to see another UD guy. :) I was UD snare captain in *cough*1994*cough*. I was actually offered a scholarship to Delaware State University for marching band back in the day... I forget how much it was, but it would have covered a few classes at the very least. I wound up doing UD instead. :)

Um. One small thing. You said that some of the show-style lines do play cleanly. And you're right. That's so much easier when the heads are tuned that loose.... like at 2:23. If I didn't see them on a video I'd think it was a line of concert snares.

I was challenged in middle school for second spot on tenors we only had drum line. I lost but to my defense I don’t know how to read music and I never practiced or tried to learn beyond what we were taught. I did it for extracurricular activities. After middle school I went a core band school that did not play anything good... so I never joined the band. I definitely love show bands

Theres a TV show you should check out that is a docudrama (kinda) showing all of the internal stuff behind the actual college marching band behind the a marching movie (don't remember which one) movie including showing all aspects of the auditions and playing, practice for all parts of the band, dancers, flag, and all. It's about a show style band and it's frankly dope. (It is a marching band show, not just drumline, but it should be checked out.) Its called marching orders

As a H.B.C.U. ALUMNI, I certainly appreciate your mature stance to correct your position on the movie DRUMLINE. I think what you have done here is a BLUE PRINT to even heal race relations in our nation, as much of racism has to do with ignorance rather than pure hatred, which we have experienced the pure hatred kind as well. I'd be interested in taking you on a tour of some of the HBCU's MARCHING BANDS, once this Coronavirus thing subsides, so you can get a thorough immersion into our world and actually witness the level of commitment and dedication we have to the DRUMLINE and BAND. And believe me, most of our DRUMLINES are super clean, and can play with anyone in the world. I'll post some schools here for you to research and if you want to go to the schools, I'd be honored to accompany you. Thanks again for being a MAN!! BEST HBCU BANDS: Southern University, Jackson State University, Alabama A&M, Mary Bethune Cookman University, Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, Morris Brown University, and Prairie View A&M, just to name a few!! HBCU Bands in Drumline the movie the first one!! Not the second one! The first one! Main two bands featured (Atlanta A&T) Not a Real College! Morris Brown College!!! The real deal! Gramblin State University Marching Band, Clark Atlanta University, BCU Bethune Cookman University!! The Atlanta A&T members were audition from all over from different HBCU Bands for the movie. Atlanta A&T uniforms came from one of the High School bands you showed which is Southwest Dekalb High School from Atlanta, GA it’s the ones with the Yellow and Blue uniforms. But there is different styles all together. What people don’t know is sure DCI is great but HBCU Bands break things down. And yes they can play at the same quality as DCI. NC A&T and Norfolk State are prime example. Now it brakes it down even more bands such as NC A&T and Norfolk State are what we call in HBCU band world as MEAC Bands! PV Prairie view A&M, Southern University, JACKSON State University, Florida A&M, Alcorn State, Miles College all those colleges are known as SWAC Bands! Top HBCU Rank bands here in the South is SWAC Bands such as Southern University The Human Jukebox Marching Band, Jackson State University The Sonic Boom Of The South, Prairie View Marching Storm. Look Up the BoomBox Classic SU Vs. JSU! It’s something different! Keep in mind it’s a different style from what your use too! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ambclKKwl9-nbrc First Quarter Battle SU Vs JSU BoomBox Classic! And also a video from the Battle of the Bands I went to here in Houston, TX National Battle Of The Bands kzbin.info/www/bejne/maPTq6atoM-cq9U and this from the Honda BOTB back in 2015 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKGtnoOVorhgask and PV playing Murder on my Mind kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpOtY3eNrpimas0 you will have to skip to 4 min Mark on the link above to see it. Last link Jackson State Marching in at the Soul Bowl in 2014 now you can see the reason for the T-Drums in the video link kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHjFiHp6fN6ai8k One thing you will notice is that HBCU Drumlines Break Down the same rudiments at a lower tempo which is old school, to where you can fully understand it versus crazy lick after crazy lick! Big difference from DCI where you are playing it at 160-190. Now as far as the Tom! Yes the guy is play it correctly and playing it really good it’s like I said broken down at a lower tempo! And that’s on a show style level! Now in HBCU world you are challenging for your spot and that happens all the time. You have to be on top of your game to perform at the best of your ability. JACKSON State’s War and Thunder Drumline is a Prime Example as well. Just have to see it for yourself. Best advice go to a Honda BOTB’s and compare it to what it is with DCI. You will love it more than DCI. Sure DCI is great but after a while it gets boring.
